Science/TechnologySamsung And Lenovo Are The Latest To Ditch A Physical Mobile World Congress by kenreysnot(op): 11:04pm On May 14, 2021
Samsung and Lenovo representatives won’t show up in person to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this year, according to statements obtained by Reuters and The Verge, respectively.

Samsung says it has “made the decision to withdraw from exhibiting in-person” and will instead attend remotely to prioritize the health and safety of its customers and employees. A Lenovo spokesperson told The Verge that the company will attend virtually instead of in person and that it informed the GSM Association, which organizes the event, about its plans on Friday. Neither company has announced what its remote presence will look like.

The in-person event is still scheduled to happen in June, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and difficulties with vaccination availability outside the US. The GSMA also fought against shutting down last year’s event early on in 2020 before several big brands dropped out. This year, we’ve already seen Google announce that it won’t be exhibiting, in addition to Samsung and Lenovo’s remote announcements.

Other notable companies have dropped out from the in-person conference as well, including Nokia, Ericsson, Sony and Oracle.

Science/TechnologyUS Backtracks On Xiaomi Blacklisting by kenreysnot(op): 10:57pm On May 14, 2021
The US has agreed not to put Xiaomi on a blacklist blocking investment in the Chinese tech company, undoing a move made in the last week of the Trump administration. Xiaomi sued the US government over the designation, but just filed a joint status report with the Department of Defense saying the two parties “have agreed upon a path forward that would resolve this litigation without the need for contested briefing.”

The DoD had decided to designate Xiaomi as a “Chinese Communist Military Company,” which could have forced any American investors to divest their holdings in Xiaomi by November this year. After Xiaomi sued the government in response, a district judge issued a preliminary injunction to block the blacklisting, calling it “arbitrary and capricious.”

The US didn’t appeal the preliminary injunction against it. Xiaomi told The Verge in January that the company “is not owned, controlled or affiliated with the Chinese military, and is not a ‘Communist Chinese Military Company.’”

Now it looks like the matter will be settled on better terms. Xiaomi and the DoD have “agreed that a final order vacating the January 14, 2021 designation of Xiaomi Corporation as a CCMC … would be appropriate,” according to the court filing. The two parties now plan to negotiate on an order vacating agency action, with a joint proposal expected before May 20th.

WebmastersDebconf20 Debian Developer Conference Will Take Place Online by kenreysnot(op): 8:29pm On Jun 27, 2020
This year’s edition of DebConf, the Debian Project developer conference, will only take place online due to the global health issue, the organization announced this weekend.

Just like before, the DebConf20 will take place between August 23 and August 29, however, the team expects the event itself to be shorter than before, albeit they explain that everything depends on the proposals that it receives until the kickoff date.

This year’s edition of the conference was scheduled to take place in Haifa, so now the entire schedule is pushed back for one year. In other words, while the 2020 edition will happen online, the 2021 venue will take place in Haifa, followed by Kosovo in 2022 and Kochi, India in 2023.

“The DebConf team has had to take the hard decision that DebConf 20 cannot happen in-person, in Haifa, in August, as originally planned. This decision is based on the status of the venue in Haifa, the local team's view of the local health situation, the existing travel restrictions and the results of a survey of potential participants,” the official announcement reads.
Same agenda

Of course, a decision on the 2021 venue is yet to be made, but the if the global health crisis is resolved, then the event will be held with the typical physical audience just like before.

As for the 2020 edition, the DebConf team says nothing changes for the agenda and attendees can still get in touch with other developers to discuss, only that everything happens online.

“The Debian community can still get together to share ideas, discuss plans in Birds of a Feather sessions, and eat cheese, from the safety of the desks at home,” the team explains.

Several other tech companies have moved their events online due to the same issue, including here Google, Microsoft, Apple, and others, all planning to return to physical events beginning with the 2021 schedule.
WebmastersLatest Windows 10 Cumulative Updates Could Break Down Microsoft Outlook by kenreysnot(op): 12:06pm On Jun 27, 2020
If you’re no longer able to launch Microsoft Outlook starting a few days ago, then you’re really not alone. As it turns out, one of the recent updates shipped by Microsoft is causing more headaches for Outlook users, generating an error that is pretty difficult to get rid of.

More specifically, if you update to version 2005 build 12827.20268 in Outlook and then try to launch the app, you could end up getting the following error:

"Something is wrong with one of your data files and Outlook needs to close. Outlook might be able to fix your file. Click OK to run the Inbox Repair Tool."

Needless to say, if you click OK to launch the Inbox Repair Tool, you end up getting the same error, so technically, you’re stuck in an infinite loop that doesn’t let you launch the email app.
Workaround available

So what’s causing the problem? Microsoft isn’t sure, as explained in this tech support document.

“An initial client fix is available in Insider Beta version 13004.10000. The Outlook Team is investigating this issue with the Windows Team. We are not sure yet if the primary fix will come from Outlook or Windows. When we have more information on fix details we will add them here,” the company says.

Woody Leonhard of CW says the latest cumulative updates are to blame and adds that the PST file is fine, with no damage whatsoever.

Microsoft has also published a workaround on the page linked above, and the company recommends users to configure Outlook to ignore the check for the PST file when launching the app. It’s all possible with a registry edit, although it goes without saying this isn’t necessarily the most convenient thing to do for everyone.

As to when a fix could land for all users, this is something that nobody knows for sure when it’s supposed to happen.
