Webmasters / How Cyber Criminals Are Conning You by KenyanBlogger(m): 11:22am On Apr 25, 2020
Criminals are taking advantage of the fear created by the coronavirus and social distancing rules to defraud Kenyans through cybercrime.

With most people opting to shop or transact online, companies and law enforcement authorities are reporting an upsurge in online scams.

Economic crimes and internet-related fraud have surged across the world since Covid-19 was declared a global health pandemic last month.

Kenya, whose cybercrime and fraud rates are ordinarily way above global and continental averages, according to various statistics, has caught on the criminal wave.

One of the most common ways identified by the Saturday Nation through which Kenyans are scammed is through “phishing”.

Phishing is a form of cybercrime where targets are contacted by email or text messages by scammers posing as legitimate institutions.

The targets are then lured to provide sensitive information, such as their passwords, banking and credit card details.

Such information may be obtained by asking targets to fill in some forms thinking they are performing legitimate transactions, or unknowingly logging in to websites.

'FREE' INTERNET

The malicious websites, if clicked on through hyperlinks, enable the scammers to access computer or mobile phones and steal sensitive information, including money from bank accounts or, in the case of Kenya, mobile money.

Mobile telephony giant Safaricom has in the past few days been trying to clarify to its subscribers that it is not offering any cash relief to help Kenyans cope with the effects of coronavirus.

This is after subscribers reported receiving text messages relaying the fraudulent information.

“Safaricom PLC will be giving out Sh2,500 to all its users during this corona pandemic to help people while staying at home. Claim your share now,” says one of the fraudulent test messages seen by the Saturday Nation.

Attached to the message is a hyperlink to a website that has since been pulled down.

“We are not carrying out any such activity, and always avoid engaging such strange sites that could be used to access your account and defraud you,” reads one response from Safaricom to a subscriber who had almost been conned.

STATE SERVICES

Cybercriminals are also targeting Kenyans through a website that claims the government will offer them free internet data if they click on it.

“All Kenyan citizens are entitled to free 200GB of data to stay at home to counter Covid-19,” says the fraudulent post by the phishing website that is currently doing the rounds on Facebook.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), too, has been forced to clarify to motorists after a malicious page appeared on Facebook called “Smart DL” that has been telling people it is issuing smart driving licences.

NTSA on March 16 suspended most of its services, including the issuing of driving licences. Several government departments have also stopped or minimised the range of services they are offering until the coronavirus is under control.

Cybercriminals like the ones behind the “Smart DL” scam have taken advantage of Kenyans desperate to get government services in order to con them.

“We request members of the public not to transact through that page,” says NTSA on the “Smart DL” scam.

Apart from phishing, cybercriminals are trying conning Kenyans by pretending to offer services or goods online in order to get money out of them.

STAY VIGILANT

One such scam identified by the Saturday Nation calls itself “Inua Wananchi Sacco”, which claims it can offer those who register with it for Sh1,000 a payment of Sh800 weekly for the next eight weeks.

Its Facebook page and website were pulled down after we started making inquiries.

It is also believed that several people or organisations claiming to be selling items related to preventing Covid-19, like face masks, hand sanitisers and gloves, could be con men. They usually ask for payment upfront but fail to deliver.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has warned Kenyans to be vigilant. “Members of the public are warned that criminals are using the Covid-19 pandemic to scam them through circulation of phishing emails purporting to sell non-existent items, and messages that are accompanied by links that purport to offer free goodies like data bundles, money and airtime, among other things,” said the DCI.

“Messages accompanying such links are enticingly packaged with captivating words meant to prompt potential but unsuspecting victims to click onto them with a promise of getting something declared therein,” said the DCI.
Romance / After He Died Of Coronavirus, She Opened Up His Phone And Found His Last Words by KenyanBlogger(m): 3:33pm On Apr 24, 2020
When Katie Coelho, 33, rushed to the hospital in Danbury, Connecticut, on Wednesday just before 3 a.m., it was too late.

Her husband, Jon, who had spent the past month there being treated for the coronavirus, had just died of cardiac arrest brought on by the disease.

He was just 32 years old.

Distraught and bereft, she gathered her late husband’s belongings and opened his phone, wanting to save as many pictures of him and their two children as she could.

But what she found when she turned it on stopped her in her tracks.

He’d left her a note.

“I love you guys with all my heart and you’ve given me the best life I could have ever asked for,” Jon had written. “I am so lucky it makes me so proud to be your husband and the father to Braedyn and Penny.”

“Katie you are the most beautiful caring nurturing person I’ve ever met,” the note continued. “You are truly one of a kind...make sure you live life with happiness and that same passion that made me fall in love with you. Seeing you be the best mom to the kids is the greatest thing I’ve ever experienced.”

Katie was stunned to find the note, which she believes Jon must have written weeks earlier before he was first intubated, she told BuzzFeed News on the day of his death.

“Even though he was fighting for his life for the past month, I know up until the last second he wanted to make sure the kids and I were okay,” she said. “He knew he had to say something to me because I haven’t been able to speak to him in so long.”

Jon and Katie met as college students at Western Connecticut State University. They started out as close friends, then became boyfriend and girlfriend, and finally, in 2013, became husband and wife. Together, they had two children: Braedyn, 2 and a half, and Penelope, 10 months.

Celebrities / Revealed- Cause Of Death Of Pastor John Apewejoye( Singer Ruth Matete's Husband) by KenyanBlogger(m): 6:25am On Apr 24, 2020
An autopsy report has eventually established the real cause of the death of pastor John Apewejoye, singer Ruth Matete’s late husband.

Government pathologist Johansen Oduor has stated ‘Beloved John’ as fondly known died of multiple organ failure.

The pastor died on April 12 while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital over a purported gas explosion.

Before being referred to KNH, Beloved John had been admitted to Bellevue hospital where he was said to have suffered 40 percent of burns, an assertion that medics at KNH negated.

Ruth Matete, however, faulted Bellevue for its practitioners’ negligence that led to his husband’s demise. She filed a complaint against Bellevue through her lawyer Robert Odaga.

Back in Nigeria, the pastor’s manager suspected Ruth had a hand in the death of her husband given how dramatic and chaotic their union had been.

The manager said Ruth had on many occasions been violent to John and there exist chances that she stabbed him in what might have been their routine scuffle.

Detectives have grilled the gospel singer twice regarding the murder.

Celebrities / List Of Top 10 Most Influential Africans by KenyanBlogger(m): 9:18pm On Apr 22, 2020
Africa has, in recent times, become one of the continents to reckon with in all aspects or fields of human endeavors.

On the lead, it is definitely Nigeria, who has produced different talents representing it well in diaspora and in the country.

According to theafricareport.com, there is a created list of top 100 influential Africans of which my focus in this article is just 10.

The 10 most influential Africans list cut across Nigeria, South Africa, Cote d'Ivoire and Ethiopia.

Please permit me to make the list exhaustive and detailing what each of these ten Africans did and how they have made impact in their own way. There is a particular order of influence. Of course, you came here to read about the position of Davido in the list. What I say now is, stay tuned and relaxed. We are almost there!

And this is the list of 10 influential Africans according to their order of influence:

1. Aliko Dangote

Yes, he has maintained that record of being the richest man in Africa for quite some years now. Though the global economic trends has affected him one way or the other, his wealth still remains stable.

Dangote is reputable for diversity. He is into many things. The latest of which is an ambitious $10.5 billion oil refinery, which after completion, will be Africa's largest. Now that is truly amazing.

2. Elon Musk

South Africa is the origin of this renown man. He made his name in software at first, before going into many other things he is known for today.

I am very sure many of you may think he is an American. No he is not. He is actually a migrant.

With his ideas, he is giving the world something to think about. If you know Tesla motors, or if you are aware of SpaceX, then they are all pointing to one man, Elon Musk. He is a man of impact no doubt.

3. Koo's Bekker

Also from South Africa too and known to have a rapidly growing shares in a company. He could have been paid salary in the company, but he instead chose stock options. The wisdom made him have leverage at Naspers. Now Naspers owns 31% of Tencent, a Chinese company.

4. Chimamanda Adichie

A Nigerian. Some of you may be surprised she is on the list at number 4, but I tell you, she worked for it.

She has engaged audiences with her impressive writings which borders on many topics as racism, sexism and even the human condition. If you know the book, "Purple Hibiscus", then you can be familiar with what I am saying here.

5. Mic Wrecker

This man is also from South Africa. He never stop challenging the views of the world, especially as can be seen when critiquing the presidency of Donald Trump. He was in a way, responsible for teaching some Americans that Africa is not a country.

6. Tidjane Thiam

You can call this individual the master strategist. These Ivorian CEO was responsible for the turnaround of Credit Suisse, this he started from 2016.

7. Davido

This is the one you have been waiting for.

If it is riches, he has it. He was born to a rich family and has leveraged on that so well to make his impact in the world of music and to some extent, politics.

In 2019 election, he used his influence for the PDP's presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Davido extend his influence beyond Africa by selling out O2 Arena in London, with many people pushing to see him perform on stage. It is only a man of influence that can do that.

8. Enoch Adeboye

A Nigerian pastor. He is known to be the leader of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. Aside that, he is also seen by many as the spiritual father of Nigeria's Vice president, the person of VP Yemi Osinbanjo.

9. Kumi Naidoo

You can call him a crime fighter. Naidoo has many interesting profiles. One of which is his activity in the Apartheid that took place in South Africa.

Whether you know or not, Naidoo is a symbol of the new amnesty era.

10. Abiy Ahmed

Last but not the least. He became a prime minister in 2018. He is an Ethiopian. He occupied the office after the resignation of Hailemariam Desalegn. Within a space of 11 months, Eritrea and Ethiopia has made peace. Only a man of influence can do that.

Okay, okay. That is it. I hope you enjoyed the piece. Stay tuned as I write more interesting articles for your reading pleasures subsequently.

Foreign Affairs / Shoot To Kill Orders By Donald Trump Sparks Mixed Reactions by KenyanBlogger(m): 8:16pm On Apr 22, 2020
United States President Donald Trump has sparked mixed reactions after he ordered the US Navy to shoot down and destroy any and all Iranian gunboats should they harass the US ships.

Through his Wednesday afternoon tweet, Trump said Iranian gunboats shall not be spared if they cross ways with the Americans.

"I have instructed the United States Navy to shoot down and destroy any and all Iranian gunboats if they harass our ships at sea," he tweeted.

His tweet has sparked mixed reactions from the Americans, with some urging him to focus on COVID-19 pandemic instead of picking wars with Iran.

Others are siding with Trump on what they are saying to be 'clearing the mess' the former President Barack Obama left behind.

Here are some reactions taken from Twitter.

Nick Jack Pappas said: "We have enough to worry about at home without Trump's inept leadership provoking a war, too."

Andy Ostroy said: "You're nothing but a miserable, angry, ignorant, unqualified, incompetent, insecure, self-loathing, irresponsible, reckless, dangerous SOCIOPATH..Such a big tough guy on Twitter. Too bad when it was YOUR turn to suit up like a REAL MAN and defend America you hid behind your rich daddy like a draft-dodging COWARD

Heshmat Alavi said: "The mullahs' regime ruling #Iran harasses UN Navy ships for propaganda purposes. Thank you, President Trump, for reminding this regime that the Obama years are gone. And BTW, this regime does not represent the Iranian people.

DeAnna Lorraine said: "Thank you for keeping us safe against bad actors. This is all Obama's fault. He's the one who emboldened them by sending pallets of cash in the dead of night.
