Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed the impression of some world leaders about President Muhammadu Buhari. The ex -President, who spoke with reporters at his Abeokuta home yesterday, added that despite Nigeria’s “mistakes and missteps,” it is not doing badly at 55 as a nation. Obasanjo added that 55 years in the life of a nation was still relatively young and notwithstanding this, the country had managed to be dynamic and progressive. He said: “I heard some of the comments of those he (Buhari) met; the comment that probably will not come back to him. He met Clinton for almost one hour and President Clinton , when I joined him for his global initiative talked to me about the impression of our President, it was favourable. “Gordon Brown and I met him and we talked about issues. The few other leaders who met him gave me their impression and his debut so to say, it has been good. I think we are at the table, what they use to say that Nigeria is not at the table, now we are present at the table.” He said Nigerians should be willing to learn from past mistakes while core national values should also not be eroded to enable the real growth and progress become manifest. He noted that Nigeria was now well positioned with the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari for both recognition and active participation in global politics in a manner that would likely elicit positive attention from the international community. According to Obasanjo, feelers from the world leaders and statemen during the recent UN summit showed that President Muhammadu Buhari did not only have a good outing there, but also helped to place Nigeria at a strategic position for global politics. He identified youth unemployment, education, security, justice, the economy among others as areas the country should not joke with particularly corruption, saying it has the capacity to destroy everything noble about Nigeria. Obsanjo said: “Fifty five years in the life of a nation is comparatively young, growing and when you look at the life and history of those that you may call settled societies or reasonably matured countries, we are not doing too badly. “They have had missteps just as we are having missteps, they have made mistakes and most of them have learnt from their mistakes, they have been dynamic in the way they have progressed and I believe that we are doing the same thing. “What is important is that certain cardinal pinches, cardinal features of our national live, values, should not be eroded. And then we should also be willing to learn from out mistakes. “The President in his statement said Nigeria has the marks in making the potentialities of a great nation is just question of actualising our potentialities and that will require all hands on deck ; men, women, muslims, christians, young and old, irrespective of our location, our tribe, our social standing, Nigeria needs all hands on deck. “And we must also realise important issues that we must not play with, we must not play with the issue of education, we must not play with the issue of health for our people. “We must not play with the issue of employment for our teeming population particularly for our youths, we must not play with the issue of economy, we must not play with the issue of security, peace and justice. Justice and peace go hand in hand, we can’t have injustice and expect peace to reign supreme.” - Nation www.laidenews.com/2015/10/what-clinton-gordon-brown-told-me-about.html?m=1 |

Today as I was washing a long ago soaked clothes long forgotten in the greyish brown effort with the sharp smell of ingratitude, I heard a loud shout of quarrelling folks at other other side of the road at the back of our house. I climbed the stairs in acticipation of the street reenactment of Klitchco and Sam Peter (The first bout ooo). I saw a respectable man, he looked churchy, as he trades blows with a monster looking giantly OLOKADA man. I saw his wife with a baby in her arms trying to stop him, The most significant is the shout of the about seven year old son, 'Daddy! Daddy! I didn't hear his full plea but I knew it was to retrain his father. But the man was out of control. I knew he must be fighting for his right. But what remained with me was the re-echoing of the boys call 'Daddy! Daddy! He was afraid! I went back to wash the clothes as I thought within me that what ever that small boy must have learnt about self control would have been eroded today. In the future, as a campus guy, he might get angry and see a stick nearby, he will break the offenders head because today he will learn that SELF CONTROL isn't possible. The father lost the opportunity of showing to his son that he too can listen to the call of a child when he is wrong. I am sad. www.laidenews.com |

Hundreds of protesters on Tuesday barricaded the entrance of the National Assembly in Abuja singing solidarity songs in support of the embattled Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki. They also warned anti-graft agencies to desist from being used against perceived “political enemies.” They carried placards with different inscriptions such as, “Enough is enough, we support Saraki and Ekweremadu.” Saraki is facing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal over alleged falsification of documents in his assets declaration form when he was governor in Kwara State. - Punch www.laidenews.com |
Muslim man, Asadullah Khan, strangled his own 19-year-old daughter to death with his bare hands after learning from police she had been caught shoplifting condoms to have sex with her forbidden boyfriend. He and his wife Shazia then dressed the dead girl named Lareeb (left), a dental technician, in her clothes, wheeled her in a wheelchair from their high-rise apartment to the family car, drove to a secluded embankment in their home city of Darmstadt in Germany, and tipped the corpse down it. Khan, 51, with tears streaming down his face, admitted the killing because in his eyes she had brought 'dishonour' on the family with her love for a boy he didn't approve of. He and his wife were wed in an arranged marriage and he wanted the same for her. Khan and his wife, originally from Pakistan, are on trial for murder at the State Court in Darmstadt. Shazia, 41, described how she was a downtrodden woman, totally in the thrall of her husband, and unable to save her daughter. The court heard how the parents sent Lareeb's sister Nida, 14, to a relative on the evening of the murder in January this year. Nida gave evidence against both her parents, saying her mother was as strict as their father, often striking both of them. The mother held out her arms to Nida when she appeared in court on Friday but Nida refused to acknowledge her. Nida said: 'My Mama was not suppressed, she could do what she wanted. She used to hit me with a stick. 'We were never allowed to talk about her boyfriend. My father used to say my sister should be forcibly married in Pakistan.' The court heard Nida is now in therapy and has nothing more to do with her parents. Shazia said that on the night of the murder Lareeb had quarelled again with her father and hit him. He later crept into her room as she slept, knelt astride her and strangled her. 'I couldn't stop him,' the mother said in a statement read by her lawyer. 'I have rheumatism and didn't have the strength to fight him off. I wanted to scream, but I couldn't. 'Lareeb stayed away from the home for several nights in a row and stopped wearing the headscarf. One day we received a letter from the police saying she had been caught trying to steal condoms. 'At this point it became clear that there was sexual contact. When I showed the letter to my husband he snapped.' Killer Asadullah, who speaks no German, said he 'loved' his daughter. The trial continues. www.laidenews.com |
A 46-year-old man, Morris Ndidwe, has allegedly raped his 11-year-old daughter and impregnated a neighbour’s daughter in Delta State. The man has been arrested by the Delta State Police Command. Ndidwe, according to his wife, had made several attempts of having carnal knowledge of his 11-year-old daughter in the past before the last one that landed him in police net. His wife claimed that her husband’s behaviour had made her quit the marriage initially and that she only returned after several appeals and an assurance that he had repented from his ways. She said she had initially moved out of her matrimonal home after her husband impregnated their neighbour’s daughter. She said, “My daughter told me what she went through in the hand of her father whenever I was not around and when confronted, my husband denied, saying, he had stopped the act . “One afternoon, I returned from church and caught him with our daughter. Again after much pleading, I relented on my resolve to quit the marriage.” The last straw that broke the camel’s back, according to the wife, was the event that transpired last week. Ndidwe’s wife said, “Last week, around 9pm, my husband drove me to the church for a vigil. He was alone with our children. The following day when I returned, my daughter told me what her father did to her. When I decided to check her private part my husband refused and almost beat me, but my neighbours intervened.” But the 11-year-old girl (names withheld) has asked the police to prosecute her father saying she wanted to see him jailed because he might do worse things to her. Confirming the arrest of the suspect, the state police commissioner, Alkali Baba Usma, said he had made useful statements to the police. Meanwhile, a middle-aged man who reportedly went to visit his female friend at Agidaese Street, in Ogwashi-Uku Community of the state was said to have died on Friday. The man, according to sources, slumped in his girlfriend’s room after a marathon sexual intercourse and died on the spot. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs.Celestina Kalu, confirmed that the woman had been arrested by police in Ogwashi-Uku while the body of the victim had been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy. -Punch www.laidenews.com |
The South African government on Friday denied reports that it has denied entry of American business icon Bill Gates because he failed to abide by the country’s visa regulations. There was no record of Gates having entered the country in the past few days, the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) said. According to the South African.com website, Gates wanted to visit South Africa a week ago but was turned away because his daughter didn’t have an unabridged birth certificate. Referring to the reports, DHA spokesperson Mayihlome Tshwete said that if Gates were to visit, he would be expected to abide by the law. “If Bill Gates had gone to a port of entry and didn’t have the necessary documents our immigration officers were going to apply the law and ask him to provide documents,” he said. But Tshwete said the reports about Gates being denied entry were false. Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba reportedly is looking into this matter. Under the new visa regulations implemented on June 1 this year, children entering or leaving South Africa must present unabridged birth certificates, in addition to passports. The controversial new visa regulations have sparked sharp criticism for affecting tourism. In another change in visa regulations taking effect in May last year, visitors are required to provide biometric data when they apply for visas. This is a particular problem for people in large countries, such as China, where there are South African consulates only in Beijing and Shanghai. Also on Friday, Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom said Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa is to announce soon whether the government will scrap controversial the visa regulations. Hanekom said a task team has compiled a report on its findings on how the regulations are affecting international tourism. “The task team is now ready to present its recommendations so we are waiting to be convened again by the Deputy president -Punch www.laidenews.com |

Motorcycle drivers on Thursday shut down the
Ijegun Road in the Alimosho area of Lagos State,
after a woman, Idongesit Ekpo, and her husband,
Godwin, were shot by a team of policemen
attached to the Isheri Osun Police Division. While Idongesit died on the spot, Godwin was said to be in a critical condition at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, where he was taken for treatment. PUNCH Metro learnt that the couple was returning from a church programme on Wednesday in a tricycle belonging to the family. Our correspondents were told that Godwin met a police checkpoint at Obalagbe bus stop, where some other tricycle drivers were being reportedly extorted by an eight-man police team. He was said to have been flagged down by one of the policemen, but as he sped past, one of the officers shattered his windscreen with a baton. A police corporal, identified as Aremu Musesiu, was said to have opened fire on the tricycle. It was learnt that the bullet pierced through the tricycle back side and hit Idongesit, who was breastfeeding a three-month-old baby. Her husband, Godwin, who looked back when the shot was fired, was said to have also been hit in the neck. The policemen were said to have hurriedly taken money from the tricycle drivers they had earlier detained, before fleeing the scene. Tricycle drivers in the community trooped out on Thursday to protest the death and demanded justice for the victims. The protesters held placards, some of which read, ‘Isheri Police, your generation will suffer,’ ‘Stop killing us,’ among others. protest train went to the Isheri Osun Police Station, where they met a team of armed policemen in more than six vans. An Armoured Personnel Carrier was also mounted on the road to the station. The Financial Secretary of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, Lagos State branch, Chinanzor Ifechiga, was brutalised and her telephone seized by the Divisional Police Officer. Ifechiga, who was accused of filming the protest and taking pictures, was manhandled by eight policemen, who struggled to take the phone from her on the order of the DPO. The protesters left the station for Ijegun Road, where they ordered other tricycle operators to cease work. Six police vans packed full with policemen from Idimu, Igando, Ikotun, Gowon Estate and Isheri Osun divisions, were observed by our correspondents on the road. A tricycle driver, Henry Chibuzor, said the couple was shot at around 10pm on Wednesday. He said, “I was going home around 10pm when I saw the eight-man team asking me to stop at a checkpoint. I was there with four other tricycle drivers. “The man was coming from church with his family. As he got to the junction, he swerved and his tricycle mistakenly brushed their patrol van. “A policeman hit the tricycle’s windscreen with a baton and damaged it. The second policeman fired a bullet which hit the woman in the neck, came out from the other side, and hit her husband too.” He said the policemen collected N5,000 from him and also extorted money from other tricycle drivers. Another witness, Kabiru Olaoye, said the residents quickly formed a crowd at the scene and prevented the policemen from leaving. He added that the cops called for reinforcement, adding that officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad and policemen from surrounding divisions arrived at the scene and rescued the killer-cops. Olaoye said, “The policemen, who perpetrated the havoc, were eight in number and they included Demola and Aremu. Aremu was the one who fired the shot.” PUNCH Metro learnt that while the woman died immediately, the man was quickly rushed to the Igando General Hospital. “The man was rejected at the Igando hospital and was taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital at Ikeja.” A tricycle driver, Oladimeji Ayinde, said the police deposited the remains of the victim in a mortuary. It was learnt that the family tricycle had been taken to the Area M Police Command, while the children of the victims were with the police. A member of the tricycle drivers association in the area, Bamidele Olorunshogo, said tricycle drivers in the community were being constantly harassed by the police in the Isheri Osun station. Olorunshogo said, “Their mode of operation is that whenever the police arrest you, you will pay at least N3,000. If you don’t have the money on you, you will be allowed to go home and bring the money.” Another member of the association, Salman Aboyeji, told PUNCH Metro that the police at the station were fond of unlawful arrest and detention of drivers. He said the protest that greeted the death of Idongesit, led to the release of 13 other tricycle drivers, who had been arrested under controversial circumstances. Albert Itekena, a 300-level student of Political Science, who also operates a tricycle in the community, called for an end to the intimidation. A member of the CDHR, Ifechiga, who was allegedly brutalised during the Thursday protest called for justice. Ifechiga said, “The DPO said I was one of them (the police) and I should not join the protesters. Because I refused, he said I should release my phone to him. “He said he would disgrace me before everybody. “He pointed a gun at me and the crowd dared him to shoot. He then ordered eight policemen to beat me up because I refused to give him my phone. He humiliated me before the protesters. But I am determined to get justice for the couple; and I want my phone back.” The Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, who confirmed the incident, said Aremu had been arrested and detained. He added that the DPO of Isheri Osun had also been issued a query for disobeying the Inspector General of Police’s instruction. He said, “The police are doing all in our capacity to ensure that the deceased’s children are taken care of. The police corporal involved has been taken into custody. When we complete all necessary disciplinary action, he will be charged to court for murder. “The team leader and the DPO of Isheri Osun division have also been issued queries for disobeying the IG with regards to policemen performing duties out of uniform, and without a properly-labelled police van.” |
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday declared wanted the man managing Senate President Bukola Saraki’s property company, Mr. Kennedy Izuagbe, for alleged N3.6bn money laundering. Izuagbe, managing director of Carlisle Properties and Investment Limited, a firm said to be owned by Saraki, was alleged to have conspired with others to launder the said amount while he was the Managing Director of the defunct Societe Generale Bank. The Deputy Director in the office of the Attorney- General of the Federation, M.S. Hazzan, had, in charges filed against the Senate President, said he owned Carlisle Properties Limited. The Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said in a statement on Thursday that Izuagbe, a 45-year-old banker, was declared wanted because he could not be reached by the anti-graft agency. Uwujaren said that Izuagbe, a native of Iviukhua village, near Agenebode, in the Etsako Local Government Area of Edo State had fled the country. He said, “Kennedy Izuagbe, a former director of Societe Generale Bank Nigeria Plc and Managing Director of Carlisle Properties and Investment Limited, has been declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. “Izuagbe, 45, who is being investigated in a case of conspiracy and money laundering to the tune of over N3.6 bn, has gone into hiding and all efforts to reach him have proved abortive. “He is linked to the several shady deals and gross financial misconducts that took place in the bank, in which several millions of Naira were granted as loan without due diligence. “The suspect, who is believed to have fled the country, is a native of Iviukhua village, near Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.” He urged the members of the public with information on the whereabouts of the wanted banker to contact the EFCC offices in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Gombe and Kano or the nearest police station. Meanwhile, the Senate President on Thursday dragged the Code of Conduct Bureau and the Code of Conduct Tribunal to court in a bid to stop his arraignment for alleged false assets declaration on Friday (today). Saraki, in an exparte motion filed at a Federal High Court, Abuja, asked the court to stop the Federal Ministry of Justice, the CCB and the tribunal as well as a director in the office of the Attorney General of the Federation, M. S Hassan, from taking any further step at the CCT pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit he filed before the court. Hassan, in a 13-count charge filed at the CCT on September 11, had among others, stated that Saraki made anticipatory asset declaration of a house in Ikoyi in his asset declaration form he submitted to the CCB in 2003. Saraki was said to have declared that the said house was possessed through Carlisle Properties, the company headed by Izuagbe, who was declared wanted on Thursday by the EFCC. In his exparte motion, the Senate President is praying the court to declare that the Ministry of Justice has not complied with the provision of the 3rd Schedule of Section 24(1) of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act to act before proffering a charge against him. Arguing the motion on behalf of the senate president, Mahmud Magaji (SAN), said based on the provision of Section 24 of the CCB and CCT Act, Saraki’s prosecution before the CCT ought to have been initiated by the Attorney General of the Federation or any officer directed by the AGF. He argued that, “In the absence of any subsisting AGF in the time being, this court has the jurisdiction to direct parties to maintain status quo pending the hearing of the motion on notice.” He argued further that since there was no subsisting AGF, the charge against him by the official of the Federal Ministry of Justice before the CCT is void as the provisions of section 24 (1) of the CCB and the tribunal was not complied with. Justice Ahmed Ramat Mohammed, in a ruling in his chamber, summoned the chairmen of the CCB and the CCT to appear before him on September 21, 2015 to show cause why they should not be restrained from arraigning Saraki. The judge ordered that the respondents in the motion should be served with all the court processes, including the motion on notice for the interim order or injunction and motion exparte, and that the hearing notice should be served on all the respondents. The order, the judge held, was made pursuant to the provision or Order 26 Rule 10 of the Federal High Court (Civil procedure) Rules 2009. The other allegations contained in the suit filed at the CCT against Saraki include alleged failure to declare property on Plot 2A, Glover Road, Ikoyi, Lagos; failure to declare property on No. 1, Tagus Street, Maitama, Abuja (Plot 2482, Cadastral Zone A06, Abuja) and failure to declare property No.3, Tagus Street, Maitama, Abuja (Plot 2481, Cadastral Properties Limited). Others are claiming to own property on No 42 Gerard Road, Ikoyi and earning N110, 000,000.00 per annum at a time the said property was under construction; failure to declare N375m GTB loan converted to 1.5m Pound Sterling and used to purchase property in London; operating a foreign bank account; transfer of $3.4m from GTB to foreign bank account during his tenure as governor and failure to declare leasehold interest in No. 42, Remi Fani-Kayode Street, Ikeja. |

Government officials have met with the
leaders of Boko Haram sect for talks on
freedom for the abducted Chibok girls,
President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday said
in France. He however added that apart from ensuring that it negotiates with genuine leaders of the sect, the government rejected the condition given to it by the sect to proceed with the negotiations. The condition is for the release from custody of the main suspect behind the production of Improvised Explosives Devices (IEDs). The President, who was rounding off his state visit to France, spoke during a meeting with the Nigerian community, who met with him under the auspices of Nigerians In the Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Buhari said: “The issue of Chibok girls has occupied our minds and because of the international attention it drew and the sympathy throughout the country and the world, the government is negotiating with some of Boko Haram’s leadership. “It is a very sensitive development in the sense that first we have to establish who are the genuine leaders of the Boko Haram. That is number one. Number two, what are their terms? The first impression we had was not very encouraging,” he said He said: “They wanted us to release one of their leaders who is a strategic person in developing and making IEDs which have been causing a lot of havoc in the country by blowing up people in churches, mosques, market places, motor parks and other places. “But it is very important that if we are going to talk to anybody, we have to know how much he is worth. “Let them bring all the girls and then, we will be prepared to negotiate. I will allow them to come back to Nigeria or to be absorbed into the community. We have to be very careful; the concern we have for the Chibok girls, one only imagine if they got a daughter there between 14 and 18 years and for more than one and a half years, a lot of the parents who have died would rather see the graves of their daughters rather the condition they imagine they were in. “This has drawn a lot of sympathy thoughout the world; that is why this government is getting very hard in negotiating and getting the balance of those who are alive.” Buhari assured the Nigerians that his administration was doing everything to improve on the state of the economy through provision of infrastructure in critical areas. www.Laidenews.com for News and More hot topics |
