candidates who wrote the post-University
Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)
last weekend. The five best candidates will be given scholarships. Adewole, who was represented by the Deputy-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emilolorun Ayelari, said the result is now available on the institution’s website. The candidates are: Adetunji AbdulRaham (55328333ED, 86, Law); Amaji Obinna Charles (55110959DE, 86, Medicine and Surgery); Adebiyi Tijesunimi (55361970BC, 85, Electrical and Electronics Engineering); Oke Dorcas (55974720AJ, 83, Medicine and Surgery) and Olowosulu Cassandra Olawumi (56630251JB, 83, Medicine and Surgery). A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, says Nigeria has been destined to fail since its creation by the British in 1914. He said the British created Nigeria such that the ‘poor North’ would continue to rule while the ‘rich South’ will remain oppressed. Fani-Kayode said this in a Facebook post on Tuesday titled, “The 9th Earl of Bathrust and the Nigerian State.” He said shortly before independence, the British gave the North permanent rule. He said, “The Nigeria that they (British) handed over to us in 1960 was nothing but an unworkable artificial state and a poisoned chalice. It was destined to fail right from the outset. “Worse still, they handed us that poisoned chalice with a malicious and mischievous intent and without any recourse to our people in terms of any form of a national referendum.” Fani-Kayode, said what the British did in Nigeria was replicated in other countries like India and Sudan, adding that those countries had since divided having woken up politically. He said it was regrettable that Nigerians had failed to take their destinies into their own hands. He added, “The British did the same thing in varying degrees when they left virtually each and every one of their other third world colonies. The most obvious cases, however, were Nigeria, Sudan, India and the nation that was formerly known as Malaya. “Every one of these four countries had monumental problems with sustaining their unity after independence and all of them, with the exception of Nigeria, were compelled to breakup into smaller entities before they could bring out the best in themselves as a people and fully exercise their human potential. “Consequently, India broke up into three and became India, Pakistan and Bangladesh; the Sudan broke into two and became Southern Sudan and the Sudan and Malaya broke into two and became Malaysia and Singapore. Nigeria has yet to find the courage and fortitude to go that far and whether we will eventually break up or not remains to be seen.” Fani-Kayode said if the terms of the ‘marriage’ between the North and the South were not reviewed, there could be further crisis. He added, “The result of the amalgamation was predictable. It was either the ‘poor husband’ (the North) would fully subjugate and eventually kill the ‘rich wife’ (the South) or the ‘rich wife’ would fully subjugate and eventually kill the ‘poor husband’. And we are right in the middle of that struggle for mutual subjugation till today.” The Peoples Democratic Party chieftain said the only way to address the “unfair” arrangement was a complete devolution of powers. He said Nigeria must embrace true federalism. - Punch But what does man really want? Should Nigeria also break up to actuallize her Destiny. The Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) , on
Monday accused President Muhammadu
Buhari and the ruling All Progressives
Congress, APC , of running down Nigeria’ s
economy . The party alleged that the country ’ s economy has been on a downward slide since the President took over . But the APC has constantly maintained that the current government is only cleaning the “ mess” left behind by the PDP government, led by former President Goodluck Jonathan. The PDP said it was urging the President Mohammadu Buhari -led APC administration to pay urgent attention to the management of the nation’ s economy . The opposition party expressed worry that the economy has remained on “ rapid fall ” since the last four months “ apparently due to the absence of clear -cut fiscal policy direction and an economic team to deal with the domestic and global challenges associated with a developing economy . ” In a statement signed by PDP ’ s National Publicity Secretary , Chief Olisa Metuh, the party said : “ whereas the PDP is in full support of the President’ s efforts in tackling corruption and insurgency , the party is however concerned about the grave economic situation we now face, as well as indices from global economic watchers, which this administration has failed to give deserving attention , despite its predictable negative impact. ” The PDP said as a responsible party , it is duty -bound , beyond politics , to draw the President’ s attention to the fact that under the prevailing circumstances , the nation is evidently heading to economic doldrums. “ Mr. President , this is no longer about politics and partisanship. It is about the economy of our dear nation and the well -being of the Nigerian citizens . “ Recall that we have severally in the past , drawn attention to official reports showing that the unemployment situation in the country as well as inflation rate are growing at frightening dimensions , not to talk of the continued decline in domestic and direct foreign investments, all due to uncertainty created by the lack of economic direction of APC -led administration. “ The situation has become even of utmost concern following the failure of this administration to articulate any interventionist policy at this critical moment , when credible global economic monitors have continued to predict that oil price may fall as low as $20 per barrel . “ It is worrisome that whilst other countries are taking deliberate steps to enhance their investment profiles and hedge their economies at this time, the APC - led Federal Government has done nothing in that direction , but has centered on partisan politics and witch- hunt of perceived opponents, while the economy remains vulnerable and unattended to . “ We caution strongly that this approach to governance is not healthy for our nation. Indeed , the time has come for Mr. President to end the apparent lethargy in his administration and take urgent step to set up a crack economic team of experts to immediately swing into action and salvage the situation by opening up all economic outlets, which have been stagnated in the last four months. “ In managing this economy at this time, we urge Mr. President, as the father of the nation, to look beyond partisan politics and ensure that the policy frameworks and populist economic projects laid by the PDP administration, especially in the non -oil sectors are not allowed to rot , but adequately utilized for the good of all . “ In this regard therefore, we wish to draw attention to various agricultural projects and programmes established by the PDP , especially in the northern states, such as various dams and irrigation projects , the e- wallet financial empowerment system to farmers, associated to the over 2 million direct farm jobs , as well as the Green Belt project under Presidential Initiative on Afforestation in Kano and 10 other northern states, all in line with PDP ’ s agenda to return the region as the food basket of the nation. “ The PDP believes that in the interest of millions of Nigerians citizens who look up to the political class for direction , it is now imperative on the APC -led federal government to pay deserving attention to the economy and continue the policy of the past administration of opening the space for harnessing indigenous potentials. “ Finally, we wish to reassure that the PDP , as a responsible party, will remain committed to providing credible and robust alternatives and views to government policies and programmes , in the general interest and wellbeing of the Nigerian people , ” the party said . - PM News Posted by: www.laidenews.com |
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
has reopened investigations into the Nigerian
Immigration Service recruitment tragedy in 2014,
which led to the death of 19 young job seekers,
The PUNCH learnt on Monday. Operatives of the anti-graft agency on Monday quizzed the immediate past Comptroller General of the NIS, Mr. David Paradang, for over seven hours. Paradang was asked questions about the N555m said to have been collected from applicants who participated in the 2014 exercise. The Senate under David Mark as president had in 2014 probed the tragedy but the report of the investigative committee did not see the light of the day before the seventh senate ended. The PUNCH learnt that the EFCC invited Paradang to appear before it to provide explanation on how the money collected from job seekers in March 2014 was spent. A top operative of the commission told one of our correspondents on the condition of anonymity that the NIS under Paradang and those who played crucial roles in the ill-fated recruitment only declared N45m as the money collected. The source said that investigations conducted by operatives of the commission revealed that the applicants paid N600m. It was added that top officials of the Ministry of Interior and the Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration and Prison Services Board, only declared N45m as the amount collected. Paradang was said to have arrived at the Idiagbon House headquarters of the EFCC at Wuse II, Abuja, by 10 am and was taken straight to the interrogation room for a interrogation session that lasted seven hours. As of 5pm when our correspondents filed this story, Paradang was still responding to questions from EFCC operatives probing the alleged fraud. The source said, “Operatives of the commission are interrogating the former Comptroller General, Immigration, Mr. David Paradang. “The man was invited and he came on his own and he was immediately ushered into the interrogation room. No, he was not arrested. “Operatives are interrogating him in relation with the Immigration recruitment exercise that led to the death of many innocent Nigerians in 2014. “The commission is probing the disappearance of N600m that was received from the applicants. “There is this report that those who carried out that exercise declared only N45m out of the N600m they collected. We want to know where the remaining N555m is” The PUNCH also learnt that the EFCC might invite the immediate past Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro, and other top officials of the interior ministry in relation with the issue. The Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr.Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed to our correspondent on the telephone that Paradang was at the EFCC. “He was invited and he came,” he said and refused further comments. Before the May 15, 2014 tragedy, a recruitment committee headed by S.D Tapgun, the Director/ Secretary of the board, had recommended that the recruitment exercise be shifted to either the last weekend in March or second week in April, 2014 for proper arrangement to be made. The recruitment committee also proposed that N5m should be budgeted for hiring of ambulances and buying of water. At its last meeting held on March 7, 2014, the committee raised a memo to Moro on its recommendations, but the memo was ignored. The 16 members of the committee were drawn from the CDFIPB, NIS, Ministry of Interior, and Drexel Tech Nigeria Limited, which managed the online portal for the recruitment exercise. The members include Tapgun (CDFIPB); JaeI Kpatuvvak, Deputy Director (A&P), CDFIPB; Okhamera A. I., Asst. Director (Admin), CDFIPB; Bello Torankawa, Asst. Director (A&P), CDFIPB; Hamid AbduII-Iamid, Asst. Director (IMM), CDFIPB; Aduku, M. M., Asst. Director (D&GP), CDFIPB; and Oyedeji, T.V., CIS (APU) , NIS. Others are Abubakar A. A., Interior ministry; Chukwu O. C., Rep. Asst. Director (F&A), CDFIPB; I. M. Makama, LA, CDFIPB; Nasiru Yusuf, ICT Unit, CDFIPB; . Shehu Mohammed, Deputy Director (D &GP), CDFIPB; Mukah O. S., Chief Admin. Officer (FFS); Theodore Maiyaki, Drexei Tech.; Wiiiiam Butau, Drexel Tech; and Abioye Bankole, Drexei Tech. The committee budgeted Nll2,38l, 200 for the exercise to cover Duty Tour Allowance for immigration officials, cost of radio and television announcements, cost of setting examination questions, cost of digital printing machine, marking scanners and contingency (five per cent of the total costs). Though each applicant paid N1000 for the online registration, no money was released to the recruitment committee by the Interior ministry. The committee met with officials of Drexel Tech Nigeria Limited and asked the firm to provide funds for the recruitment because there was no provision for the exercise in the 2014 budget. The firm released N45m on March 12 to enable the aptitude test to hold as scheduled. Following the recruitment tragedy, former President Goodluck Jonathan directed the ministry to refund the N1,000 to the applicants, but the directive was not carried out by the ministry. The career of Parradang ended on August 21, 2015 when he was suspended by the Federal Government for illegally recruiting 1,600 personnel into the service in May, 2015 without the approval of the Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration and Prisons Services Board, which has the statutory power to recruit. He was said to have recruited 700 Assistant Inspectors of Immigration and 900 Immigration Assistants III, towards the end of Jonathan’s tenure. He was subsequently replaced by Martin Abeshi by President Muhammadu Buhari a week later. Though the Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, visited the Presidential Villa to plead with Buhari, the sacking of the suspended CG indicated that the visit was not successful. - Punch WWW.laidenews.com |

FRIDAY LAUGH !!!!!!!!!!!!! My friend invited me to his church for a thanksgiving service, and I sat at the front row, when it was time for offering, the offering basket was passed around. Despite the Pastor charge for good offering, I still hurriedly and secretly pulled out N50 from my pocket and dropped it. Just then, the person behind me tapped me on the shoulder and handed me a N1,000 note. I smiled, how generous, then majestically I looked around and put the N1,000 in the basket and passed it on, then I turned and thanked the man seriously for being so generous. He replied "don't mention'' be more careful next time, it fell from your pocket" WhaaaaT!!!!! ![]() ?....... Usher pleasewait, wrong Transaction!!!!!!!!! It is no news that there is fuel scarcity across the country,if yours is different then i say una they enjoy o.But for me and others in my state and the state where i do my thing getting fuel is like that popular tv programme The gulder ultimate search where you look out for a medal kept by some folks like the oil marketers. Yesterday, i had to wake up around 6:30am just to resume to my new working place, a filling station 14km away from where my humble abode. On getting there i saw the regular long car queue with countless kegs for people who either could not bring their vehicle along due to fuel shortage or some belonging to the okadaman. i was there till around 8:15am when a guy knocked on my door saying black market secretly, immediately i told him yes go bring am at the price of N165.I was so lucky What about you? or Una get Petrol for your side abi? go bring am |
