The exchange rate between the Nigerian naira and the US dollar reached an unprecedented low of N999/$1 on NAFEM, while unofficial P2P trading reflected a rate of N1,152/$1, marking a concerning decline in the currency’s value.

In a significant development, Nigeria witnessed an unprecedented drop in its currency value, as the exchange rate between the naira and the US dollar hit an all-time low of N999/$1 during trading on October 19, 2023. This alarming situation was reported based on intraday trading data from the FMDQ, where forex is officially traded through the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM).

It is worth noting that this N999/$1 rate is an intraday high, and market analysts predict that it may close at an even lower rate when the market concludes its trading activities for the day.

In addition to the official forex market, a worrying trend is also evident in unofficial trading. In early afternoon trading on the black market known as P2P, where forex is exchanged informally and often involves cryptocurrencies, the exchange rate surged to N1,152/$1. This sharp increase underscores the ongoing and steady depreciation of the naira.

This concerning financial development is a continuation of a trend that has been affecting Nigeria. Just a day prior, the naira had already depreciated to N1,100 to the US dollar on the parallel market, while the official market rate stood at N790 per dollar. The steady decline in the value of the naira against the US dollar poses significant economic challenges for Nigeria and its citizens.

The crisis rocking the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has taken another dimension, as the National Chairman of the party, Dr Major Agbo, loyal to the founder, Dr Boniface Aniebonam, escaped assassination attempt in his office in Abuja.

Recall that the NNPP has been engulfed in crisis, leading to the creation of two factions both claiming to be the rightful owners of the party.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, Agbo said that he escaped the assassination attempt in the NNPP newly opened office, adding that the attempt was made on his life while he was in the office on Monday 16th August 2023.

Agbo said: “The most critical reason for this briefing today is to bring you to speed with an attempt made to assassinate me here in this office on Monday 16th August 2023. I walked in here at about 2.45pm and shortly after that two men walked in, ignoring the protocol advice from the desk boys in the front office.

"They walked in with weapons demanding to meet me, unknown to them they were talking to me. It was evident that they never knew me physically, infact my saving grace was that I was not seating on my chair. Pointing a short gun on me, they demanded that I produce ‘Major Agbo,’ who one of them claimed was his course mate at Command and Staff College, Jaji.

“I asked him if he would identify his course mate he was talking about if seen, he replied ‘yes.’ I then told them Major Agbo was not around. They speedily withdrew, ran into their ash-colored Toyota Corolla car parked by the express roadside (to aid escape) and sped away.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we are all aware of the recent developments in the party as a result of attempts to hijack it by some ill adviced elements and political opportunists.

“Let me also confirm to you that I have received several threats through WhatsApp voice calls telling me I would pay with my life for standing on the way in their quest to take the party from its founder and its mother organisation – NAGAFF.

“They made real their threat on Monday but failed woefully as they could not identify me. The matter has been reported to the appropriate quarters for action.

“It is my sincere hope that you would lend your voices to this brazen attempt to take my life over what does not belong to them. It is my hope that you would let the whole world know that my life is presently in danger by usurpers who were not part of our party in its twenty two years of existence but only joined us last year.”

He further said: “You recall that the last time I interacted with you in August, I told you of series of anti party activities being perpetrated by the then ag National Chairman, Alh Abba Kawu Ali and ex National Secretary, Oladipupo Olayoku as well as the illegalities been perpetrated by the Prince Onu Nwaeze led Disciplinary Committee now disbanded.

“Recall that the media briefing of 28th August 2023 at the Rockview Hotel in Lagos did not only disband the then Abba Kawu Ali led NWC, it expelled Abba Kawu, Oladipupo Olayoku, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Buba Galadima and Bar Ladipo Johnson after they failed to appear before the Disciplinary Committee set up to hear them.

"The party since then has witnessed a series of changes including the setting up of the new NWC led by myself and a new BOT led by Chief Temitope Aluko. The party has also witnessed the relocation of its National Secretariat to Wuse Zone 4 where we are presently addressing you.

“We have also set up new Zonal structures in the six geopolitical zones with six new National Vice Chairmen already sworn in. States that were hitherto in comatose and some where the unfriendly posture of the Kwankwassiya group (who you all know came in to utilise the platform for the 2023 general election and have since left) created avoidable upheavals have also been reorganised.

"The exercise has seen the emergence of new leadership in states such as Adamawa, Zamfara, Benue, Kogi, Niger, Kaduna, Yobe, Borno to mention but a few. It’s noteworthy to tell you that the family spirit that existed but was distorted by the Kwankwassiya group has since returned and those states are gradually now building up for 2027.”

The Federal Government on Thursday announced the closure of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos starting from midnight of Saturday, October 21, to midnight of Sunday, October 22, to carry out repairs.

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mrs Olukorede Kesha, in a statement, said the government was ready to begin comprehensive rehabilitation works on the bridge, starting with repairs of the critical portions.

Kesha said the Federal Government wished to inform the motoring public that it was currently working on plans to carry out comprehensive repairs of the Third Mainland Bridge.

“However, in order to alleviate the pains currently being experienced on the bridge, the Ministry would be carrying out palliative works on the most critically failed sections along the Adeniji bound carriageway on Sunday, Oct. 22, preparatory to the comprehensive repair works,” she said.

She advised motorists to cooperate with the traffic management officials by obeying and observing all diversions as directed for seamless movement.

“However, motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes where possible during the period of the palliative works as the Adeniji bound of the bridge will be closed to traffic from Saturday, Oct. 21 to Sunday, 22nd 12.00 midnight,” she said.

Hi everyone, this is something I have observed for some time now.
Ever since my last relationship in 2021 I have found myself not loving any lady. I was emotionally invested in that relationship makachi.

I can slide into a lady DM and start a conversation. Interesting conversation, but I get easily wearied. I will just lose interest. I have had the opportunity to meeting interesting dates, but I easily pull out the plug .

And I have been seriously searching for a partner ohhh. This is not funny Man.

One lady that I have genuinely open up to love said she isn't ready for emotional relationship now cos she want to focus on her final exams coming up . She is begging me to wait for her till December. I like her cos we are best of friends now. But as it stands now, I don dey develop cold feet towards her.

I honestly don't want to come to terms that I won't find a lady to love cos I seriously want to settle down.

I have a friend like that... In the beginning I could tell that there was something gayish about him but I didn't confront him because I didn't want to sound rude.

I'd deliberately bring up discussions about gays just to see his reaction and he hated everything that had to do with gays and couldn't even stand the sight of them.

After he graduated, he moved to another province and started working as a chef... He slowly started opening up, one day he called and told me everything... Apparently the community he's from still stigmatize gays and lesbians... I just laughed and told him that I knew from the first day I saw him that he was gay.

But anyways, if you are indeed straight and like women, then that's good...

A Police Inspector identified as Istifanus Kwanchi has been arrested on the orders of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, for allegedly firing shots at the popular Ladipo market in the Mushin area of the state.

The mobile Police Inspector was seen in a viral video firing repeatedly into the air to celebrate the reopening of the auto parts market.

The state government had in September 2023 shut down four markets: Ladipo, Agbado Oke-Odo, Oyingno and Alayabiagba markets over environmental infractions.

Ladipo market was recently reopened after weeks of closure in line with the state government’s directive.

Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest of the inspector in a post on X (formerly Twitter)

“The police officer in this video, Inspector Istifanus Kwanchi, serving with the Mobile Police (MOPOL), has been brought in for appropriate disciplinary actions. @LagosPoliceNG condemns in its entirety all forms of unprofessional and unethical behaviour,” he wrote.

He said that CP Owohunwa had ordered the immediate commencement of disciplinary proceedings against the officer for his “unprofessional, unethical and dangerous behaviour.”

The police assured members of the public that the Command would not tolerate any form of deviant behaviour from its officers and men, while those found culpable would be dealt with accordingly.

The police had on Tuesday vowed to probe the viral video, with the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, saying, “We will identify the man with AK-47 and do the needful. Thanks.”
