paxx: My parents want me to marry a girl that they hand picked for me from my community. Shes drop dead gorgeous and our families are perfectly coupled together.
My long term gf is from a different area, and I wanted to marry her. Yes we've only been together for 2 years but I know she LOVES ME.
Who should I pick?
The girl my parents picked is GORGEOUS and can bring our family alot of political connections and wealth. But my long term gf is obsessed with me, and I love her.
The girl my parents picked claims she loves me. but I dont know how since we dont know each other. My dad said I should give her a chance, and went as far as to say that if I marry the girl im dating he will cut me off.
I ended up marry the one from my community traditionally after my long term gf aborted my child. Since I live in a different country, when I went back home to where I stay with my gf. I married her in the court house. (Yes I'm crazy)
Now I have two wives and I have to divorce one.
If I divorce my long time gf, she will hate me. If I divorce the one from my community traditionally I'll be in trouble in my area, and it will affect my family.
What should I choose? Your post is the reason why your parents even chose for you….because you as a man don’t even know what you want for yourself. Imagine coming online to ask this silly question. Do what pleases you. |

We'll be basically buying their kindness. You already get the point of what I’m saying but you just feel like making a strawman argument. Did I say you must do it to everyone? Doing so once in a while helps and encourages people to keep being good not like you’re trying to buy it. |

They are just wicked hiding under Tinubu economy to increase rent…how many people earn to much to pay such amount annually? It’s part of the innate wickedness of Nigerians. |

hassinho707: You are the one who is clearly confused here.
Let me educate you.
No body is talking of a woman being or not being under the authority of a man here. You are the one who has come out with that one.
This is where I even support this matter. Take for example, a woman who got married before her NYSC and wants her husband's name on her NYSC certificate, and later, she's no longer with that her husband maybe do to divorce or death, and maybe she now happened to marry another man.
What name do you think should be on the NYSC certificate after marrying a another husband?
A woman can marry more than one husband in her life time, and do you think NYSC would have that time to be changing the names on her certificate? NO, but her father will always remain her father whether dead or alive.
Do you understand now? Okay. |

gaskiyamagana: Hope you are not saying NYSC took the decision to propagate Islam. Meanwhile, to say "... rejecting practices that are inconsistent with justice, logic, and faith." is inappropriate, if not incorrect. Its good for woman to retain her root, the root she now join is insignificant in her life or the struggle and the sufferness of the husband on her should remain unnoticed? Like do you get? The write up really get comma. |
Islam › Re: NYSC & the prohibition Of Women Changing Their Father's Name To Their Spouse by Kimo21(m): 12:10pm On Dec 13, 2024 |
Lukgaf: The recent memo by the NYSC, which states that married women are no longer mandated to change their father’s name to their husband’s name, is a commendable step in the right direction.
This decision not only upholds individuality but also aligns with Islamic principles that have always emphasized the importance of maintaining one’s lineage and identity.
In Islam, a woman is identified by her father’s name, not by her husband’s. Allah says in the Qur'an:
"Call them (adopted sons) by (the names of) their fathers, that is more just with Allah. [Al-Ahzab 33:5]
This verse underlines the significance of preserving one’s lineage, a principle that extends to naming conventions. The practice of women adopting their husband’s surname is rooted in cultural influences that are foreign to Islamic teachings and has no basis in Shari`ah.
A woman’s identity remains tied to her lineage, not her marital status. Taking a husband’s name as if she becomes part of his lineage creates confusion, disregards her connection to her family, and contradicts the principles of justice and clarity that Islam advocates. It also raises practical issues—what happens if she remarries after a divorce or the death of her husband? Should her identity keep shifting with each marriage? Such practices not only undermine the significance of her lineage but also complicate matters of inheritance, mahram relationships, and other rulings tied to her father’s name.
As Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd (may Allah have mercy on him) eloquently said, "Calling a person by his father’s name is more appropriate for knowing who is who and telling people apart."
This reflects both the wisdom and beauty of Islamic teachings, which safeguard lineage and personal identity.
The decision by NYSC is a move toward preserving the individuality of women and respecting their roots. It reminds us of the importance of maintaining our values and rejecting practices that are inconsistent with justice, logic, and faith.
May Allah guide us all to do what is right and protect our identities in this world and the Hereafter. @bolded, If it will create confusion why marry in the first place? If you’re not ready to be under the authority of your husband stay in your father’s house. Once you marry you are now under the authority of your husband. But who am I to advise a confused set of people. |
