The police in Lagos have arrested a gambler, Yakubu Bashir, for alleged fraud at the Bendel Inn on Ipodo Road, Ikeja, Lagos.

Bashir was picked up for his inability to pay for drinks and food worth N145,000.

Bashir had gone to the hotel on Wednesday with his friends to celebrate winning a sports bet.



He was said to have won N36,000.

He reportedly ordered assorted drinks and food for himself, his friends and other people in the bar, with a promise to pay the bills.

It was gathered that after the drinking and merriment, the manager, Alaba, approached Bashir, telling him that his bill was N145,000.

Trouble, however, started when the suspect said he had only N36,000 and begged that he should be allowed to pay the balance in installment.

Our correspondent learnt that in the ensuing altercation, Bashir was detained, while the manager reported the case at the Ikeja Police Division, leading to his arrest.

“I am an NCE holder and work as a security guard in a hotel. On December 6, I placed a sports bet and won N36,000. Out of happiness, I went to the bar with my friends to celebrate my breakthrough. The money was in my bank account. I wanted to withdraw it the following morning because we wanted to pass the night at the bar. I explained to a waiter that I would give him N36,000 and pay him up by January, but he refused,” the 26-year-old suspect reportedly told the police.

A police prosecutor, Inspector Benedict Aigbokhan, brought Bashir before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court on two counts of conduct likely to cause breach of the peace and fraud.

The charges read, “That you, Yakubu Bashir, on December 7, 2016, at about 1.10am at Bendel Inn on Ipodo Road, Ikeja, Lagos, in the Ikeja Magisterial District, did conduct yourself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by ordering for assorted drinks and food for your friends worth N145,000 and refusing to pay, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 166 of the Criminal Law, No. 11, Vol.44, Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.

“That you, on the same date, time and place, in the aforesaid magisterial district, did fraudulently collect assorted drinks and food valued at N145,000 promising to pay, knowing same to be false, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 312 of the Criminal Law, No 11, Vol.44, Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.”

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty before the presiding magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Akokhia, and was granted bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned till January 25, 2017.

THE Department of State Services has arraigned three persons before a Magistrate’s Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for the killing of an employee of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Miss Sophia Horsefall.

The suspects were said to have committed the offence on November 8, 2016, at Rumukparale in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

They were arraigned on three counts bordering on murder.



The defendants, who were identified as Sotonye Martin, Innocent Oluche and Wachukwu Ugochuckwu, were accused of stabbing their victim to death with a jackknife.

The counsel for the DSS, Mr. C.S. Eze, said Martin (first defendant) lured and killed Horsefall at the residence of Oluche, the second defendant in the matter.

Eze told the court that the victim’s corpse was buried in a shallow grave, adding that Martin and Oluche invited the third defendant (Ugochukwu), a spiritualist, to the shallow grave to perform some rituals and tie the spirit of the victim.

He added that the victim had an eight-year-old daughter before she was killed.

The charges read, “That you, Sotonye Martin, Innocent Oluche and Wachukwu Ugochukwu, on the 8th day of November 2016, at Rumukparale, in the Obio/Akpor LGA, within the jurisdiction of this court, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit: murder of Sophia Horsefall, a member of staff of the NDDC, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 324 of the Criminal Code, Law of Rivers State, 1999.

“That you, Innocent Oluche and Wachukwu Ugochukwu, on the 8th day of November 2016, at the place described above, did kill Sophia Horsefall, a member of staff of the NDDC, by stabbing her to death with a jackknife, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 316 and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Law of Rivers State, 1999.

“That you, Sotonye Martin, Innocent Oluche and Wachukwu Ugochukwu, on the date and at the place described above, abetted the murder of Sophia Horsefall, a member of staff of the NDDC, thereby commiting an offence contrary to Section 322 of the Criminal Code, Law of Rivers State, 1999.”

The defendants’ pleas were not taken.

The Chief Magistrate, F. Alikor, ordered that the accused be remanded in custody.

Explaining that the court had no jurisdiction over the matter, the chief magistrate directed that the case file be transferred to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions and adjourned the matter indefinitely.

Two suspected kidnappers and a security guard were shot dead as operatives from the Bauchi State Police Command stormed a kidnappers’ den in the Ganjuwa Local Government Area of the state.

Our correspondent gathered that a shootout occurred between the kidnappers and police operatives around 11am on Saturday when the patrol team and members of a private security firm, identified as Danja Security, invaded the hideout.

Two women, identified as Maryam Shu’aibu and Hauwa Karfe, who were taken hostage in the den, were said to have been freed by the operatives from the hideout located in Buzun Forest.



It was learnt that the hoodlums engaged the police operatives in an exchange of fire, during which two of the kidnappers were killed.

A member of Danja Security, identified as Mustapha Gali, was also shot dead by the kidnappers.

It was gathered that the police recovered one rifle, with beech no. 2016576, one magazine and 15 rounds of live ammunition from the den.

The acting Police Public Relations Officer, Bauchi State Police Command, SP Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the deaths, adding that the case was under investigation.

He said, “All the casualties and the rescued victims were taken to the General Hospital, Kafin Madaki, for medical attention. The two suspected kidnappers and the Danga Security member were certified dead by a medical doctor, while the rescued victims are in stable condition.”

The Lagos State Police Command says it has discovered a fake embassy operating in Lagos where many innocent members of the public had allegedly been defrauded.

It was gathered that policemen attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) had swooped on the ‘embassy’ and arrested two Chinese and two Nigerians.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the fake embassy was located at Golden Point and Suite on Duduyemi Street in Ejigbo, Lagos.



The RRS said the Chinese – Liu Honyang, 47; and Sun Xinai, 49 – and their Nigerian collaborators – Oriyomi Olawale, 47 and Desmond Chinedu, 25 – had been swindling Nigerians who had planned to travel out of the country.

It was learnt that the suspects issued mainly Trinidad and Tobago’s visas.

The RRS said the Trinidad and Tobago embassy in the country had confirmed the visas to be fakes, while disowning the two Chinese.

A RRS source told our correspondent that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, directed the squad to act on the intelligence reports received from some victims of the ‘embassy.’

He said, “Some RRS policemen had lodged in the hotel for nine days, watching and monitoring the activities of the suspects before their eventual arrest.”

Some people, who claimed to be victims of the fraud, stormed the RRS headquarters on Sunday to write their statements against the suspects.

One of the victims, Adekunle Adefuye, said he met them through one of their agents, one Dorcas Slyver.

He said, “She is a daughter to my brother’s pastor in Abeokuta, Ogun State. I told her about my intention and zeal to travel to the United States. She told me to come to Lagos that she could procure the American visa for me.

“On getting to Lagos, she took me to the Chinese and I was advised to travel to Trinidad and Tobago. They said I would secure employment with at least $3,000 salary.

“I paid a total sum of N1.3m in installment for the process, including visa processing and flight fare.”

He said he was arrested immediately he got to Trinidad and Tobago on October 19, 2016, by the country’s immigration officers for coming into the country with a fake visa.

“I was arrested with another Nigerian. We spent two days with the police. They treated us like criminals trying to enter the country illegally. We were deported on October 22, 2016, and arrived in Nigeria the following day,” he added.

Another victim, Rasheed Ololade, said he paid N1.3m.

“I was fortunate to escape being jailed in Trinidad and Tobago for coming into the country with fake documents.

“They beat me up and starved me for two days. I was lucky to have been deported,” he added.

Another victim, Friday Owah, said he just paid N600,000 before the arrest.

He said, “I was introduced to them by one man, Mr. Oscar. They promised to secure the visa for me within two weeks.”

Another victim, Lukmon Odeyemi, who claimed to be a footballer, said he parted with N125,000.

But Sun Xinai, the main suspect, said she was unaware that a stamped visa for Trinidad and Tobago was no longer tenable in the country.

However, a response to a letter written by the RRS to the High Commission of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, dated December 7, 2016, read in part, “…the mission can categorically confirm that the individual Sun Xinai, who is claiming to be an agent of this mission, is unknown to us.

“Furthermore, this mission does not use the services of an agent in any capacity whatsoever and has never done so in the past either.

“With regard to the authenticity of the attached visas, the mission can also categorically confirm that those visas were not issued at this High Commission and are clearly fraudulent.”

The letter was signed by one Garth Lamsee, the acting High Commissioner.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the police had launched a manhunt for other agents of the fake embassy.

“Members of the public should be wary of visa agents. Anyone who wishes to travel out of the country should direct their applications to the embassies,” she added.

She said the suspects had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba,for further investigation.

32yrs old Rosemere do Nascimento Silva had planned to surprise her fiancé Udirley Damasceno and 300 guests by swooping in to their reception in the outskirts of Sao Paulo in Brazil.
But in an horrendous twist of fate, the aircraft crashed en route to the venue, killing the bride-to-be, her brother, the pilot and a photographer who was six-months-pregnant.

Mr Damasceno was left waiting at the altar, unaware of what his fiancée was planning to do, or of the tragic consequences.

Police and air crash investigators are now trying to establish what caused the crash.

They are looking into reports that it might have hit a tree due to bad visibility with rain, fog, cloud.

"Brides have a dream and hers was to arrive by helicopter to her wedding without anyone knowing," Carlos Eduardo Batista, one of the organisers told Brazilian media Globo.

The accident was discovered when he realised the helicopter did not arrive at a nearby football field.

He made a phone call which confirmed it had taken off as planned.

They were later told a plane had crashed nearby but at first thought it was an unconnected incident.

The distraught bridegroom was told the news at the altar by the pastor and was said to have gone into total shock. The journey should have taken just 5 minutes, but she didn't make it.

Monday, with the delivery of four fighter aircraft to the Nigerian government by its Pakistani counterpart. This came ahead of 21 aircraft approved for procurement by President Muhammadu Buhari to boost the operations of the Nigerian Air Force.

The 21 war planes approved for procurement by the Buhari administration, which delivery are expected by the first quarter of next year, are four helicopters gunships, four medium airlift utility helicopters, three live attack aircraft and ten primary trainers.

The four Super Mushshak aircraft, said to be modernized for modern warfare, delivered to the Nigerian Air Force, yesterday, also arrived ahead of ten others which the Nigerian government asked the Asian country to manufacture and subsequently sell to it for use in the ongoing counter insurgency operations in the North East.

Sometimes, people throw hands because of how much they love their dog. This dude got into a fight because his dog was in danger. The fight was with a kangaroo. It was amazing and the dude who got into the tussle is the best.

The kangaroo was chilling out with the dog. It looked like it was a totally cool friendship between two members of the animal kingdom, but the dog’s owner was worried about a house pet and a non-domesticated mingling. So he jumped into action by running over to the kangaroo and the dog.

Our four-legged friend got away from the kangaroo, which then stood up on its back legs. At this point, time to throw down. The kangaroo hopped around while the dude got his hands up and prepared to fight. He threw a punch, a monstrous right hook that left the creature stunned. The kangaroo threw its hands up, the dude backed up, and the fight was over. One punch and it was over. The fight of a lifetime came to an abrupt end because the human threw a haymaker. It was wonderful.

Today, is the happiest day of my life as God saved me to dangers of snake bite. I went to a shop and the sun was hot, as i was coming to enter my car i nearly stepped on the big snake that was chasing a Lizard.

I quickly jumped up and the snake ran under one of the cars that was parked by the side.

I called the fire service men, they came and caught the snake and took it and release it into a forest nearby.


Please lets always be-careful and check your car underneaths and engines as they may sneak into such places to rest as.. most of the cars are parked outside.
