Lol. What have I written? I'm still learning at the feet of great writers like Larrysun, Ishilove, Redmosquito, Frank317 and the likes.

I'm pleased that you found my little gestures of support noteworthy. That shows how appreciative you are. The pleasure was mine of being here was purely mine. Thanks for the hug.
Hmmm, Humble VanTee. An attribute I'd attach to you for a long time to come.

Prologue

The day could have been the brightest in that year for the family save for the dull weather outside . The singular cause for a smile in the household. Their only daughter was getting married. She wasn't exactly a kid any longer. A twenty-four year old was very well an adult who could make valid decisions. Especially on obtaining a degree in Pharmacy from a renowned university. But that did little to get a smile on the face of the bride's mother. Her husband had died two weeks to the wedding as a result of sudden heart attack which he couldn't survive. They couldn't have called off the wedding then. At least the girl needed a source of joy in her life then.

" Mummy, the husband's family have arrived," Tomi, a short teenager and Deola's cousin told Adeola's mother as she peeked through the door to see the lady fully dressed and standing in front of the full length mirror.

She heaved and waved her off, " Alright. I would be out now," she told her and reached for her flat sandals. The one Tumise had sent to her from France two months before, when the wedding date was fixed. If only she had known Daddy Remi would have gone to the great beyond before he saw what should have been his happiest day. Marrying his favorite daughter off. She was the apple of her dad's eyes. The cynosure of every eye. Took after her father in every little aspect but they say man can only propose and the ultimate disposer of all things is the Almighty.

" E kaabo o," one could hear greetings downstairs as the groom's family trooped into the compound. They had brought two eighteen-seater buses with them alongside a few more cars for the ceremony which wasn't planned to be so expensive. It was a modest party to the core. The groom had been around since the previous night with his immediate younger brother and best friend. They had been around before the arrival of his parents which didn't seem like it went on well with the groom's mother.

She beckoned to her son on hearing a conversation about the couple going to the local registry earlier that morning and already signing the dotted lines,
" Tolu, you come here," she called him to the balcony at the back of the one-storey building that belonged to the bride's parents and where the wedding ceremony was also scheduled to take place.

" What is it, Mummy?" Tolu asked as he adjusted his traditional cap trying to get a good fit.

" Tolu, what am I hearing about a court marriage? Didn't we agree on just the regular ceremony? Why did you have to sign with her, Tolu?" She began questioning in a hushed tone to avoid being overheard by guests around.

" Mummy, it's no big deal. We went to court and did a regular thing. You guys were running late, so Gbenga and Tayo came with me and we just signed. Don't worry so much," he explained to her trying to get her to get off him. She could nag.

" I will worry, Tolulope," she raised her voice catching the attention of some around them including the bride's best friend who was about to call him in but paused just at the entrance to the balcony listening, " She is just another of these women. Only that she's pregnant. So why would you sign 'for better for worse' with her ehn?! What do you think you are doing, Tolu?" She nearly yelled at him notwithstanding the attention they were already getting.

" Mummy...." Tolu started trying to calm her and looking around. This woman was really going to get him in trouble someday.

" Okay, Waa ba mi ni be.....we would clear this later," she tapped her thumb and middle finger together and hissed before turning away.

Tolu sighed. This was the exact reason he never told her about the court registry. God knows what she would do now, he thought and watched her as she went to meet her guests with an all-smiling face. That was just how she was. A real chameleon.

So here I am again. Really didn't want to start but after a gamble for nearly two days now, I just decided to post it anyways.

It's a true life story though I plan on changing names of characters and some little details and any similitude in the characters to anyone is purely coincidental.

Still in my spirit of writing, I want to start something else. Turning away from my own zone and into literature sure seems fun cool

Actually, I've started already. Penning a true life story and giving a feel of what it is like to be in a family where domestic violence reigns supreme. Marital Vices is something I plan to start and hopefully end.

I would post it anytime now. So you guys are all welcome to join in for the ride smiley

Seriously speaking, when I first read I thought the OP is seeing things but the deja vu thing really hits me hard. Most times, I keep insisting that 'Yeah, I must have been here once' because of the sudden familiarity that overwhelms me at times.

As for the fear of dying of something particular, hehehe..... Just keep off an hospital's O.R. @ OP so you don't end up going through a time machine......

That's all I've got here.....

So after I finished posting, I felt the need to put down a short review.

Alright, so I started writing only because, well I was less busy and I was sure having fun writing this piece. I loved the main character and had a feeling of being able to relate to her even though she is only fictional.

I had been writing it with a pen in a note but when I got on Nairaland one day and took a quick gamble. I told myself, alright let's just post it. I could get a little help with corrections here and I'm glad I got that especially from Vantee, Repogirl and Larrysun.

Well, yeah I got a little sick of it after a while but here I am....
I've read a whole lot of Harlequin and watched a number of movies so that figures why I ended up writing in that line. I don't regret posting here even if turn out was less encouraging at times.

For y'all who stopped by....muah! Love you loads.

BTW, I plan on starting something else, more like real-life scenario this time around.

Epilogue

Sophia pulled the second drawer of the chest open and sneezed as the dust got in her nostrils, irritating her.

" Well, well...." She said to herself and picked the first book in the drawer. It was her diary.

Even though she had long abandoned the journal for near ten years now, she really had been hoping she would still find the journal there. She picked the pen attached to the journal and opened the diary. Laughing as she read through. She had started writing a journal when she was in S.S. 2 at secondary school mostly because all her classmates had one and she just wanted to start her own. Only she had nearly gotten addicted, writing every single important note she felt the need to pen down up until....

Sophia turned to the last page she had written and her eyes traveled down to the last line where she had written, ' I hate them so much. Michael, Dotun and Abigail. I want it all to end. I wish...' .

That had been then and now she felt a greater need to write her mind down. She shut the journal and walked out of the storage room into the master's bedroom of the villa.

She got the dust off the journal a little more and lay on the bed to write. Opening to the next empty page, she started,

' Dear diary, how long has it been? Almost ten years but here I am again and I'd like to let you catch up a little bit on what has been going on since.

I got married to Michael despite the odds and I'm sure you expected that also but hey, it was sure tough. I've had to live with the fact that my father in-law sees me as the sole reason for his son pulling away and treated me equally so. It took hell breaking loose for him to allow the marriage to take place. I had had a clean record in my career but forfeited that when the wealthy showed me what elements they were made of. I lost a huge case. Really big, I mean and the case was so open to the world that the accused was innocent and was supposed to get acquitted. My boss who is a senior advocate had left the case to me in trust and I lost it thanks to Michael's father.
I nearly did jail time for it since the family weren't just going let their child get executed because of a careless lawyer. Now, that was tough. It took my boss's trust in me as well as Michael's connections to the chief judge of the federation to help me out. I've had to forfeit my career since then and had to take Michael's suggestion to come down to California. I really have no idea what he was up to in Nigeria but the next thing I got was a call from his dad saying he didn't care anymore and, marry or whatever, he didn't care. Michael said that was his last shred of dignity left. I guess so.

My Temi would be ten soon. I hope to celebrate that birthday for her in Nigeria. She's becoming a really pretty girl and I'm happy to be her mum. Did I mention she has two younger brothers? Really naughty ones. Dimeji and Tomiwa. They are two pieces of work. It's just great their dad is there for them to bother. I hear them playing basketball right now. I'm not surprised since it's Michael's favorite game. He could very well be coaching a Michael Jordan in Tomiwa since that one loves the game so much.

I chat with Dammy on social media as often as possible. Miss her a lot since she was there when the going got tough. She is the exact definition of 'Mama Ibeji' with Michael and Michaela. I'm glad she's happily married. She always has been deserving of the best.

Bimbola is well......happy. She's my only sibling and I still love her even if she takes some crazy steps like going back to marry her boyfriend at school after almost tying the knots with someone else. Yeah, that's the crazy kind of sister I have.

Dad goes to Nigeria much more regularly these past years. He is even planning on going into partnership with Michael and setting up a world standard hospital there. I totally support that especially since my dad is so talented in his field.

And there is one thing I feel the need to add. That is my family's relationship with Abigail's. I have kept contact with Tunde since Abigail's demise. He has been a great father to his little boy, Ayo. He told me he was remarrying a nicer lady now and I'm happy he could find happiness again.

I haven't mentioned my ex, Peter. He got married and I am feeling so bad that I couldn't attend. Well, Michael made up for our absence and promoted Peter to Supervising Projects Manager in his mum's company. My Michael is really adorable, don't you think?

In all of this, all the hurdles, all the stops and breaks, we had losses. I lost my best friend,Michael lost his. His dad lost a chance of being grandfather to his son's children. And a number of losses I can't even begin counting right this minute.

Well, at the end of it all, I realized the one thing that couldn't be lost was the love I shared with Michael and everyone else around me. I can't repay evil with evil. An eye for an eye, they say ends up making the world go blind. Now, well I still want people to have their both eyes so that they could see how things ought to be and correct their mistakes.

Dear diary, today I hope would be the last I would write in you. I'm sort of glad it would be, no hard feelings.

As I drop my pen, my spirit is indeed joyful. I'm going to keep treading that part with Michael by my side and above all, with the Almighty keeping my feet stable.'

Sophia dropped the pen and sighed. She had really written a lot, more than she expected.

" Mum, Tomiwa is really getting on my nerves," Temi said as she opened the door.

'Now, we are back to earth,' Sophia muttered and shut the journal as her eyes quickly caught a scribble at the back, 'Eothen'. She rolled her eyes, trying to recollect when and why she had written that as she got off the bed.

Mike turned off the car stereo and ignition, " So here we are," he turned to Sophia who said nothing and opened the car door,

" Sophia, the silent treatment is so not nice. Just say whatever it is that's bothering you," Mike pleaded as he also got out of the car.

Still saying nothing, Sophia went to the car's bonnet and sat looking away with the wind blowing her hair around.

" Seriously, this is not cool, sweetheart," Mike continued and stood in front of her.

" Come on, sit," she tapped the space beside her to the left.

" Okay, so I take it you're angry or something," he told her and sat beside her on the car's bonnet.

" Good. You're really impressive, Michael. Is this part of bribery by bringing me here?" She asked him not taking her gaze off the sunset and trying to push her hair behind her ear.

" Maybe. I was actually planning to reserve a whole restaurant but knew you might not go along with that so this seemed easier. Just watching the sunset from a beach," he told her making her laugh,

" Because this was the last kind of date I went with you? Or you have firsthand knowledge that Sophia's one hobby is watching the sunset?" She asked still laughing and not taking her eyes away as the sun gradually disappeared behind the ocean.

" You could say so. It took me a while to figure it out in Minnesota but it did stick in my head since then,"

" It's gone now," Sophia observed getting more serious as the smile gradually faded from her lips.

Mike nodded, " I take it you heard about the company already. Sorry I couldn't get back to you that Saturday. I needed to get a lot of things sorted out before coming back to you. I'm sorry if I kept you in the dark all along," he apologized when Sophia finally looked at him.

" Peter was first to inform me and I did my little research. You really messed up, Michael," she told him as the breeze got colder.

" I had to. Wasn't fun going against daddy dearest," he admitted.

" So what now? Your dad would just watch? And your fiancee, Stella also?" She asked concerned.

" Ex-fiancee if you want to term that correctly. And, of course not. He would get to me in time. He won't exactly let me off after making him look like a fool in front of a board. I only have enough time to win the girl's heart again," he told her and Sophia nodded laughing,

" Yeah, you have a lot of work to do there," she told him.

Mike helped her with the hair she was struggling to keep in place and pushed it behind her ear, keeping his hand on her head,
"I'm not going to promise you 'happily ever after'. The term gets me nauseous," he said and they both laughed again, "But I could assure you that even if I'm made to kneel again, I would do that alone. I could guarantee you that I would never walk out on you like I did foolishly once. I could tell you that whenever my dad tries to put you down or anyone tries to put you away, I would be right there to grasp your hands as well as possible. I hope not to disappoint the trust I'm asking you to repose in me," he assured her.

Sophia was at first unable to say anything and just stared at him. She knew he could be so cute but no this awesome so she looked away quickly.

" So...nothing?" He asked her waving his palm in front of her eyes.

Sophia smiled back, " You just stay around, okay?" She simply said and placed her head on his shoulder as the moon came into full view and they looked to the ocean as it calmed and everywhere became dead silent.

" Did I tell you I never stopped loving you for one second?" Mike's voice broke into her thoughts as she put her forefinger to his lips,

" Shh... I've always known that, Michael," she gently answered and relapsed back into her thoughts. This was going to be a really long journey. Only she wasn't scared to tread with Michael being right there.

" That is really expensive, dear. I'm not Sophia's boyfriend. I'm just an architect who works under someone else," Daniel pointed out as Dammy pointed out a shoe from the catalogue she was going through on the laptop.

" Come on, don't be so stingy," Dammy cajoled him but only got a straight answer.

" We can't afford that," Daniel put in all seriousness.
" Whatever," she said and turned to the next page. The wedding was going to be in six weeks. Her father in law to-be couldn't spare more time and since he didn't bother with heads up, she had a short time to really get ready. Not that she hadn't been preparing since long ago. They were always going to get married, no matter how long it took. That was how much she was confident in Daniel.

" I'd get that," Daniel offered as the front door was tapped. Dammy was really excited after a while because of the wedding coming up. Looking at her now, he didn't regret his choice in a bride. She was almost everything he hoped for.

" Wow, Sophia. I didn't know you were coming," Daniel had to exclaim as he saw Sophia at the door with her daughter.

" It's a surprise. Congrats on your decision to get married finally, guys, " Sophia smiled and walked in.
Dammy put down the laptop and went to hug her, "Thanks, dear. How are you sweetheart and I am totally loving your cap," She said to Temi in admiration of the baseball cap that was nearly covering her face as she picked her up.

" Fine," the girl said eagerly and smiled back.

" Don't mind the cap. I was planning on stopping by the salon before coming here but for I don't know what reason, the salon is closed so we just have to stay with baseball caps for longer," Sophia said and went to sit.

" This kid is so cute. I hope you don't mind her being my little bride," Dammy requested as they all sat.

" Yeah, we were going to ask you that too," Daniel seconded her.

" Of course. She's you guys goddaughter anyways so why not?" Sophia gave her word immediately.

" Well, that aside. Can your boyfriend spare a Lamborghini or something for the conveyance of the bride?" Dammy added jokingly.

" Hmmm, let me talk to him about that. He wouldn't dare say no," Sophia told her sitting back in the sofa.

" No, I was just kidding. I'm glad enough to be getting married before you," Dammy smiled at her fiance who shook his head and got up.

" Well, I have to excuse you ladies. I need to meet this uncle of mine who could take offence if I do not present the wedding I.V. to him personally," Daniel told them and picked up his car keys on the table.

" You won't take long?" Dammy asked him.
" Come on, Sophia could keep you company for a while. And no, I won't take long," he told her and kissed her cheek before leaving.

" Now that is adorable," Sophia had to say as Daniel walked out.

" Well...." Dammy shrugged, " Come help me with choosing the best out of these options here," Dammy requested pulling the laptop over.

" Alright, I sure could help," Sophia went to sit beside her leaving Temi to sit between them both though she couldn't exactly decipher whatever was on the screen in front of her.

" And you are sure you would rather Bimbola was my chief bridesmaid?" Dammy asked again. She had asked Sophia over the phone to be the chief bridesmaid but she had said she preferred her kid sister in the dress.

" You know she is cuter," Sophia joked.

" Yeah, right. Or you are planning a getaway?" Dammy raised her eyes.

" You could say so," Sophia pulled the laptop away from her friend.

Dammy cleared her throat and hesitated a little. Unsure of what reply she would get, " I heard about Abigail and I just lost words. How are you holding up? Your dad was around for the case, right?" She asked seeing Sophia wasn't ready to touch the topic.

Sophia kept staring at the laptop screen, " I only wished a lot had been different. But she just.....left," Sophia tried hard to hold her tears back in. No matter how bad Abigail was to her, they had been friends once. An important note to take. She hated her but still wished they had fought it out. Clawed at each other or something but with her being gone, that part of Sophia's life felt void. A gap nothing could fill up, " Let's not talk about that, please," Sophia pleaded.

Dammy nodded. It wasn't any use discussing what couldn't be fixed, she concurred, " So Michael hasn't called you since he left last Saturday? It's past two weeks now," Dammy observed as she changed the subject.

" He sent a text. Told me he would be busy for a while and about to leave for Hong Kong. Asked me to give his love to his daughter. That's all," Sophia told her friend. Glad the topic was changed.

" Hmmm, I wonder how you plan on sharing his love with Temi," Dammy teased and finally got Sophia smiling.

" I could occasionally get jealous," Sophia replied and looked at her daughter beside her who tried standing in the sofa as she caught her and put her across her thighs, " And he knows what he's in for when he gets back. He's got a lot of explaining to do," Sophia told her friend as she scrolled through pointing out nice shoe choices to Dammy.

Chapter 30

Final chapter

" It's been almost eight hours. I'm beginning to get worried," Sophia observed and stood up from the chair.

" I'm sure your father is doing his best," Tunde told her.
In the short time frame he had sat with her, he had been able to connect with her. She was really different from his own wife. There were a lot of striking variations between them that he kept wondering how they ever got along.

" I know my dad would do that. I'm only anxious," she said and paced.

After another almost three hours of anxiety, she saw her father come out of one of the theater rooms of the hospital from the lit up passage way since it was already dark. Night had fallen for over six hours already.

Sophia sighed and approached him as he kept walking to the doctor's office,
" That sure took long," she tried hiding her anxiety and walked with him.

Dr. Ayoola stopped shortly in his steps seeing his daughter was worried. No use keeping her in the dark, " Well, Sophia, I do not have good news for you. I'm so sorry but we couldn't do anymore than just save the baby. She gave up and I am so sorry but we did try. Only, she got out of comma for something less than five minutes, made some mutterings and gave up the struggle. I'm sorry, sweetheart and I'm sorry, Tunde," he let out as Sophia staggered back.

This wasn't right. Abigail wasn't meant to just leave this way. They still had a lot to fight and talk about. She hadn't asked her what made her commit unwarranted acts against her. Abigail couldn't be....dead. No! Sophia couldn't stifle the tears that rushed to her face. She put her hand to her mouth and choked on the tears.

Tunde was not so surprised but he never really wanted his wife to die either. She had her own share of evils but who didn't?

" It's a boy, sir," the smart nurse handed the infant to its father. The baby didn't even blink and just stared at his dad's eyes. Tunde took the child from her and shrank back to the wall. This was their baby. The one she didn't bother living to see.

"I'm still trying to decipher what she was saying at the last moment. She was struggling to get the words across but none of us could hear. We were too busy trying to save her life," Sophia's dad explained.

Abigail's own doctor who was a specialist at the hospital and had also gone into operation room with him spoke now, " She never cared about antenatal. Didn't bother with tests. I always wondered what else could engulf an expectant mother other than her pregnant condition." He shook his head and led the way into his office.

Dr. Ayoola hesitated looking at his daughter and how she was taking the news of the death of her childhood friend.
No matter what, they shared something once and a sad ending was not deserved. He pulled her to himself and patted her back, " It's okay, sweetheart," he consoled her as she choked on her tears.
