Data Center & Server Room Environmental Monitoring System

Apart from virus, spyware and network threats, the factors that adversely affect business operation are temperature, humidity, airflows, smoke,
water leak and electricity. The elements have detrimental effect on the equipment and make them sluggish, which ultimately results in the poor performance of business. With this in mind, data center environmental monitoring system seems to have very crucial role in keeping an eye on network closets, server rooms and enterprise level data center. In order to know if there is any problem happening with the server or data center, it is very important to configure your system with features such as alert notifications to received emails, SMS, SNMP or voice call alarms to notify when something goes wrong.

Various types of sensors can be used to provide early warning of trouble from these threats (i.e. temperature, water leak, Smoke, airflow, Power and many more). Understanding the technique for monitoring distributed physical threats enables the IT administrator to fill critical gaps in overall data-center security and keep physical security aligned with changing data-center infrastructure and availability goals.
What is an Environmental Monitoring System?

Environmental Monitoring Systems give you real time visibility of your Data Center or Server Room environment and infrastructure. Not only can you know what the current state of your environment is, you can also go through historical data to find trends and diagnose problems.
In addition environment monitoring systems also deliver real time alerting. Server room environments are highly sensitive. Heightened temperature or humidity or water ingress are serious issues requiring immediate remediation. Environment monitors can alert you to problems proactively helping you to minimize system downtime. Unexpected system downtime is incredibly costly to a data center.

INTELLIGENT TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY MONITORING FOR DATA CENTER & SERVER ROOM

Sensor Notifications & Alert
An essential part of any server room monitoring system is accurate temperature and humidity monitoring. High temperatures can lead to system failure, unwanted downtime and costly repairs. AKCP platforms help to avoid these costly errors with easy to configure, cost effective systems that are ready to run, right out of the box.

Events that lead to disaster can be used to proactively alert IT staff to maintain equipment correctly or to take corrective action.
When events occur, any this intelligent Monitoring system from the central Server can be configured to send a range of customization notifications alert. Include the following:
• SNMP Traps
• Emails
• SMS using optional 3G Modems
• Telephone Calls
• Audio Alerts
• Relay Switching
• Siren Strobe Alarms and many more…

All intelligent sensors use a standard RJ45 network connector and CAT5 cabling. Custom sensor cable lengths can be specified when ordering or, for advanced installations, can be extended to the required length on-site.
Use the embedded sensor configuration web interface or AKCP’s DCIM Software, AKCess Pro Server to configure the temperature sensor. Set a range of sensor thresholds to use with sensor notification wizards. Features such as “Continuous Time” avoid multiple notifications when temperature fluctuates rapidly between threshold set-points.

Temperature Sensor
Monitoring air temperature is essential in any area with IT equipment. It is particularly important to monitor air temperature in rooms, racks, and directly around the equipment. The common method of achieving this is by using temperature sensors. If air temperature is not monitored, it can lead to equipment failure or a reduction in the equipment lifespan. This is caused by air temperatures above equipment specifications and frequent, drastic temperature changes.

An optimal environmental monitoring strategy includes multiple temperature sensors. These should be placed on top, middle, and bottom of individual racks to measure the heat being generated by equipment, and at the air conditioning system’s intake and discharge vents, to measure efficiency. Probes should also be placed around critical devices, because the temperature inside a rack-mounted device could be as much as 20 degrees higher than the surrounding area. A probe near the room’s thermostat can help monitor what the thermostat is ‘seeing’ as it controls the air conditioner.

Humidity Sensor
High humidity may lead to corrosion on electronic components and low humidity levels may cause issues with static electricity. Humidity must be monitored at the room and rack level. The focus must be on the relative humidity at specific operating temperatures - not humidity level general. This is archived by using humidity sensor, if there is too little humidity, equipment failure can be caused by static electricity buildup. If there is too much humidity, condensation can cause equipment failure and create and unsafe working environment for personnel

Airflow Sensor
The airflow sensor is really designed to sense the presence of air, not to measure the amount of airflow. The Airflow Sensor is a device that registers airflow in areas where consistent flow is needed; for example, in cabinets and racks where the consistent operation of a fan is critical to the operational safety of electronic equipment.

The Airflow sensor is placed in the air stream, where the user can monitor the status and the amount of flowing air. It is best used to send an alert in the case of a fan, or in your case, AC failure.
Make sure air is flowing through the racks in addition to monitoring A/C vent intake and outtakes.

Water Leak Sensor
Moisture and humidity sensors should monitor for leaks inside cooling equipment, potential leaks that come from nearby pipes, or water caused by a flood or disaster. Water sensors should be placed at the lowest point (wherever water would tend to puddle) on the floor, and underneath any pipe junctions. Air-conditioning condensation trays should also be equipped with sensors to detect overflow.

Voltage Sensor
Voltage sensors detect presence or the absence of line voltage. Identify the frequency of brown outs for measuring uninterruptable power supplies and service provider performance.

Smoke and Fire
All data centers already have basic smoke and fire detection monitoring because it is required to meet local building code. The codes are government by specific legal and safety regulations. Unfortunately, the legally required smoke and fire detection monitoring in data center is not enough. Supplementary smoke sensors strategically placed near all operating IT equipment is critical to preventing electrical and material fires. Unmonitored fire causes equipment failures as well as a loss of assets and data.

Power Sensor
Electrical failures can cause air-conditioning equipment to shut down even while an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) ensures that servers stay up and running a sure recipe for overheating a server room in short order. The best approach is to monitor current coming into the data center, and arrange for an orderly shutdown of IT equipment in case power is knocked out. The hour or two of downtime is far preferable to the widespread device failures that would result from an overheating condition.

Monitor CRAC Water Leaks.
Monitor air conditioner water leaks in server rooms. Water leaks can lead to system failures and unwanted downtime. Use sensor notifications to detect water leaks in small, medium or large areas, Combine with temperature, air flow and dry contact status monitoring to collect real time computer room air conditioner CRAC status.

Sensor Alerts and Notifications can be sent when water has been detected. If for some reason a cable becomes dislodged or damaged, an error status will alert server room maintained personnel to the fault.

AKCP manufacture a range of water leak detection sensors for use in computer rooms, server rooms and large scale data centers. AKCP sensors can be placed on a number of surfaces and mounted in raised floor air conditioning ducts. For self-contained rack air conditioning units, rope detection sensors are an invaluable asset in protecting against localized water leaks. There are three types of water detection sensor provided

Smoke Sensor
Smoke alarms can trigger power shutdowns. Also, they’re usually not tied to an alerting system that contacts IT personnel. Alarms may be noticed by facilities managers—or the local fire department—but the maintenance of sensitive server equipment is not their top priority. Here, the best approach is to wire the smoke alarms directly into the climate monitoring and alerting system, essentially extending the functionality of the climate sensors to the smoke alarm.

Doors Sensor
Dry-contact sensors that detect the opening and closing of a door should be installed at the room entry points and on the doors of server and UPS cabinets. On a busy day, these sensors can send alerts numerous times and present a time-consuming irritation, but managers can configure alerts to account for weekday vs. weekend operations, work hours vs. overnights, and other factors to help reduce the number of alerts sent and pinpoint unusual activities.

Video Surveillance
Real-time surveillance of sensitive areas in the data center and tie into the Web-based console, so administrators can get a first-hand look at the environment wherever they may be.
Power Consumption & Switching

Liquid Leak
One of the most difficult disperse physical threats in a data center to monitor is liquid leaks. The leaks are most likely to be either water or coolant. This can damage floors, cabling, and equipment. It can also be an indication of CRAC, HVAC problems. The best way to monitor for leaks includes; rope leak sensors and spot leak sensors.

These lesser known threats can cause just as much downtime as the more common threats. A minimum level of monitoring for physical threats is never adequate for identifying and preventing dispersed physical threats in a data center. The best data centers utilize a variety of additional sensors and monitoring technique to protect themselves from these threats. Since physical threats are distributed throughout the data center, the local of sensor will vary based upon the room layout and equipment positioning.

Power Monitoring Sensor
Determine how much power a specific device or power strip is consuming to help keep an eye on overall energy usage and prevent overloading of power circuit breakers. Turn outlets on or off on alarm or manually through the web-based GUI.

Vibration Detect Sensor
Vibration Detect Sensor is a normally closed input switch that will detect when there is vibration, or a window about to be broken. It can be connected to both the Central Monitoring Probe base units and then linked to notification alerts.

This sensor is designed for protecting against forced entry by hammer, saw, crowbar etc… through walls, ceilings, windows, safes, cabinets, etc… It will initiate an alarm when a vibration from a non-desirable force strikes the protected surface. A built-in tamper switch is independent from the circuit of the vibration detector for your convenience.

The vibration-Detect sensor can be connected to the sensorProbe and securityProbe units via the RJ-45 dry contact sensors. Or it can be directly connected to the dry contact inputs on the sensorProbe8-X20, sensorProbe8-X60, securityProbeX-20 and securityProbe-X60 units allowing security protection for many windows using only a single base unit.

Alerts & Notifications
AKCP provide a wide range of notifications, not limited to Email, SNMP-Traps, Automated Telephone Calls and SMS messages (when using AKCP’s optional USB or Internal 3G Modems). Additional automation can be performed such as shutting down one CRAC unit and stabilizing server room temperatures with another CRAC system until maintenance personnel can resolve the water leak. Add siren strobe alarms to draw immediate attention to water detected within mission critical areas of a data center

Fuel and Generator Monitoring
Monitoring fuel level in storage tanks for backup power generators is critical, not only to ensure smooth operation and power constant power for the Data Center or BTS site, but increasingly fuel level monitoring is being used to protect the fuel asset.

AKCP’s monitoring system uses an ultrasonic fuel level sensor on fuel tanks to accurately determine current fuel level and graph usage over time. This could be compared to generator power run time determined from power monitoring sensors to check fuel usage against generator time.
Detect Unauthorized Fuel Usage, Leaks and Levels.

Cell tower locations often have unattended fuel stores on site to power emergency backup generators. Fuel storage tanks often fall victim to fuel theft or unauthorized fuel usage costing cell tower management companies substantial amounts of money as well as the possibility of no backup power being available.

With AKCP you can monitor fuel usage at multiple locations and receive alerts when sudden fuel drops are detected. This allows you to coordinate with site security personnel for immediate inspection.

Detect theft using Rate of Change
AKCP’s fuel theft detection detects the “rate of change” in the physical fuel level over a period of 1 to 20 minutes. Detection can be detected in both rising and falling fuel levels to track refills or fuel theft scenarios.

By linking this alerting feature to one of 15 notification types you can receive an SMS, E-Mail or SNMP Alert to allow your security personnel to respond to the situation appropriately by sounding alarms, triggering deterrent devices via relay or placing an automatic call to local police stations in the area.

Notifications can be set up and configured on the central server application, the local AKCP hardware device or both.
The Control Server Software can be used to control, map, record video and generate notifications from all of your remote fuel sites. Anywhere in the world.

Why Is Data Center Thermal Management Important?,

Data center cooling, humidity control, temperature control, thermal management
With the large amounts of data every company has to store, it is essential for them to keep their data safe and within reach. The problem with great amounts of data is the fact that not all the data is equally important; some data is more frequently used than other data, for example. What happens is that data that is not needed for a long period of time easily gets lost, and when it is needed again, it is impossible to track it down. Therefore, it can be seen why company owners had no other option but to find an efficient solution when it comes to keeping their precious data safe. In that respect, data centers have become widespread, as they have proven to be an excellent method for storing data and keeping it safe.

First off, it needs to be said that data centers are facilities commonly referred to as computer rooms, where a company keeps all of their computer equipment. Here is where all the storage and security devices are located, which is why there are certain rules in regard to maintaining data centers properly. One of the most important rules to follow regarding data centers is data center cooling.

Data Center Cooling
Data centers need to maintain a certain temperature in order for all the devices in them to be safe. Since the servers in the data center have to function round the clock, they draw a lot of power for their operation. This leads to heating up of the systems and the temperature of the systems have to be regulated constantly. This is best done by using air conditioning, as by doing so it is possible to control the temperature and humidity of the air in the room. Humidity control is important to ensure that water does not condense on internal circuits during high humidity conditions and does not lead to static discharge in low humidity conditions.

According to regulations, the temperature in a data center should not exceed 24 °C (75°F) and it should be kept above 16°C (61°F), which is why data center cooling is extremely important. Temperatures in data centers can easily rise, and this can cause damage to devices that are located there. Therefore, the issue of data center cooling should not be neglected, as this will help data centers run properly, and more importantly, without any malfunctions.

Key Features
• Report fuel usage of individual employees at each remote fuel site.
• Allocate fuel to an employee at a remote fuel site.
• Alert when fuel levels are low.
• Flexible installation using the SAE5 Standard Mounting pattern.
• High return on investment.
• Ultra-Low Power Consumption.
• Add Real Time or event based video recording for complete piece of mind.
• Create detailed fuel consumption reports.
• Accurate Ultrasonic Sensors report a continuous fuel level in each tank.
• Monitor fuel leaks under the tank with an AKCP Fuel Sensor.

Monitor Engine Run time
Compare fuel usage against generator run times for in-depth analysis of fuel consumption and usage. Send alerts to employees to inform them when the fuel tank is due to be refilled.

• Engine start / stop,
• Oil temperature,
• Pressure,
• Fault codes and warnings,
• Engine RPM’s,
• Engine runtime,
• Coolant temperatures,
• Fuel flow rates,
• Total fuel used,
• Total KWH and much more…

This Sensor also integrates with legacy generator sets using dry contact sensors, 4-20mAmp Sensors and Isolated Digital Voltmeters.

SERVER ROOM & DATA CENTER ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING SYSTEMS

This is what every IT, Telecoms, Bank and corporate organization are use to protect their data center & server room
