Prologue

Segun clutched his sleek blood soaked sword as he hid in the bushes and stared at the night sky. Tears welled in eyes as he replayed the horrific memory in his mind of how his partners were slaughtered by some new different monster.
He remembered their screams. Their fear. Their hopelessness. His cowardice.
He could no longer hold back the tears and they rushed in streams. The two years he had spent hunting things like that, all of that experience seemed like nothing in the face of that... that... demon. There was no other word for it.
"Forgive me, Tola and Yeni," he muttered in between sobs, "I will make..."
He stopped talking as he heard a deep growling sound.
It had found him. He knew it.
He slowly stood up from his hiding place, still tightly clutching his sword. He just as slowly turned, to behold the most fearsome monster he had ever imagined in his life.
Segun's knees felt weak as he beheld the demon. A black, muscled lion with a red mane. The irises of it's eyes were a bright orange. It was as large as an elephant but those were not the features that frightened Segun. It was the creature's canine teeth coloured red with blood.
The blood of his partners.
"Yeni, Tola," Segun whispered, "I'll be meeting you soon."
And with a yell, he charged at the demon.
