Education / (AAU): 13th General Conference, How Graduates Can Get Jobs, By Vcs. by koolnd: 2:23pm On Jun 07, 2013
Graduate unemployment is no longer a Nigerian but a continental problem.

Vice-Chancellors, who gathered in Libreville, Gabon, for the 13th General Conference of the Association of African Universities (AAU), discussed the way out, reports KOFOWOROLA BELO-OSAGIE.

Who is to blame for graduate unemployment. This poser took vice-chancellors (VCs), deputy vice-chancellors (DVCs), other representatives of universities, governments, funding and research agencies four days to answer at the 13th General Conference of the Association of African Universities (AAU) held in Libreville, Gabon, last week.

Under the theme: Transforming African higher education for graduate employability and socio-economic development, the participants wondered whether the universities were at fault; whether their curricula were inappropriate. They also examined the government’s role in providing jobs and evolving policies that promote economic activities, which in turn, create jobs. They discussed the role of public/private partnership; and considered how graduates could be taught to become self employed.

Prof Bruno Bekolo Ebe, Recteur, University de Douala, Cameroon, said during one of the group discussions that he could not understand why doctors and engineers would be roaming without jobs when hospitals in his country lacked sufficient doctors. Was this a problem of the curriculum?

“I want to give examples and see if it is a problem of curricula. In my country, there is a shortage of doctors because we don’t train enough. Yet you find doctors without jobs. We also do not train enough engineers, pharmacists, nurses, but you find them roaming the streets,” he said.

In interviews with The Nation, many did not agree that the curricula in most African universities were inferior and responsible for producing graduates without relevant skills to survive in the labour market. Rather, they highlighted factors they said were responsible for graduates spending three to five years in the university but fail to get jobs after graduation.

These factors include dwindling spaces in the labour market due to poor economy, poor infrastructure, and preference for paid employment rather than creating jobs; politics and others.

Prof Arinola Sanya, DVC (Administration), University of Ibadan (UI), does not think the curriculum is a major problem. She said many African graduates who get an opportunity to travel abroad get competitive jobs and do well. She attributed the problem to politicization of employment by the government, such that only those with influence get available jobs.

She said: “Talking from my own experience at the UI, I will not say that our graduates are not good. When you conduct interviews, you find it difficult choosing the best out of the whole lot, because they are all very good. The problem is not with our curriculum. Of course, we need to review the curriculum regularly to accommodate changing trends. But I think the issue in Nigeria is that everything is politicized, including employment. So, it is not that our graduates are unemployable; but I think if you are not well connected, you will not get employed.

“I am of the feeling that the unemployment in Nigeria, the figure we are quoting, is not very accurate. It is true that a lot of ministries/parastatals have frozen appointments. That is publicly; but privately, jobs are given out to those who have the connection. And if you look properly, those ones have a previous job. They are just changing from one job to a better one. And that will not affect the percentage of the unemployed. Government should hands off politicizing everything.”

VC of Ajayi Crowther University in Oyo State Prof Timothy Jaiyeoba said the problem was now prominent because of the poor economy of most African states. He said industries were not doing as well as they used to do, thereby reducing job opportunities.

“In some places it is not as if the graduates are not good. It is just that the industries are not employing as many as they would have done in the past because of the economic situation. Many of them don’t produce at maximum level, some because of power situation. They use generator and so on so there is a limit to what they are producing. You see that they do not need these graduates fully. Most of these industries too import their products from abroad. Which means the employment of those who produce these goods are also outside Nigeria,” he said.

Sokoto State University VC, Prof Nuhu Yaqub, blames the government for the poor economy that has reduced the number of available jobs. The government had not helped businesses to thrive, he said because of poor infrastructure which increase the operating cost of businesses and makes them unprofitable. He added that non-diversification of the economy was also responsible for the problem.

He said: “There is also the incapacity of the state to provide infrastructure. There is what is now generally referred to as infrastructural deficiencies – no light, no roads, no water. Invariably this also has repercussions on productivity and employment. In fact, it has also led to a situation whereby you have a situation of underemployment.

Let me give you an example of myself. I wake up at midnight and I want to work on a paper to present for a conference and I discover there is no light. There is nothing I can do. I am employed; prepared to work; the facilities that will make me do my work to an optimal level are not there. So there is also the phenomenon of underemployment in most African states.

“So, I think, therefore, that when we are talking about how universities could be geared to produce graduates that would be employed, we have to take these factors into consideration. The nature of the African states, the nature of the economy the African states are also operating, and, of course, the other dimensions – the nature of governance itself – you discover that there is so much corruption in Africa.”

While many VC complained that government wasn’t doing enough, Great Zimbabwe University, VC Prof Rungano J. Zvobgo, blamed the universities for not preparing graduates for the job market. He said universities failed to be innovative with their curricula; university-industry linkages, and help students gain entrepreneurial skills to start businesses.

He said yearly, his university succeeds in getting 80 per cent of its students jobs even before graduation through its one-year job placement scheme. He advised the universities to prepare students to create jobs rather than seek employment.

“It is not enough for VCs to prepare students to graduate; they must also prepare students for the world of work. The public/private sectors don’t have sufficient jobs for all our students who graduate every year. What we have to do is to ensure that we have prepared our students with enough skills for them to be able to create employment for themselves and for others. And I gave the example of Zimbabwe where at my university, in the third year every student goes on what we call work-related learning.

“This is a year during which a student is engaged in a place of employment related to his or her programme. The purpose of this is that the student would begin to learn how to apply the knowledge he/she acquired in the classroom on the work bench in the relevant area of study. This is useful because it is true that the employer begins to identify your strength and weaknesses. And if the student shows sufficient capacity to translate what he/she learnt in the classroom on the work bench, it has happened that a number of students in that category gets offers of employment before they come back to the university for their final year. It is also useful because some of the students, particularly the good, hardworking ones, are able to demonstrate that university education is not all about getting a degree. It about how you are going to apply is that degree to go to the world outside for you to be able to survive.”

Prof Charles Nherera, VC, Women University in Africa, Zimbabwe, said attempts by VCs to blame government would be shooting themselves in the foot as they produce those who run the government.

“I want us to take the blame. I want us to think that employ-ability must expand to creating the employment ourselves. When we blame the government, politicians, infrastructure, we blame ourselves because we are the ones producing the people that create the problems,” he said.

He added that his university has also been able to achieve a high employment rate of its products because of partnership with the alumni who help with placements. He advised others to adopt this model.

“We have partnered with our alumni association in this regard. We inform them of students that need placement and they help fix them in places. As a result almost all our students get jobs shortly after graduation,” he said.

Though the university has a role to play in graduate employ-ability, VC of the University of Ghana, Legion, Prof Ernest Aryeetey submitted that university administrators are not to blame for all the problems in the system. He said there was a limit to what they could do from their offices in the universities.

“It will be a shame if VCs think we can solve all the problems of our countries. There are things we can do and cannot do. If there are no markets, the people we train cannot get jobs.

There are some responsibilities we can tackle. Our focus is on the curriculum. Every university has responsibilities to ensure the curriculum is relevant to the needs of the society,” he said.

How can universities get robust curricula for their programmes, it is by involving the stakeholders on the review of the curricula regularly, says Prof Ibrahim Kolo, VC, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State.

“We should state the difference between unemployment and unemployability. There is no way you cnat tie the question of unemployability to the curriculum. Every other person in the larger society should be concerned about this problem.

We should get stakeholders of university education – parents, corporate organizations, industry, to participate to put the infrastructure and curriculum we require to link our students with the industry in place,” he said.

Education / Important Notice To All UNN Aspirants by koolnd: 1:56pm On Apr 08, 2013
NOTE: This write up was not made, in any way, to freak or scare you; on the contrary, it is meant to adequately prepare you for the big task ahead. So, put your mind at rest and follow these simple guidelines in order to give you leverage even as you achieve success in up-coming UNN Post UTME. Besides, no undergraduate within the University of Nigeria has a better head than you do. Now, let’s roll!
First of all, let me give you a brief info about the University. The University of Nigeria, commonly referred to as UNN, is a federal university located at Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria. Founded in 1955 and formally opened on October 7, 1960, the University of Nigeria has four campuses – Nsukka, Enugu and Ituku-Ozalla – located in Enugu State and one in Aba, Abia State, Nigeria. The main campus of the University is located on 871 hectares of hilly savannah in the town of Nsukka, about eighty kilometers north of Enugu, and enjoys a very pleasant and healthy climate. The University, with a motto ‘To restore the dignity of man’ has been a very successful ivory tower, and has produced important personalities in elevated positions in Nigeria. The likes of Chinua Achebe, Dora Akunyili, Chimanda Adichie amongst others are alumnus of this great institution. Before I digress, let’s get to the main points;

1) Leave For Nsukka In Time:
I mean in time, not on time, I hope you know the difference from your Use of English. It’s important you be in the School at least two days before the exam especially for those coming from far places like Lagos. As a result of the mammoth crowd coming for this exam, there is bound to be heavy traffic in certain cities around Nsukka. Before now, this exam had been co-hosted/conducted both at Nsukka and Enugu (UNEC) campuses of the University, but this time, all the candidates will have to head to Nsukka, the only venue for this year. Also, statistics shows that over 50,000 candidates will be coming for the exams, that is a break down from over 60,000 that made UNN their first or second choice and scored 200 or above in the JAMB UTME. Note that a total of 128,776 candidates chose UNN as either their first choice or second choice course in the 2011/2012 JAMB UTME. Official statistics from JAMB is available here. Another point is that there are only about 3 major transport companies (Peace, Ifesinachi, and Globis) that ply the Nsukka route. The points I made above is just to give you a glimpse of what to expect when you decide to come to Nsukka a day before the exam or even on the exam day. Please come ahead of time

2) Transportation in School:
The only means of transportation within the school is via the school’s services known as UNN shuttle (This is clearly written on the shuttles buses and taxis available within and outside the campus). It takes students both in and out of the campus. These shuttles give one a great deal of convenience and a feeling of safety. They have, as their destination, a park in the town, which is very close to Peace Mass Transit park (i.e, in front of the popular Ogige market at Nsukka). It can as well stop you anywhere you wish inside the campus or anywhere within its route. There are also other smaller routes inside the school like the Flat (Zik’s flat) route. The summary of the transport fares is as follows
-Town (Park) to campus:
N 20 by shuttle bus
N 40 by shuttle taxi (mainly V W Golf car)
-Campus to Town (Park):
N 30 by shuttle bus
N 40 by shuttle taxi
-Anywhere within the Campus is N30.

It’s not advisable to ask for lift that day, pay for your transport fares. However, it is more painful not to know anyone or anything about the school before coming. Guess what? You’re at advantage for having gone through this. Ladies, as the most ‘endangered’ specie, we would say, “OPEN YOUR EYES.” We have our reasons; find out as you read on.

3) Ask for Help If Need be
When you need help in any way like locating a particular place in the school, ask for it, don’t pretend. Once it’s your first time of being to the School, whoever sees you would know, you can’t hide it. Just look for good and innocent looking student (although appearance can be deceptive) and ask for what you want. UNN students are friendly and generous; there’ll always be somebody ready to help.

4a)Accommodation:
In the past, the school provided accommodation for Post UME candidates who are required to pay N500 for the accommodation, and I believe same will be applicable this year. If you prefer a private accommodation, there are few hotels and lodgings in Nsukka, some of which are CEC( the school owned lodging), New & Old Hotel Carolina (outside, but close to the school), Milipat, Conis hotels. These few hotels & lodgings will surely be in hot demands. If you plan on staying with a friend, make sure you contact him or her ahead of time. However, most accommodation problems are been mitigated by the different campus fellowship bodies who will always be available with their buses, helping stranded candidates get an accommodation, and locate their different locations. Though you may have to leave your own faith or fellowship when you are finally admitted into the University as you‘ll get constant SMSs, calls, visits, and pestering to join their fellowship.

b) Don’t worry about what to eat:
Yes, it’s funny but I know some mummy pikins will actually be thinking about this. There is a variety of food to eat in Nsukka, the most popular being OKPA, a popular pudding eaten and enjoyed by many in Enugu state. It’s eaten like peanuts here, and I bet you‘ll enjoy it (although some of them can be REALLY pepperish). There are also other native Nsukka foods like aghara agha Ji, aghara agha ede, aghara agha oka. Don’t ask me how they taste, just taste and see for yourself, lol. You‘ll also get the usual general foods you see in other parts of the country.

5) Come with all the requirements:
You are required to bring the following for the screening exercise:
(i) A copy of ONLINE form duly completed, bearing the passport-sized photograph.
(ii)JAMB slip
(iii)HB Pencil and Eraser.

Do not go to the exam halls with your mobile phone as you‘ll be forced to drop it outside the hall, and who knows what will happen to it before you could come out to pick it. Information on the halls for the screening will be made available at the P.R.O. office in the campus and will also be available on this site a day before the exam.

6) Come for the exam prepared:
It’s almost impossible to prepare too much. Read extensively and within the JAMB curriculum. In the battle field, no enemy is less important. Do not look down on any question during the exam. Attack each of them like a soldier that is fighting with his last breath. However, DO NOT CHEAT! DO NOT INVOLVE YOUR SELF IN EXAM MALPRACTICE, UNN does not tolerate that. It’s a serious offence here!

7) Have an Alternative Phone Number Other than MTN:
It is important that you have an alternative phone number other than MTN with which you can contact whoever you‘ll stay with when you come to the school or with which you can be contacted easily as time has shown that MTN network in Nsukka most times go down whenever there is a big event like the post UME especially in the evenings.

coolBeware of scammers:
You have to be very careful ‘cos there will be wolves in sheep’s clothing. These fraudsters, who of course are not bonafide students of the University will be targeting gullible Post Ume candidates with offers of Admission runs, Accommodation (both free and paid), especially to Post ume girls. Don’t ask me why they prefer offering the accommodation to girls ‘cos I don’t know. They will always come as friends. You just have to be wise.

9) You are Secured!!
Once you are inside the University of Nigeria, your security is guaranteed. The university has a vibrant security department with a rapid response unit. You don’t have to panic. So whenever you find yourself in trouble, just raise an alarm and be sure you‘ll get a rapid response. 10 Get A Glimpse of How the questions look like

The last but not the least, many students will want to know how the UNN post Ume questions look like by getting a past question. It is very important!! And of course there is no compiled past question that has detailed step by step solutions like the Myschool Past Questions & Answers

Education / UNN Admit "Only" 7,000 Fresh Students Out Of Over 100,000 Applicants by koolnd: 11:28pm On Jan 17, 2013
Only about 7,000 new students were formally admitted into various faculties of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) during the 39th Matriculation ceremony of the institution held Thursday.

Addressing the fresh students, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Bartho Okolo congratulated them for their success during the admission stage and tasked them to tow the footsteps of great men and women who had passed through the University on their path to eminence.

The Vice-Chancellor’s address was read by Deans of Faculty, as the matriculation ceremony was held in different faculties of the University.

Prof Okolor said; “You earned a place at today’s ceremony because of your impressive performances at both the University Matriculation Examination (UME) and the Post University Matriculation Examination (PUME). You should all be proud of this achievement.”

“However, you should be humbled by the fact that less than 7,000 of you have been given the opportunity out of the over 100,000 candidates that competed for a place at the University of Nigeria.”

Prof. Okolo advised the fresh students to resist any temptation of involving themselves in anti-social behaviours, stressing that the University had zero tolerance policy on cultism and examination malpractice.

He further asked those who were already members of cult groups before joining the University to denounce such memberships or risk being expelled and prosecuted by the police.

“There are a number of legitimate students’ clubs which are registered with the Department of Students’ Affairs. You are encouraged to identify the ones that appeal to you, and to register and participate in the activities of these genuine associations,” the VC told the students.

He also entreated them to be law-abiding and prioritise their academic work to enable them achieve their mission to the University.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that his administration had made spirited effort to improve the welfare of students and provide a congenial environment for their learning.

According to him, the administration had embarked on the execution of students’ oriented projects, ranging from the modernisation of classrooms and laboratories, construction of students’ multipurpose centre, to digitalisation of classrooms and provision of facilities for extra-curricular activities.

Prof. Okolo assured the students that the University will not renege on its duty to offer them the needed support to enable them actualise their dreams and aspirations. He however urged them to make their own input, stating that “to whom much is given, much is also expected”.

The question is: Do we rejoice or weep ? Only 7% of the applicants are to realise their dreams eventually. What of the rest?. Any meaningful alternatives? If a University of Nigeria absorbed only about 7%, what would become of others??
