Literacy is one of the top priorities of all developed, less developed and civilized societies of the world. We all want to give our children and coming generations the best educational facilities possible. But as the emphasis and efforts on the availability and attainment of education have multiplied, the quality of education is somewhat decreased.
Quality is deteriorating: According to the analysis of experts and educationists, although the number of schools and colleges in every region has grown very large, their ability to grooms students and make those better citizens has decreased. These educational institutions impart the necessary lessons and lecture of the academic syllabi but lack the content and practical efforts to bring out good citizenship values and attributes in students.
Development of new generation: Most of the parents who send their children to school desire to make their kids well-groomed and effective citizens of the society as they grow up. But this requires a lot of efforts not only for the parents but also for the teachers. Preparing the upcoming generation for engaging in social activities effectively and becoming responsible members of society is only possible if both parents and teachers work together.
Who is an effective citizen? Many of you might be wondering what would fall under the category of an effective citizen? So for those here is a brief definition. An effective citizen is a member of the society who has the required knowledge, skill set and behavior that is needed for living in a civilized society or country.
Guidelines for educating students to become good and effective citizens: Some important steps or guidelines that can be followed for becoming an effective citizen through education are described below:
• Students should be taught the skills and values that are related to civic lifestyle.
• Various levels of behaviors and attitudes towards other members of the society should be informed about.
• Through activities in the school and general atmosphere in the classroom, students can be educated about dealing with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
• Basic knowledge and education about citizenship, their rights and responsibilities should be provided along with the curriculum.
• Through school elections and community building, students can be educated about the civic systems in the cities and how they should be dealt with.
• Equality in education and all other activities should be ensured for exemplary demonstration of a good society
• Inviting the parents and personalities from various walks of life to share their experiences and knowledge is always a great way to enhance understanding and motivate the students for being morally upright and responsible.
• Students should be encouraged in discussions and interaction with students through various activities and exercises.
• Productive conflict is always good but there should be proper conflict management training for the students. These can be very important for their life as a good citizen.
• Students need to be taught about the sovereignty of their country and how they need to protect this nationalism with patriotism.
• Students should take full ownership of their countries and civic societies to become active and effective citizens in their future lives.
