Part-time employment opportunities

Current labour laws of the UAE do not permit students on student visas from undertaking paid employment in any capacity.

As a result of an initiative undertaken by Dubai Knowledge Village, students enrolled at UOWD, however, may undertake internships with a select group of 30 to 50 companies based in the Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone.

Eligible candidates need to be enrolled in a full-time program of study at UOWD, have complete at least one semester and have achieved a GPA of 3.0 or above.

Due to demand, placement opportunities may be limited but will be in the areas of marketing, human resources, information systems and sales.
FAQ for international students considering studying for a postgraduate degree at UOWD

What kind of job can I get with my postgraduate degree?

UOWD postgraduate degrees equip students with the theoretical knowledge to progress to supervisory and managerial positions in their current field of work or study. For those students with little or no work experience an MIB prepares them for entry level or junior supervisory positions in areas such as business administration, marketing, sales, operations, HR and Finance. Work experience, whether paid or unpaid and engagement in extra curricular activities while at university will add value to your degree.

How easy is it to find a full time job in Dubai?

The job market is quite competitive, so be prepared to spend a few months searching in order to secure a quality full time, reasonably paid job. You should therefore make sure you are able to financially support yourself during this time.

What kind of salary can I expect?

Salaries in Dubai range enormously depending on the particular company and the field of work. The range for fresh graduates can be anything from about AED 3,500 per month up to about AED 5,000 or AED 6000. For people with a few years relevant experience and for managerial positions the range is anything from AED 6000 to AED 15,000 and upwards. Again it depends on the company, your experience and area of expertise. Bear in mind that salaries do not necessarily reflect the cost of living here.

What help does the university give students to find a job?

Part time and full time jobs and internships for students and postgraduates with local and multinational companies in Dubai are all regularly advertised to UOWD students through an online job vacancies database and the careers noticeboards.

Each session, the university careers service runs workshops on CV writing, interview techniques and job search and networking skills. Professionals from local and multinational companies in Dubai, regularly give talks at the university to students about careers in different areas of business and industry. The careers service also provides free of charge occupational information leaflets, and handouts on CV writing, interview and job search techniques and keeps a small library of careers related books and DVDs for students to borrow.

What opportunities are there to take up work experience or internships during my studies?

The university works with local companies to arrange a number of internship placements for both postgraduate and undergraduate students. These are competitive internships and selection is through interview at the company providing the internship. The number of internships vary each year, depending on the needs of the companies and availability of staff to supervise interns. Alternatively students can and do, arrange their own internships through their own contacts.

Can I work on a student visa?

Currently, UAE labour law does not allow students on university sponsored visas to do any sort of paid work. These students may take up unpaid internships but must obtain permission from the university before starting the internship. Post graduate students who secure full time work must change from the university sponsored visa to an employer sponsored visa. Employer sponsored visas are generally not available for part time work.

What is the credibility of UOWD?

Degrees from UOWD are internationally recognized and are accredited by the Australian Government and the UAE Ministry of Education. The courses taught at UOWD are exactly the same in content as those taught at UOW, Australia. UOW is one of the top ranking universities in Australia in terms of teaching and research quality and graduate outcomes.

@PROMISE -thanks for your response it was indeed helpful now i know better.one of the things that made me settle/decide for university of wollongong in dubai is because it is an australian university and the fact you can always transfer your credit from uowd to uni of wollongong australia is another attraction for me.well for the cost of living 1200aed for a month though expensive is still ok compare to hostel accomodation where you have to pay 9000aed for 3 months which is like 370000 naira.
promise are u going back for your studies? n are u for undergraduate or postgraduate? if yes we can use this forum to share ideas, information etc.
