Fashion / CARRIER And ESSENTIAL OILS: Types, Uses, Benefits by krystal00: 9:18am On May 21, 2017
Often times, we see various kinds of oils on display shelves of hair and cosmetic stores for use on the hair and body but do we really know which of these oils to pick at the right time?
What each one is used for?
The right portion to mix?
The right blend of oils?
Possible Side effects?

We will cover all these and more in this post.

CARRIER OILS

Carrier oils contain fat from plants an essential oils need a Base to carry them for effective application which makes carrier oils the best. They are used to dilute essential oils. Examples include;
coconut oil
Sweet almond oil
Jojoba oil
Olive oil
Apricot kernel oil
Rose hip oil
Argan oil
Avocado oil
Castor oil
Flax seed oil
Hemp seed oil
Sesame oil

Carrier oils can be directly applied on the skin and would not cause irritation. They are usually packaged in containers made of plastic or tin because they won't easily evaporate. When using carrier oils usually a much larger quantity is required.

ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential oils do not contain fat and are considered to be beneficial to the life of the plant they are derived from. These oils do not mix with water.

Essential oils are more concentrated in nature and need a little less quantity to be applied compared to carrier oils. They are not directly applied on the skin as most of them can burn the skin or cause severe irritation. Essential oils are packaged differently from carrier oils. Most times in dark colored glass bottles because they tend to evaporate easily.
When it comes to storage, it is advised to store essential oils in dark cool places to avoid exposure to direct sunlight or high temperatures.
Usually, you will find essential oils in much smaller packaging compared to carrier oils. Examples include;
Thyme oil
Rosemary oil
Rose oil
Lavender oil
Ylang ylang oil
Peppermint oil
Tea tree oil
Eucalyptus oil
Orange
