Chapter 2: The Girl Who Wouldn’t Leave

Jason’s polished shoes echoed against the pavement as he stormed down the deserted street, his thoughts a swirling storm of rage, humiliation, and disbelief. The nerve. Isabelle had rejected him like he was some broken toy she’d finally outgrown. He tightened his fists and increased his pace. He left his car and driver behind. He needed to walk. He needed to clear his head. But behind him, soft footsteps persisted.

He turned sharply. “Are you following me?”

The girl froze. Her oversized hoodie hung past her waist, and her hands clutched the bouquet like it was sacred. Her voice was quiet but steady. “You gave me something... I think by mistake.”

Jason scoffed. “Keep it. Sell it. Throw it away. I don’t care.”

“But you do,” she said softly.

That stopped him.

She stepped forward, her eyes—brown and defiant—meeting his. “You don’t throw something like this away unless you’re trying to hurt yourself or someone else. Either way, I’m not letting it end up in a trash can.”

Jason rolled his eyes and turned back toward his gated townhouse. She followed. At the gate, the security system beeped as he scanned in. She waited just outside.

“You can go now,” he muttered.

“No.”

“No?” His voice hardened.

She looked up at him with calm fire. “You gave up. On your girl. On yourself. I fight for scraps every day. I get ignored, rejected, humiliated—and I still show up. But you... you gave up after one ‘no.’”

His hand froze on the gate.

“What did you say?” he asked, barely above a whisper.

“I said,” she repeated, “you threw away your bride and ran instead of fighting. And you tossed a symbol of love like garbage.” She placed the bouquet with the diamond carefully on the ground beside him and turned to leave. “Maybe you don’t deserve it.”

Jason stared after her.

He should’ve walked inside.

But instead…

He called out, “Wait.”

Chapter 1: Shattered on the Rooftop

The rooftop sparkled with string lights and a skyline view that could make anyone fall in love. Anyone—except Isabelle. Jason Holt stood beneath the open sky, heart pounding, holding a velvet ring box and a bouquet of rare calla lilies, her favorite. His tailored tux clung to his tall frame, but nothing could shield him from what was about to happen.

“I can’t do this,” Isabelle whispered, just loud enough to shatter him.

A cold wind swept through the rooftop. Jason blinked, stunned. She looked away, avoiding the trembling in his eyes. “You’re brilliant, Jason. But you feel… empty. You don’t love. You win.”

Silence.

Without another word, she turned and walked toward the elevator, leaving him alone with the city and his silence. Jason’s hand tightened around the bouquet. His jaw clenched. His fingers slipped, and the box tumbled to the ground. The $80,000 diamond ring gleamed in the moonlight like a cruel joke.

He picked it up, shoved it into the petals, and stormed down into the cold night.

Minutes later, he was downstairs on a quiet street near Times Square. His anger fizzled into something colder—numbness. That’s when he saw her. A girl standing on the sidewalk, her hoodie torn, her face smudged, but her eyes alive. She held a cardboard sign that read:
“Not asking for money. Just hope.”

Jason scoffed under his breath. But then—
“Can I take a flower?” she asked, pointing gently to the bouquet in his hand.

Without a word, Jason shoved the entire bouquet into her hands—ring and all—and walked away into the dark.

She blinked, confused… then her eyes caught the glint of something inside.

A diamond.

She stepped forward.

And began to follow him.

Final Chapter: The Price Paid

Femi felt like the walls of the village were closing in on him. His breathing was heavy, his heart pounding like a war drum. Marry Amoke? Stay in the village? The very thought made his skin crawl.

But then, the memories flooded in—the countless women who had left him in disgust, the empty relationships, the loneliness that had consumed his life. He had come here looking for an easy fix, but there was none.

This was it.

His punishment.

Femi turned to Lanre and Shola, searching for an answer in their faces, but they said nothing. This was his decision alone.

Amoke stood before him, unmoving. She wasn’t pleading, wasn’t forcing him. She had simply given him a choice.

Femi swallowed the lump in his throat. “And if I refuse?”

Amoke’s expression didn’t change. “Then leave.”

He blinked. “Just like that?”

She nodded. “Yes. Leave. Go back to Lagos. Go back to your job. But know this—you will never find love. You will live your life alone, watching others build families while you remain unwanted. That is your fate, Femi. Choose.”

The air was thick with silence. Even the villagers watching from a distance seemed to hold their breath.

Femi felt sick. The city was his dream, his identity. But what kind of life would he have there? A man who could never marry, never love, never be loved?

His knees felt weak.

Slowly, painfully, he lifted his eyes to Amoke.

“I…” His voice cracked. “I will stay.”

A murmur swept through the crowd. Amoke’s mother let out a knowing sigh, shaking her head as if she had seen this coming from the beginning.

Amoke didn’t smile. Didn’t celebrate. She simply nodded. “Then it is done.”

Femi felt something inside him shift. The weight on his chest lightened just a little. For the first time in years, he could breathe.

And as he looked around—the village that once felt too small, the people who once worshipped him but now merely accepted him—he realized the cruel truth.

He had played a game and lost.

And now, he would live in the ruins of his own deception.

Forever.

The End.

Chapter Twelve: The Only Way Out

Femi felt a weight settle deep in his chest. He had spent years blaming Amoke’s family, convinced that some dark force was behind his suffering. But now, as he stood before her, hearing her words, another terrifying thought crept into his mind.

Had he done this to himself?

Amoke studied him with an unsettling calmness. There were no tears, no anger—just a quiet certainty that unnerved him.

"You thought you could use me, leave, and live happily ever after?" she asked.

Femi swallowed hard. "Amoke, I—"

"Stop." Her voice was sharp, cutting through his excuses like a blade. "You don’t get to explain. You don’t get to beg. You had years to come back. Years to do the right thing. But you never did. You only came because you’re suffering."

Femi clenched his fists. He wanted to argue, to tell her he had regretted his actions, but the truth was, she was right.

Lanre and Shola stood nearby, silent. This was Femi’s battle now.

Amoke took a deep breath and spoke the words that made his stomach drop.

"You can never be happy again, Femi. You will never find love. No woman will ever stay with you. And not because of a spell—" she leaned in slightly—"but because you destroyed something pure. And now, the universe is returning the favor."

Femi's hands trembled. "Then tell me," he said, desperation creeping into his voice, "how do I fix this?"

For the first time, Amoke hesitated. She glanced toward her mother, who was still watching from a distance. Then, slowly, she turned back to him.

"There’s only one way," she said.

Femi’s heart pounded. "Tell me."

Amoke’s next words nearly knocked the air out of his lungs.

"You have to marry me."

Femi staggered back. "What?"

Amoke’s face remained unreadable. "The only way for you to break free from your misery is to honor the promise you made. You wanted me to be your wife? Then be my husband. Stay here. In the village. With me."

Femi’s breath came in short, sharp gasps. This wasn’t what he had expected. He had come hoping for a quick solution, a ritual, a prayer—anything but this.

His mind screamed at him to refuse, to run. But then he remembered the years of loneliness, the disgust in every woman’s eyes, the way they recoiled from him like he was cursed.

Would he rather live a life where no woman could ever love him?

Or stay in the village and accept his fate?

Amoke took a step closer. "This is your only chance, Femi. What will you do?"

Femi’s vision blurred, his world spinning.

This was it. The price of his deception. And he had to decide if he was willing to pay it.

Chapter Eleven: The Price of His Betrayal

Femi’s throat went dry as he faced Amoke’s mother. She didn’t look surprised to see him—if anything, she looked… amused.

Lanre and Shola shifted uneasily beside him, sensing the heavy tension in the air.

“We knew you would come back, Femi,” the woman repeated, tilting her head slightly. “Did you think you could run forever?”

Femi swallowed hard. He hadn’t even seen Amoke yet, and already, it felt like the village was closing in on him.

“I—I came to apologize,” he managed to say, his voice lacking the usual confidence he once carried.

Amoke’s mother chuckled. “Apologize?” She took a slow step forward. “And what do you expect that will change?”

Femi glanced around. The villagers were watching from a distance, whispering among themselves. He felt like an outsider—like a man who had walked straight into a trap.

“I just want to speak to Amoke,” he said, forcing himself to stand tall.

For the first time, something flickered in the woman’s eyes. A challenge.

“She is inside,” she said, gesturing toward their small compound. “Go and face what you have done.”

Femi hesitated. His hands felt clammy, his legs heavier than they should be.

Lanre patted his back. “You have to do this.”

Femi nodded and took a deep breath before stepping inside the compound.

The small hut he had once walked Amoke to, the same place where she had blushed under her mother’s teasing—it all felt unfamiliar now. Darker.

And then, he saw her.

Amoke sat on a wooden stool under the shade of a tree, peeling cassava. She looked… different. Her once vibrant eyes were dull, her face void of the innocence he remembered.

Femi’s heart clenched.

She lifted her head and locked eyes with him.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Then, she let out a soft, humorless laugh. “So, the great Femi has returned.”

Femi flinched at the sharpness in her voice.

“Amoke, I—”

She held up a hand. “Don’t,” she said coldly. “Don’t waste your breath.”

Femi felt his chest tighten. He had prepared to see her cry, to hear her yell at him. But this? This quiet, deadened version of Amoke was worse than anything he had imagined.

“I never meant to hurt you,” he said, his voice cracking slightly.

Amoke stared at him for a long moment before shaking her head. “Lies,” she whispered. “That’s all you ever had for me.”

Femi clenched his fists. “Please, just tell me… is it true? Did your mother—” He hesitated. “Did she do something to me?”

For the first time, Amoke smiled. But it was not a smile of happiness—it was a smile of knowing.

“My mother?” she repeated. “Femi, do you think my mother needed to do anything to you?”

Femi frowned. “What do you mean?”

Amoke stood slowly, stepping toward him. When she spoke, her words sent a chill down his spine.

“Some betrayals do not need spells to haunt you. Sometimes, the universe simply takes care of its own.”

Femi’s breath caught in his throat.

Had he really cursed himself?

Chapter Ten: The Journey Back

Femi delayed as long as he could. He tried dating again, hoping against hope that this time would be different. But it wasn’t.

Every woman he got serious with left the moment he brought up marriage. The same horrified expression. The same words.

"Femi, I don’t know what it is, but you stink. I can’t do this."

It was no longer a coincidence. It was a reality he couldn’t escape.

One evening, as he sat alone in his apartment, staring at his reflection in the mirror, he saw it—the emptiness in his own eyes.

He had everything. A good job. Wealth. Freedom.

Yet, he had nothing.

No love. No wife. No peace.

And for the first time, he admitted it to himself.

"I have to go back."

The next morning, he told Lanre and Shola his decision.

Lanre exhaled in relief. “It’s about time.”

Shola nodded. “Let’s not waste any more time. We’re coming with you.”

Femi was surprised. “You don’t have to—”

Lanre gave him a look. “This isn’t just your mess, Femi. We were there. We let you do it. We should have stopped you.”

And so, for the first time in years, Femi found himself in his SUV heading back to the one place he had sworn never to return to.

The journey was long, but his thoughts were longer. Memories of Amoke haunted him—the way she had smiled at him, the way she had trusted him, the way she had looked at him the night he had vanished.

What would she say when she saw him? Would she even look at him?

Would she forgive him?

As the bus pulled into the dusty road leading to the village, Femi felt his chest tighten. Nothing had changed—the same small huts, the same narrow paths, the same people who had once revered him.

But something was different.

The moment he stepped off the SUV, the villagers stared.

They weren’t curious like before. They weren’t excited.

They were expecting him.

Femi swallowed hard.

Then, from across the road, a familiar figure emerged.

Amoke’s mother.

She stood with her arms crossed, staring at him with an unreadable expression. Then, slowly, a knowing smirk curved her lips.

“We knew you would come back, Femi.”

Femi’s heart stopped.

They had been waiting for him.

Episode Nine: Desperation and Denial

Femi tried to fight it. He told himself it was all in his head, a string of bad fortunes, a coincidence that had nothing to do with the past. But the harder he tried to ignore it, the worse it got.

His friends, now all married or in serious relationships, started noticing something was wrong.

“Lanre, I don’t get it,” Femi said one evening, frustration lacing his voice. “What the hell is happening to me?”

Lanre sighed, setting down his drink. “Femi, do you really want me to say it?”

Femi shot him a sharp look. “Don’t start with that village nonsense.”

Shola, who had been silent, finally spoke. “It’s not nonsense, Femi. This isn’t normal. Every woman you propose to reacts the same way, and only you can’t see the pattern?”

Femi scoffed, leaning back. “So, what? You think Amoke’s family did something to me? That’s ridiculous.”

Lanre exchanged a look with Shola before shaking his head. “Is it? You abandoned her, Femi. Not just broke up with her—you ran away without a word. That girl gave you everything, believed in you, and you disappeared like she was nothing.”

Femi’s stomach twisted, but he masked it with defiance. “Even if that’s true, what am I supposed to do now?”

Silence settled between them. Then, Shola spoke carefully. “You need to go back.”

Femi stared at him, stunned. “Back? To the village?”

Lanre nodded. “You need to make things right.”

Femi let out a bitter laugh. “And do what? Apologize? Say, ‘Hey, Amoke, sorry I ruined your life, now please remove this invisible curse you put on me’?”

Shola sighed. “It’s the only way.”

Femi shook his head, standing abruptly. “No. I’m not going back. That’s the past. I don’t believe in all this rubbish.”

But as he walked away, a small voice in his head whispered something terrifying.

You don’t believe in it?

Then why are you so afraid?

That night, Femi lay awake, staring at the ceiling, the weight of his past pressing down on him like a suffocating blanket.

He could deny it all he wanted. He could keep running, pretending this was just a bad fortune.

But deep inside, he knew.

The only way forward… was back.

Chapter Eight: The Curse Begins

Lagos embraced Femi with its usual chaos—horns blaring, streets bustling, and opportunities waiting at every corner. He settled quickly into his new life, securing a job at a reputable bank within months. With a stable income, a nice apartment, and a promising career, everything seemed to be falling into place.

Women, too, came easily. Lagos was full of sophisticated, beautiful ladies, and Femi had no trouble charming them. His confidence, city-boy charisma, and well-paying job made him a catch. He basked in the attention, enjoying the thrill of romance without a care in the world.

But soon, something strange started happening.

Femi noticed a bizarre pattern—every time he got close to a woman, things would go wrong in an inexplicable way. At first, it was minor: a woman he was seeing would suddenly become cold and distant for no reason. Another, whom he had been certain was falling for him, ghosted him overnight. He dismissed it as bad fortunes.

But then, it got worse.

Femi had been dating Ifeoma for eleven months—she was smart, gorgeous, and everything he wanted in a wife. They were perfect together, and he felt it was time to take things to the next level. One evening, he planned a romantic dinner, bought a ring, and got down on one knee.

“Ifeoma, will you marry me?” he asked, smiling.

Her expression shifted in an instant. Her eyes widened in horror as she jerked back violently, nearly knocking over her chair.

“Femi… what is that smell?” she choked, covering her nose.

Femi blinked, confused. “Smell? What smell?”

Ifeoma gagged, grabbing her purse and stumbling backward. “It’s—oh my God, it’s unbearable! I can’t—”

She ran out of the restaurant without another word, leaving Femi humiliated and stunned.

It happened again with the next woman. And the next. Each time, the pattern was the same—everything would go well until he proposed. The moment he mentioned marriage, his partner would react as though he had suddenly been drenched in the most putrid stench imaginable.

He tried everything. He scrubbed himself raw in the shower. He used the most expensive colognes. He even changed his diet. Nothing worked.

Femi became desperate. He sought medical advice, only to be told there was nothing physically wrong with him. “It must be psychological,” one doctor suggested, but Femi knew better. This was something else.

One night, as he sat alone in his apartment, staring at yet another engagement ring that would never be worn, a cold realization crept into his mind.

It wasn’t a bad fortune. It wasn’t coincidence.

It was punishment.

His mind raced back to the village, to Amoke, to the day he abandoned her without a word.

Femi’s breath hitched.

For the first time in his life, he was truly afraid.

And deep inside, he knew—this was just the beginning.

Episode Seven: The Great Escape

The day finally arrived—a day after their final examinations! Femi couldn’t bring himself to face Amoke. He knew she would cry, beg, and cling to the dream he had fed her. And he wasn’t strong enough to deal with that.

So, he took the coward’s way out.

The night before he was supposed to leave for Lagos, he packed his bags in silence. His heart pounded with every item he shoved into his small travel bag. Lanre and Shola watched him from the corner of the room, their faces etched with disappointment.

“This is wrong, Femi,” Lanre muttered. “At least say goodbye to her.”

Femi shook his head. “No. If I see her, I might hesitate. It’s better this way.”

Shola sighed heavily. “You think disappearing will make it easier? It will only make it worse.”

Femi ignored them. He was doing what needed to be done.

At midnight, when the village was wrapped in darkness and silence, Femi crept out of the house. His heart pounded with every step as he slipped past familiar huts, avoiding the paths he knew Amoke or her family might take. His only goal was to reach the bus park unnoticed.

Just as he reached the outskirts of the village, he hesitated. A part of him wanted to turn back. But then he pictured Amoke’s face, her innocent eyes, the way she had trusted him so completely.

Guilt clawed at his chest. But fear of confrontation was stronger.

With a deep breath, Femi stepped onto the waiting bus. As it rumbled to life, he stared out the window, watching the village fade into the distance. His hands felt cold, his chest tight.

It was over. He was free.

Or so he thought.

But what he left behind would never truly let him go.

Episode Six: The Trap Tightens

Femi tried to shake off the old woman’s words, but they clung to him like a shadow. His usual confidence felt shaky, and for the first time, doubt crept into his mind. Was there really something to be afraid of?

But as soon as he saw Amoke that evening, all his worries melted away.

She stood waiting for him outside her family’s compound, her eyes lighting up the moment she spotted him. She had prepared a special meal for him and even brought him a small gourd of palm wine. Femi smiled, accepting it as she beamed with pride.

"Femi," she said softly, her voice laced with deep emotion. "Do you still mean what you said? That you will take me to the city?"

Femi hesitated for the briefest second before forcing a reassuring smile. "Of course, Amoke. I will marry you, and we will build a beautiful life together."

She sighed happily, resting her head against his chest. Femi felt a pang of guilt, but he quickly silenced it. He had played this game for too long to stop now.

Later that night, as he sat with Lanre and Shola, the conversation turned serious once again.

“She loves you, Femi,” Shola said bluntly. “More than you realize. And the whole village sees you as her future husband now.”

Lanre added, “People talk, Femi. If you disappear after graduation, it won’t end well. You don’t understand these people. Their ways are deep.”

Femi waved them off, though their words unsettled him. “Nothing will happen. She’ll move on.”

But deep down, a small voice whispered—Are you sure?

The next morning, as he walked toward the polytechnic, something unusual happened.

A group of village elders, including Amoke’s father, was gathered under a large tree. As Femi passed, the conversation stopped. The men turned to look at him, their expressions unreadable.

One of them, a grey-haired elder with piercing eyes, called out.

"Femi, my son, come here."

Femi hesitated. Something about their demeanor made him uneasy. But he forced a smile and walked toward them.

The elder studied him for a long moment before speaking.

"You are a good young man," he said. "Amoke is fortunate to have found you."

Femi swallowed, nodding. "Yes, sir."

Another elder chimed in. "Do you know the value of a promise, Femi?"

Femi’s mouth went dry. "Yes… I do."

The first elder leaned in slightly, his voice low but firm. "Then remember this—a man’s word in this village is more than just words. It is binding. It carries power. And breaking it… has consequences."

Femi felt a cold shiver run down his spine.

For the first time, he realized he wasn’t just playing a game anymore. He was trapped in something much bigger than he had ever imagined.

Episode Five: The First Warning

Femi brushed off Shola’s warning, laughing as if the idea of consequences was absurd. He had always been in control of his life, and this was no different. To him, Amoke was just a phase—one that would end the moment he left the village.

But that night, something felt… off.

As he lay in bed, a strange unease settled over him. The air in his small room felt heavy, and for the first time, he found it difficult to sleep. Shadows flickered against the walls, stretching unnaturally long under the dim lantern light. The usual sounds of crickets and distant village chatter seemed eerily silent.

Then, just as his eyes began to close, he heard it.

A whisper.

Faint. Low. Right outside his window.

Femi bolted upright, heart pounding. He held his breath, straining to listen. The whispering continued—soft, indistinct, like voices carried by the wind. He couldn't make out the words, but something about them sent a chill down his spine.

Swallowing hard, he grabbed his torchlight and crept toward the window. Slowly, he lifted the curtain.

Nothing.

The moon cast long shadows across the compound, and everything was still. Femi exhaled, shaking his head at his own paranoia. Maybe Shola’s words had gotten into his head.

The next morning, he told himself he had imagined it. But as he walked through the village, something unsettling happened.

The old woman he had seen on his first day—the one who had given him that strange look—was sitting by the roadside. This time, she didn’t just shake her head.

She smiled.

A slow, knowing smile that sent ice through his veins.

And then she spoke.

“The hunter who plays with the cub will one day face the wrath of the mother lion.”

Femi froze.

The woman chuckled, her eyes gleaming. “Do not say you were not warned.”

Femi forced out a laugh, but it felt hollow. He quickened his steps, suddenly eager to be anywhere but there.

But as he left, the unease from the night before returned.

And this time, it refused to leave.

For the first time since his game began, Femi felt something he had never felt before.

Fear.

Episode Four: Sinking Deeper

Amoke’s world was painted in love. Every moment with Femi felt like a fairytale, and she had no doubts—he was hers, and she was his. She worked even harder on the farm, saving little by little for the future she believed awaited her in the city. When she cooked, she made sure to prepare his favorite meals, bringing them to him with a proud heart.

Femi played his role well. Each time he took a bite of her food, he would hum in appreciation, pulling her close and whispering, "If you keep spoiling me like this, I might never leave." Amoke would giggle, not realizing that in Femi’s mind, the countdown to his departure had already begun.

The village women watched with envy, whispering about Amoke’s good fortune. “She will live in the city,” they said. “Her life will be different from ours.” Even her mother, once cautious, began to believe.

evening, as the sun cast golden hues over the village, Amoke arrived at Femi’s house, balancing a tray of steaming pounded yam and vegetable soup. She knocked gently before stepping in, only to find Femi lying lazily on his mat, laughing with his friends.

Lanre’s face hardened the moment he saw Amoke. Unlike Femi, he had developed a deep sense of guilt. The girl was giving her all, and she had no idea she was living a lie.

Femi grinned as she set the food down. “My wife,” he teased, pulling her into his lap. “Always taking care of me.”

Amoke flushed with happiness, basking in his attention.

But Lanre couldn’t take it anymore. After Amoke left, he turned to Femi. “You need to stop this. Now.”

Femi sighed dramatically. “Lanre, we’ve been over this.”

“No, Femi, you don’t understand,” Lanre shot back. “That girl is giving you everything. Her heart, her trust… do you think you can just walk away without consequences?”

Femi chuckled. “What consequences? She’s a village girl. She will cry for a while and move on.”

Shola, who had been quiet, finally spoke. “You think so? Have you forgotten where you are?”

Femi frowned. “What do you mean?”

Shola leaned forward, lowering his voice. “This is not Lagos, Femi. This is a village known for its ways. Do you really think you can break a girl’s heart so brutally and just leave without repercussions?”

For the first time, Femi didn’t have a response.

A strange chill settled over the room.

And in the distance, an owl hooted—a lone, eerie sound cutting through the quiet night.

Episode 3: A Love Too Deep

Amoke’s world had changed. Every evening, she found herself waiting—hoping—to run into Femi on her way home. His kindness, his deep voice, the way he smiled at her like she was the only girl in the world—it was all overwhelming. She had tried to fight it at first, remembering her mother’s warnings, but it was no use.

Femi had become a part of her routine, and eventually, a part of her heart.

Her mother noticed. “Amoke,” she said one night as they sat by the fire, “this city boy… are you sure he truly loves you?”

Amoke blushed, lowering her gaze. “Mama, he is not like the others.”

Her mother sighed. “That is what every girl says before she learns the truth.”

But Amoke refused to believe anything bad about Femi. Hadn’t he proven himself? He was patient, gentle, and never rushed her. Unlike other boys, he didn’t demand anything from her—at least, not yet.

Days turned into weeks, and Femi deepened his hold on her heart. He would visit her at the market, carrying her basket as she shopped. He would sit outside her compound in the evenings, chatting with her younger siblings. And when he held her hand for the first time, whispering, “You are special to me, Amoke,” she felt her soul melt.

One night, under the bright moonlight, Femi finally spoke the words she had been longing to hear.

“I love you, Amoke,” he whispered, brushing a strand of hair from her face.

Tears welled in her eyes. “You do?”

“With all my heart.” He cupped her face gently. “I want to marry you. When I graduate, I will take you to the city. I will give you a good life.”

Amoke’s heart soared. She had heard of city boys who lied, but Femi wasn’t like them. He had promised her a future, and she believed him with all her soul.

That night, she laid on her mat, unable to sleep, replaying his words over and over. I will marry you. I will take you to the city.

But in another part of the village, inside Femi’s small rented house, his friends sat in heavy silence.

Lanre was the first to speak. “Femi, do you mean all that nonsense you told her tonight?”

Femi smirked, pouring himself a drink. “Of course not.”

Shola exhaled sharply, running a hand over his head. “Femi, this is wrong. That girl believes you.”

“She believes what I want her to believe,” Femi said, shrugging. “I’m getting free food, care, and…” He paused, a mischievous glint in his eyes. “Soon, I’ll get the rest.”

Lanre slammed his fist on the table. “You’re playing with someone’s heart!”

Femi laughed, unconcerned. “And when I graduate? I’ll pack my bags and disappear. Simple.”

Shola shook his head in frustration. “One day, Femi… one day, you’ll regret this.”

Femi only grinned, swirling his drink.

But deep in the village, Amoke was lying awake, dreaming of a love that never truly existed.

Episode 2: Breaking Through the Walls

Days passed, and Femi made it a habit to walk the same route after school, hoping to run into Amoke. He was patient, never pushy—just present. And each time he saw her, he greeted her warmly, sometimes offering to help with her load. At first, she refused, but with time, her resistance softened.

Amoke had always been wary of city boys, yet Femi’s persistent kindness unsettled her. He was different from the stories her mother told. He was polite, never boastful, and spoke to her like an equal. Each time he helped carry her firewood, he would only take it halfway, making sure not to overstep. And every evening after their encounters, she found herself thinking about him.

One evening, as they walked together, Femi turned to her. “I hope your mother won’t be too angry that I help you.”

Amoke blushed. “She sees us sometimes,” she admitted. “She pretends not to, but she knows.”

Femi smirked. “And what does she say?”

“She teases me,” Amoke whispered, her cheeks flushing. “She calls you my city husband.”

Femi laughed, a rich, deep sound that made Amoke’s heart flutter. He saw it—the way she lowered her eyes, the way she smiled shyly. She was falling, and he knew it.

From that day, Femi started walking her closer to her home, where her siblings would peek from behind the hut, giggling. Her mother would pretend not to notice but would smile knowingly. The village soon buzzed with the news—Amoke had captured the heart of a city boy. Women whispered prayers, wishing their daughters the same fate. Men nodded in approval, proud that their village could charm an outsider.

One evening, as Femi's friends were returning home, they overheard a group of village girls chattering excitedly nearby.

“Amoke is so fortunate,” one said. “A real city husband! Not like these unserious boys here.”

“If only I could be as fortunate,” another sighed.

Femi’s friends exchanged uneasy glances. That night, when they returned home, they sat Femi down.

“This has gone too far,” Lanre said firmly. “You need to be honest with her.”

Femi chuckled, stretching lazily. “Honest? About what?”

Shola leaned forward, eyes dark with concern. “Femi, do you really love Amoke?”

Femi smirked, his voice dropping to a whisper. “I don’t love her. I’m just using her. How could I love a village girl with that thick disgusting local accent?”

A heavy silence filled the room. Lanre clenched his jaw, shaking his head in disappointment. “Femi, you’re playing with fire.”

Femi only laughed. “Fire?” He leaned back, unconcerned. “She’s just a village girl. What’s the worst that could happen?”

But what Femi didn’t know was that the fire he was playing with… was already burning.

Episode One:
A City Boy in a Strange Land

Femi stood at the bus park, taking in his new reality. The air was thick with the scent of freshly tilled soil and the unmistakable aroma of burning firewood. The polytechnic, his new home for the next two years, was located in a remote village far from the noise and sophistication of Lagos. He adjusted his backpack, feeling out of place among the villagers who eyed him with admiration and curiosity.

The village was small, with dusty roads and houses made of mud bricks. Everything about it screamed simplicity—too simple for someone like Femi, who had grown up in a bustling city filled with bright lights and endless opportunities. However, one thing soon became clear: the students from the city were revered here. Villagers treated them like royalty, their very presence adding a layer of prestige to those who associated with them.

As he walked toward his new hostel, he could already sense the privileges that came with being a city boy. The village traders smiled at him, eager to sell their wares. Young boys followed him, asking about life in Lagos. The girls giggled, whispering among themselves. He smirked—this was going to be easier than he thought.

But just as he was about to enter his hostel, an old woman standing by the roadside caught his eye. She stared at him intently, her lips slightly curled as if she knew something he didn’t. Femi felt a strange chill down his spine. The woman shook her head and muttered words too low for him to hear before turning away.

Femi shrugged it off. After all, what could an old village woman possibly know about him?

Little did he know, his arrival had already set something dark in motion.

The Unexpected Connection

The sun hung low in the sky as Femi and his two friends, Lanre and Shola, walked home from school. Their off-campus house was a long trek from the polytechnic, but they had grown used to the dusty village roads. The village, though simple, had a certain charm—one that Femi was only beginning to appreciate.

As they rounded a bend, they spotted a young woman struggling under the weight of a heavy bundle of firewood. She walked with measured steps, her body swaying slightly with each stride. Her wrapper was tied tightly around her full hips, and sweat glistened on her dark skin. She was average-looking but had an undeniable presence.

Femi slowed his pace. "Who is she?" he asked, eyes fixed on the girl.

Shola smirked. "That’s Amoke. She’s from one of the well-known families in the village. But be careful, her mother warns her about city boys."

Femi grinned. "Is that so?"

Before his friends could stop him, he quickened his pace and approached Amoke. “Let me help you with that,” he offered, reaching for her load.

Amoke startled, gripping the firewood tighter. She had heard stories of city boys—how they deceived village girls and left them heartbroken. Her mother had warned her countless times.

“I’m fine,” she replied, her voice thick with caution and heavy with a local accent.

Femi chuckled, undeterred. “Carrying all this alone? You must be the strongest woman in this village.”

His words caught her off guard. A small smile played at the corner of her lips, but she quickly suppressed it. Without another word, she hurried past him, leaving Femi standing there, amused.

Lanre shook his head. "You’ve lost your senses. A village girl?"

Femi only smiled. “Trust me, I know what I’m doing.”

And so, the game had begun.
