Hello Nairalanders, We’ve all seen it — the dramatic proposal where a man goes down on one knee, brings out a ring, and asks, “Will you marry me?” The crowd watches. Phones are recording. Emotions run high. But here’s my question: Is kneeling really necessary, or are we just copying Western culture without thinking deeply? A Quick Look at the History Proposing on one knee comes from old European traditions — where knights knelt before royalty or religious figures. Over time, this became a way for men to "honor" women during proposals. But is this even part of African tradition or our cultural values? My Personal Take (Might Offend Some) Let me be honest — and maybe a little sarcastic. After years of dating, deep emotional connection, and even sex (which was originally meant for marriage), a man still has to kneel down before the relationship is “official”? I asked a lady if she'd accept a proposal from a man who didn’t kneel. She said No — because she believed it meant he didn’t respect her. But think about it — if she refuses the proposal, what were they both doing all along? Were they just playing? Looking at Nature, Culture, and Religion Naturally: Marriage is about commitment, not public performance. Culturally (African): Respect is shown through action and integrity, not posture. Religiously: Marriage is a sacred covenant — not a romantic show for social media. So What Matters in Proposals? Let’s focus on what truly counts: Honesty Emotional maturity Compatibility Family involvement Shared values and faith. Kneeling may be romantic, but it does not determine the success or sincerity of a marriage. Let’s Discuss: 1. Must a man kneel to propose in order to show respect? 2. Ladies: If your boyfriend proposes while standing, would you still say Yes? 3. What’s more important: the proposal itself or the relationship behind it? Let’s hear your thoughts. Share your opinions, experiences, and what you truly believe about proposals in today’s society.

It is very disheartening and questioning when someone still steal what he/she gets at home anyway anytime, isnt it? This is applicable to cheating in marriage and most people belive the only reason behind that is lack of sexual Intercourse. This is far from that because I have stories of people that have sex to the satisfaction level yet cheat base on diverse reasons. Some even do it as a result of getting back to their spouses for cheating on them. Today is the second time I will hear people with chronic sickness such as cancer, goiter, kidney survive without their healness being a factor of doctors treatment but divine intervention. Some years back, I heard of a story of a woman who had breast cancer and was diagnosed to be dead soon. She was very rich and alone. She employed a maid that was sent to her from abroad. She observed the maid always use the toilet often and whenever she uses the toilet, she stays very late. This, the woman wasn't comfortable with. One day, she called to ask the reason for that action. To her utmost bafflement, the lady told her she just gave birth 2 months ago. She accepted this work because she needed money. Whenever her breast is heavy as a result of breast milk, she goes to the toilet and presses it away and cries because she's missing her baby. The boss, who had been listening intently couldn't help but tears flowed down her cheek. She then paid the woman off and still compensated her handsomely. Few weeks afterward, he went for check up and it was a surprise even by the doctors that, the long stayed sickness has disappeared The second one I heard was my boss' husband's elder sister who had been diagnosed with cancer, kidney disease, and so many deadly diseases. All these diseases were self cured. What did she do? She is someone that gives to the needy. If she buys pure water that worth #100, she will give the seller #500 and that is how she has been leaving her life. Yesterday, her healness turned all the doctors at Ikeja Hospital to an amateur. They were very surprised at the healing. If not God, who can? Utilize what you learn from these stories. It is not a crafted one but reality! Thank you! Aweda Olawale Kudus
