The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Lagos State chapter has challenged President Buhari Muhammadu to direct all political office holders to henceforth seek medical attention in Nigeria and ban them from oversea medical treatment.

The Nigerian Institute of Welding (TIW), Maiduguri, on Wednesday said it would train 600 persons on welding entrepreneurship skills.

Habu Tijjani, the Chairman of TIW in Borno, said the institute was a duly registered organisation and globally recognised to promote best practices in welding and allied technology in the country.

He said the gesture would enhance the production of welders of international standard to encourage the nation’s welding works; adding that the training of local welders would also check the influx of foreign technicians into the country.

A UNICEF report, released on Wednesday in New York, reveals that the
number of children under 5 who die of preventable causes has dropped by
more than 50 per cent since 1990.

It noted, however, that in spite of the drop, the goal set in 2000 to
reduce the number by two-thirds has not been met.

The report found that while the lives of 48 million children had been
saved in the last 15 years, only 24 of the world’s 81 poorest countries
had cut the figure by two-thirds.

The number of illiterate Nigerians is estimated at 54 million, out of the estimated population of 180 million people, the federal government revealed on Tuesday.

The Acting Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Hindatu Abdullahi, presented the figures at the flag-off of the 2015 International Literacy Day celebration, and called for concerted efforts to improve the negative trend.

Recently, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) announced that over 757 million adults worldwide still lacked basic literacy skills, with about two-third of them being women, mostly from Nigeria and other third-world countries.
