As the campaign for 2027 presidential election kicked off, Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the ADC, has ignited a very troubling conversation by suggesting he would return fuel subsidy if elected.

While the suggestion is populist, like most people have described it, and appealing to the ignorant masses who do not understand the dynamics of macroeconomics, there’s need to educate the electorate against such proposition.

First, returning fuel subsidy means returning to square one of what successive governments have been trying to solve before Tinubu eventually damned all consequences to remove it.

If you return subsidy today, agreed their might be some temporary relief for the masses as the price of fuel might drop drastically, and with it the price of transportation and basic commodities in the short term, in the medium and long term, Nigeria will simply return to the Egypt that it is currently trying to exit.


What I mean is this…. After about 6 months paying subsidy, government finances will begin to strain. The money going to State Governments will reduce from what it currently is, and with time, States will start finding it difficult to pay salaries again.

Then in the long term, government will, all over again, begin the campaign for fuel subsidy removal to free up funds.

After some years, another president that is not Atiku will come and decide that fuel subsidy is no longer sustainable, again, and we will hear that evil phrase again - “subsidy is gone.”

Do I need to tell you what will happen again?

Fuel prices will skyrocket again.

Cost of transportation will balloon again.

Prices of basic commodities will start flying again.

And then what? We return to this current situation that Atiku is proposing to save us from; all over again.

So, before you jump to support Atiku, think it through.

The mistake you are going to make in jumping to support Atiku because he’s promising to return fuel subsidy is the same mistake that some Nigerians made in 2012 by joining political jobbers to protest against Jonathan when he removed subsidy during his presidency.

What later happened? The same person that led that protest became president 12 years later and removed the same subsidy that he led ignorant people to protest against.

So, before you support Atiku, ask yourself if you want Nigeria to keep running round a circle or to move on from every stage and hurdle we have crossed?

The effect of fuel subsidy removal is biting hard, admitted, but the solution is not to return it, rather we should continue to bear it until we achieve equilibrium. That way, we are sure we and our children are never going to have to suffer the effects of subsidy removal again.

But I'll disagree with you a bit on your assertion that price will reduce when fuel subsidy is returned. This means you don't understand Nigerian market. I bet you that no price will reduce despite subsidy in place.
Take for instance, charges by cab owners operating on CNG, despite the fact that CNG is highly subsidised, no Cab driver will tell you I'm operating on CNG, so Charges to Airport in Abuja for instance from Central Area is N10,000.00, he'll still charge you N20,000.00 or so being charged by those operating on gasoline.

Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc has released its audited consolidated and separate financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2025, to the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) and London Stock Exchange (LSE).

The Group reported profit before tax of N1.23trillion underpinned by strong growth in core earnings, with interest income and fee income increasing y-o-y by 23.2% and 25.9%, respectively.

The company in a statement said the performance reaffirm its capacity to generate sustainable earnings and builds on the momentum from 2024,

GTCO said it delivered a record profit of N1.27 trillion, driven in part by N517.5billion in fair value gains, which did not recur in 2025.

The group’s 2025 profit after tax came in at N865.75billion against N1.02trillion recorded in 2024. The profit after tax, it added, reflects the impact of recent fiscal policy adjustments to the taxation of investment securities, “notably withholding tax on short-term instruments. However, when normalised for this effect, underlying earnings remain robust, driven by growth in core operating income.”

“The Group continues to maintain a well-structured, healthy, and diversified balance sheet in all the jurisdictions wherein it operates a Banking franchise, as well as across its Payments, Pension and Funds Management business verticals. Total assets and shareholders’ funds closed at N17.8trillion and N3.4trillion, respectively. Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) remained very robust and strong, closing at 43.8%, likewise asset quality improved as evidenced by IFRS 9 Stage 3 Loans which closed at 3.4% and 5.0% at Bank and Group level in FY-2025 (Bank, 3.5%, and Group, 5.2% in December 2024). Cost of Risk (COR) also improved to 2.2% from 4.9% in December 2024. In specific terms, the Group’s loan book (net) grew by 12.4% from N2.79trillion as of December 2024 to N3.13trillion in December 2025. Similarly, deposit liabilities grew by 23.8% from N10.40trillion to N12.87trillion during the same period,” the statement reads in parts.

Commenting on the results, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc, Mr. Segun Agbaje, said: “Our 2025 result underscores the resilience and depth of our earnings capacity. Following a record 2024, which included significant fair value gains, our focus has been on strengthening the sustainability of our earnings by driving growth across our core banking and ecosystem businesses. The strength of our underlying earnings, despite a stronger Naira and tighter regulatory parameters, reflects the quality of our franchise and the discipline with which we execute our strategy. Importantly, this strong core earnings performance underpins our capacity to sustain and grow shareholder returns. Our record dividend payout this year is not only a reflection of our current profitability but also of our confidence in the Group’s long-term earnings potential. Looking ahead, we remain focused on scaling our ecosystem, driving innovation across our financial services platform, and delivering consistent, high-quality earnings that support superior value creation for our shareholders.”

Overall, the Group continues to post one of the best metrics in the Nigerian Financial Services Industry in terms of key financial ratios i.e., Post-Tax Return on Equity (ROAE) of 28.3%, Post-Tax Return on Assets (ROAA) of 5.3%, Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) of 43.8% and Cost to Income Ratio of 27.9%.
