The donation was a collective effort by the Assembly members to alleviate the financial burden on the family, particularly in light of the potential educational challenges the incident might pose. “We were deeply disturbed by what happened to Aminat, a student of Adams Yakubu Memorial School in Agege,” Obasa said. “After seeing her parents’ public appeal for help, we decided to step in and offer assistance.” In addition to the financial aid, the Assembly has pledged to provide a scholarship to ensure Aminat can continue her education uninterrupted. Lagos, Nigeria – A tragic incident in Okokomaiko, Lagos, in August 2013, led to the arrest of Sergeant Emmanuel Uyanweke, a police officer. The arrest was triggered by the death of Adams Bello, and Uyanweke was subsequently charged with involuntary manslaughter. The judge ordered the immediate release of Uyanweke, citing the prosecution’s inability to present any witnesses or evidence to prove their case. This is the third high-profile case in recent times where FPIL& has secured the release of individuals wrongfully detained. In November 2023, the organization successfully released another police officer, Enejo Gabriel, after a decade-long imprisonment.
