Nairaland GeneralA Snake Tried To Sneak Into My House Today! (pic) by lagosdaily(op): 4:29pm On Jul 25, 2025
You won’t believe what happened to me today.

As I was going about my usual morning routine, I noticed something moving strangely by the corner of the house near the back door. At first, I thought it was just a lizard or maybe one of those stray cats that like roaming around. But as I got closer — lo and behold, it was a SNAKE!

Yes, a real, live snake was slowly creeping its way toward my house like it knew exactly where it was going. 😨 It wasn't moving fast or trying to strike — it was acting sneaky, like it had done this before. I still don’t know how it got that far without anyone noticing.

I quickly alerted people around, and we were able to chase it off before it got inside. Thank God nobody was hurt, but I’m still shaken. Just imagine if someone had opened that door without knowing. The story could have ended very differently.

TravelUS Embassy Implements Two-visit Rule For Nigerian Immigrant Visas by lagosdaily(op): 8:39am On Dec 11, 2024
Starting January 1, 2025, the United States Embassy in Nigeria will implement a new process requiring all immigrant visa applicants to visit the Consulate General in Lagos twice during their application process. The revised procedure is designed to enhance efficiency and reduce delays in processing.

The announcement, shared on the embassy’s official X page on Tuesday, confirmed that applicants with interviews scheduled from the new year onward must comply with this updated protocol. The embassy emphasized that the first visit will involve an in-person document review conducted by consular staff. This step ensures that applicants have submitted all necessary paperwork and provides an opportunity to address missing documents or inconsistencies before proceeding to the next stage.

Only after completing the document review will the National Visa Center (NVC) schedule the final step: the visa interview with a Consular Officer. The embassy has clarified that skipping the document review will result in the visa interview being rescheduled, potentially causing significant delays in the applicant’s timeline.

The policy marks a shift in how Nigerian applicants engage with the visa process. By incorporating a pre-interview review, the embassy aims to streamline applications and improve the overall experience for both applicants and consular staff.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, described the platform as a vital step in strengthening the connection between citizens and the government. Designed to improve accessibility, transparency, and efficiency, the initiative aligns with the Vision 2052 agenda, a long-term development plan focused on innovation, smart infrastructure, and inclusive governance to drive economic growth and social progress.

Lagos, Nigeria’s economic powerhouse and a key player in Africa’s digital landscape, continues to solidify its role in the technology-driven economy. The state hosts over 60% of Nigeria’s technology-focused enterprises and boasts a robust network of accelerators, incubators, and partnerships with global tech companies. In 2023, Lagos-based companies secured more than $1.2 billion in funding, accounting for 75% of Nigeria’s total investments in technology-driven businesses. This growth demonstrates the dynamic nature of Lagos’ innovation ecosystem and its capacity to drive significant change across multiple industries.

The initiative also includes the Enterprise Architecture Project, a system designed to integrate data across government agencies. This approach will enable the use of artificial intelligence for service delivery, data-driven decision-making, and improved operational efficiency. Collaboration among policymakers, educators, and tech innovators is deemed essential for harnessing AI’s potential to shape the future of governance in Lagos.

The Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Tunbosun Alake, pinpointed the state’s proactive measures in embracing AI and digital technologies. He referenced the Lagos State Innovation Bill, which has created a conducive environment for AI research and incentivized technological startups. By integrating AI into school curriculums, Lagos is also preparing its younger generation to thrive in a technology-driven future.

Alake elaborated on the practical applications of AI in key sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, and transportation. Examples presented include predictive analytics to boost agricultural yields, AI-assisted diagnostics to improve healthcare outcomes, and data-driven transport solutions to enhance mobility across the state.

Tech expert Olugbolahan Olusanya commended the initiative, stressing the role of Lagos’ youthful, tech-savvy population in driving innovation. CrimeLagos Pastor And Wife Jailed 10 Years For N52m Fraud by lagosdaily(op): 1:53pm On Dec 07, 2024
Pastor Harry Uyanwanne and his wife, Oluwakemi Odemuyiwa, also known as Kristin Uyanwanne, have been convicted of financial fraud and handed a 10-year prison term by Justice Mojisola Dada of the Lagos State Special Offences Court. The couple’s conviction stems from their involvement in defrauding the late Mrs. Odemuyiwa Janet Adeola of a substantial sum of N52 million, a verdict that marks a significant step in the fight against financial crimes in Lagos.

Justice Mojisola Dada also ruled to shut down Temple International Church, the religious institution where the couple allegedly exploited spiritual affiliations to deceive and defraud unsuspecting individuals. The deregistration and closure of the church reflect the court’s stance against using religious platforms as a front for fraudulent activities.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) prosecuted Pastor Harry Uyanwanne and Oluwakemi Odemuyiwa with a seven-count charge that included conspiracy, theft, and obtaining money under false pretenses. Sunday Daji, representing the EFCC as the lead prosecutor, presented compelling evidence during the trial that demonstrated the couple’s scheme to sell Mrs. Adeola’s property. The property, situated at Plot 32, Block 9, Magodo Residential Scheme 1, Ikeja, was fraudulently sold to Mr. Kingsley Atere for the sum of N42 million.

Additionally, the prosecution presented claims that Pastor Uyanwanne and Oluwakemi Odemuyiwa unlawfully converted another N10 million belonging to Mrs. Adeola for their personal use. The charges were brought under the provisions of Section 1 (2) and (3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act No. 14 of 2006 and Sections 278 and 285 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria No. 11 of 2011.

After evaluating the evidence presented, Justice Dada concluded that the prosecution had proven the allegations against the couple beyond a reasonable doubt. On the first count of conspiracy, both Pastor Uyanwanne and his wife received a three-year prison sentence. However, Pastor Uyanwanne received an additional seven-year term for counts two to six, resulting in a cumulative 10-year sentence. Oluwakemi Odemuyiwa also got a three-year prison term for the first count but was acquitted on the seventh count, which brought her total sentence to six years.

In a notable decision, Justice Dada ordered the restitution of N31 million to the complainant, with a mandate for the convicts to pay this amount within 60 days of the judgment.

This verdict sends a powerful warning to those considering financial crimes and serves as a clear indication of the commitment of the judiciary to protect citizens from fraud while ensuring that justice prevails. The ruling also brings attention to the broader issue of fraudulent activities disguised under religious institutions, sending a strong message that the law will not tolerate such misconduct within religious or communal circles.

PoliticsCall For Increased Legal Expertise Within The Nigerian Police by lagosdaily(op): 7:25am On Nov 30, 2024
A call for an increased presence of legal professionals within the Nigerian Police Force has been made by Tosin Osasona, a legal expert and program officer at the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research/MacArthur Foundation Projects on Corruption Control. Speaking during a media town hall meeting organized by Partners West Africa Nigeria (PWAN) in the Southwest region, Osasona highlighted the pivotal role lawyers can play in ensuring the effective prosecution of criminal cases.

Osasona pointed to the Police Act 2020, which stipulates that only police officers who are qualified lawyers are permitted to prosecute cases in court. He questioned the practicality of this mandate, citing the small number of lawyer-officers compared to the significant workload they face. According to him, bridging this gap by recruiting more lawyers would improve the overall efficiency of case management and legal proceedings within the force.

To address these challenges, Osasona proposed assigning at least one lawyer to every police division. This measure, he argued, would lead to more robust investigations and prosecutions, ensuring that cases are handled with the rigor and precision required by the law.

On the topic of State Policing, Osasona urged policymakers to prioritize problem-solving, efficiency, and accountability over administrative control. He highlighted the need to strike a balance between effective law enforcement and safeguarding citizens’ rights, stressing that both goals are essential for building public trust in policing institutions.

The town hall meeting brought together journalists from across the region to explore the implications of the Police Act 2020 for the public and law enforcement. The discussions centered on fostering greater understanding of the law and its potential to transform police practices. Participants also reflected on the media’s role in ensuring police accountability and promoting responsible journalism in reporting issues related to law enforcement.

Partners West Africa Nigeria, through this initiative, aims to bridge gaps between the police and the communities they serve. By advancing legal literacy and facilitating dialogue, the organization seeks to cultivate a justice system that upholds equity, transparency, and accountability. This collaborative effort is expected to enhance trust and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the public, contributing to a more equitable society.

Foreign AffairsZimbabwe Targets Debt Relief At International Conference by lagosdaily(op): 8:45am On Nov 26, 2024
Harare, Zimbabwe – Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa hosted a high-level debt conference on Monday, outlining an ambitious plan to clear significant external debt and ultimately re-engage with international capital markets. The Southern African nation aims to overcome its longstanding financial challenges, including hyperinflation and multiple failed currency reforms, to secure a sustainable economic future.

Zimbabwe’s debt burden, amounting to 81% of its GDP, poses a formidable challenge. The government is currently negotiating a Staff Monitored Program (SMP) with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a crucial step towards implementing necessary policy reforms.

African Development Bank (AfDB) President Akinwumi Adesina emphasized the importance of the SMP, stating that it would pave the way for the bank to provide financial support and help mitigate the potential negative impacts of reforms. Adesina also highlighted the availability of funds from a special AfDB fund to assist with clearing Zimbabwe’s arrears.

Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube indicated that a clearer timeline for debt restructuring would emerge by mid-2025, contingent on securing bridge financing commitments from lenders. Analysts stress the critical importance of clearing arrears to unlock access to international financing and attract foreign investment.

Zimbabwe’s debt crisis has significantly hindered its economic development, preventing it from accessing essential IMF support. The IMF’s current stance is to provide only technical assistance due to the country’s unsustainable debt situation and outstanding arrears.

The government’s pursuit of an IMF SMP is seen as a strategic move to demonstrate its commitment to sound economic policies. However, missed deadlines for securing the SMP have limited the extent of IMF engagement.

Zimbabwe joins a growing number of African nations grappling with debt distress. While countries like Zambia, Chad, Ghana, and Ethiopia have made progress in debt restructuring, Zimbabwe’s unique circumstances, including a significant portion of its debt comprised of arrears and penalties, present additional complexities.

The government has engaged the services of Global Sovereign Advisory Company and Kepler-Karst to provide expert advice on debt restructuring. Despite limited payments to creditors, Zimbabwe remains hopeful for a sustainable resolution to its debt crisis and a path towards economic recovery.

The new regulations, announced by Olatubosun Alake, the Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, aim to create a transparent and secure environment for AI applications while positioning Lagos at the forefront of Africa’s technological revolution.

The development of these regulations is being carried out in partnership with the Federal AI Collective, and the framework is expected to be finalized by the first or second quarter of 2025. Alake explained that the state’s efforts to integrate AI into its infrastructure are part of a broader vision to embed cutting-edge technology into everyday life, with a focus on deploying AI responsibly and ethically.

“This initiative will set a clear direction for AI implementation across Lagos and provide a foundation for harmonizing our digital assets to support AI-driven innovations,” Alake noted. The regulations aim to guide not just the development of AI, but also its seamless integration with existing digital infrastructure to ensure effective and ethical usage across various sectors.

In addition to establishing robust regulatory policies, Lagos State is making significant investments in AI research and development. The Science Research and Innovation Council is channeling funds into local academic institutions such as the University of Lagos and Lagos State University. PoliticsLekki Textile SEZ To Boost Nigeria’s Economy, Create 25,000 Jobs by lagosdaily(op): 10:29am On Nov 25, 2024
Epe, Lagos – The Lekki Textile and Garment Special Economic Zone (SEZ), situated in the Eyin-Osa area of Epe, Lagos State, is set to transform Nigeria’s economic landscape. This ambitious project is expected to drive significant growth, both locally and nationally, by generating thousands of jobs and fostering infrastructure development.

Dr. Olufemi Ogunyemi, Managing Director of the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), disclosed on Friday that once the SEZ is fully operational, it will directly create up to 5,000 jobs. Additionally, over 20,000 indirect job opportunities will emerge, benefiting the surrounding community and bolstering the broader economy.

A major milestone in the project’s progression occurred when NEPZA distributed compensation to seven families from the Eyin-Osa community, who had contributed a total of 240.09 acres of land for the project. The compensation is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure local residents share in the development benefits.

Dr. Ogunyemi elaborated on the project’s multiple advantages, which include the creation of local employment, establishment of backward linkages, and the enhancement of surrounding infrastructure. He emphasized that the SEZ aligns with the Federal Government’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), which aims to attract foreign direct investment while fostering the development of host communities. This is consistent with the current administration’s focus on promoting industrial growth and economic diversification.

The project has also gained the support of local leaders, including Alhaji Muftau Shittu, President of the Eyin-Osa United Kingdom Development Association (EUKDA). Shittu acknowledged the community’s long-standing connection to the land and highlighted the challenges they have faced with land grabbers over the years. However, he expressed confidence that the successful resolution of land acquisition issues and the implementation of the SEZ will lead to long-term prosperity for the community.

With the completion of land acquisition and the distribution of compensation, the Lekki Textile and Garment SEZ is now poised for further development. The project is seen as a crucial step in Nigeria’s efforts to diversify its economy, stimulate industrialization, and create sustainable employment opportunities for its citizens.

CultureOba Of Benin Disowns Lagos Igue Festival Drama by lagosdaily(op): 10:20am On Nov 25, 2024
Lagos, Nigeria – His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, has firmly rejected any association with the planned dramatization of the Igue Festival organized by the Association for Cultural and Economic Renaissance of Edo (ACERE). The event, scheduled for Sunday, November 24, 2024, at the Muson Centre in Lagos, has drawn criticism from the Benin Palace for lacking authorization.

According to a statement released on Saturday, November 23, by the Chief Press Secretary to the Oba, Mr. Osaigbovo Iguobaro, the Palace expressed grave concerns over the event, describing it as an attempt to misrepresent one of the most sacred ceremonies of the Benin Kingdom.

The Igue Festival is deeply rooted in Benin’s cultural and spiritual traditions, serving as a renewal and thanksgiving ceremony performed exclusively under the direction of the Oba of Benin. The Palace considers the proposed dramatization a violation of these sacred customs and has taken legal steps to address the situation.

On Friday, November 22, the Benin Traditional Council secured a court injunction barring ACERE from using the Oba’s image or promoting the event without permission. The statement further clarified that the planned drama could distort the cultural significance of the Igue Festival, potentially misleading the public about its true meaning.

Members of the public were urged to approach claims of cultural representation with caution, particularly when such activities lack endorsement from the Oba or the Benin Traditional Council. Respect for the integrity and sanctity of the festival remains paramount, as unauthorized reinterpretations could dilute its historical and spiritual value.

The Igue Festival stands as a cornerstone of the Benin Kingdom’s heritage, symbolizing renewal, divine protection, and unity. Unauthorized events such as this, the Palace argues, threaten to erode its authenticity and spiritual significance.

Oba Ewuare II remains steadfast in his commitment to preserving the cultural and historical identity of the Benin Kingdom. This incident reflects the broader challenge of balancing tradition with modern interpretations, with the Palace determined to protect its heritage from exploitation.

The legal battle marks another step in ensuring that cultural traditions are upheld with the dignity and respect they deserve. As developments unfold, the Benin Kingdom’s dedication to safeguarding its history continues to resonate across the country.

Foreign AffairsMauritius PM Assumes Finance Minister Role For Economic Audit by lagosdaily(op): 1:26pm On Nov 23, 2024
PORT LOUIS, Nov 22 – Following his landslide victory in the recent elections, Mauritius Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced that he will also serve as finance minister to keep a close eye on the country’s economy.

Speaking in Port Louis, Ramgoolam, who was sworn in this month after leading his Alliance du Changement (ADC) coalition to secure 60 of the 62 seats in the National Assembly, said he would oversee an economic audit. “We are conducting a review of the economy to determine the extent of the damage caused by the outgoing government,” he told reporters.

This marks Ramgoolam’s return to the prime minister’s office after a 10-year absence. He previously served as prime minister from 1995 to 2000 and again from 2005 to 2014.

During his previous time in office, Ramgoolam launched initiatives aimed at reducing bureaucracy and simplifying taxes to help diversify Mauritius’ economy beyond its reliance on tourism, textiles, and sugar exports. Under his leadership, the island nation, with a population of about 1.3 million, has grown into a significant offshore financial center and has been ranked as the easiest place to do business in Africa by the World Bank.

Foreign AffairsSenegal President Faye’s Party Wins Majority In Parliament by lagosdaily(op): 7:55am On Nov 23, 2024
Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s party, Pastef, has secured 130 out of 165 seats in the country’s legislative elections, giving the president a clear parliamentary majority. The results, released on Thursday, enable Faye to move forward with his reform agenda, which focuses on creating jobs, lowering prices, and improving public services.

Faye, who assumed office in April following a landslide victory, dissolved the parliament in September after accusing the opposition of blocking key government bills. With the new majority, he now has the legislative support needed to pass crucial reforms.

Despite the political win, Faye faces the challenge of managing the country’s fiscal crisis. His government is currently in talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to restart a $1.9 billion program, which has been on hold since June 2023. Analysts warn that balancing public expectations with the IMF’s requirements for budgetary discipline will be difficult.

Pastef representative Amadou Ba said the election results were a strong vote of confidence, signaling broad domestic support for the government’s economic and social reforms.
