Significant structural reforms have been initiated by the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), involving major personnel changes and strict disciplinary actions aimed at addressing misconduct within its ranks. These measures are part of the ongoing drive to enhance leadership, promote accountability, and improve the professionalism of the force.

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun announced the redeployment of four senior officers to critical positions across the country. Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Suleiman M. Yusuf has been posted to Zone 9 in Umuahia, AIG Ahmed Ammani to Zone 1 in Kano, AIG Zachariah Fera to Zone 4 in Makurdi, and AIG Augustina N. Ogbodo to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos. This reshuffling follows the retirement of several AIGs and the promotion of DIG Ari Muhammed Ali to Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), overseeing the Department of Operations at Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Egbetokun tasked the newly posted AIGs with ensuring effective supervision and maintaining order in their respective zones. He called on them to demonstrate ethical leadership, address misconduct decisively, and reinforce public confidence in the police. The reforms align with broader objectives to uphold the force’s integrity and improve operational standards.

In a parallel move, the Police Service Commission (PSC) concluded a thorough review of 109 disciplinary cases during its plenary session in Abuja, resulting in the dismissal of 19 senior officers. Among those dismissed were 10 Assistant Superintendents, six Deputy Superintendents, two Chief Superintendents, and one Superintendent. Another 19 officers were demoted, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police, one Chief Superintendent, two Superintendents, two Deputy Superintendents, and thirteen Assistant Superintendents.

The PSC imposed additional penalties on officers found guilty of negligence or disobedience to lawful instructions, including severe reprimands and warnings. Notably, two Assistant Inspectors General were disciplined, with one receiving a reprimand and the other a formal warning.

Ikechukwu Ani, the Commission’s Head of Press and Public Relations, revealed that most dismissed officers are slated for prosecution by the NPF’s Legal Unit. Three cases were deferred for further investigation, while several promotion recommendations were approved and forwarded to the Inspector-General of Police for implementation.

A call for an increased presence of legal professionals within the Nigerian Police Force has been made by Tosin Osasona, a legal expert and program officer at the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research/MacArthur Foundation Projects on Corruption Control. Speaking during a media town hall meeting organized by Partners West Africa Nigeria (PWAN) in the Southwest region, Osasona highlighted the pivotal role lawyers can play in ensuring the effective prosecution of criminal cases.

Osasona pointed to the Police Act 2020, which stipulates that only police officers who are qualified lawyers are permitted to prosecute cases in court. He questioned the practicality of this mandate, citing the small number of lawyer-officers compared to the significant workload they face. According to him, bridging this gap by recruiting more lawyers would improve the overall efficiency of case management and legal proceedings within the force.

To address these challenges, Osasona proposed assigning at least one lawyer to every police division. This measure, he argued, would lead to more robust investigations and prosecutions, ensuring that cases are handled with the rigor and precision required by the law.

On the topic of State Policing, Osasona urged policymakers to prioritize problem-solving, efficiency, and accountability over administrative control. He highlighted the need to strike a balance between effective law enforcement and safeguarding citizens’ rights, stressing that both goals are essential for building public trust in policing institutions.

The town hall meeting brought together journalists from across the region to explore the implications of the Police Act 2020 for the public and law enforcement. The discussions centered on fostering greater understanding of the law and its potential to transform police practices. Participants also reflected on the media’s role in ensuring police accountability and promoting responsible journalism in reporting issues related to law enforcement.

Epe, Lagos – The Lekki Textile and Garment Special Economic Zone (SEZ), situated in the Eyin-Osa area of Epe, Lagos State, is set to transform Nigeria’s economic landscape. This ambitious project is expected to drive significant growth, both locally and nationally, by generating thousands of jobs and fostering infrastructure development.

Dr. Olufemi Ogunyemi, Managing Director of the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), disclosed on Friday that once the SEZ is fully operational, it will directly create up to 5,000 jobs. Additionally, over 20,000 indirect job opportunities will emerge, benefiting the surrounding community and bolstering the broader economy.

A major milestone in the project’s progression occurred when NEPZA distributed compensation to seven families from the Eyin-Osa community, who had contributed a total of 240.09 acres of land for the project. The compensation is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure local residents share in the development benefits.

Dr. Ogunyemi elaborated on the project’s multiple advantages, which include the creation of local employment, establishment of backward linkages, and the enhancement of surrounding infrastructure. He emphasized that the SEZ aligns with the Federal Government’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), which aims to attract foreign direct investment while fostering the development of host communities. This is consistent with the current administration’s focus on promoting industrial growth and economic diversification.

The project has also gained the support of local leaders, including Alhaji Muftau Shittu, President of the Eyin-Osa United Kingdom Development Association (EUKDA). Shittu acknowledged the community’s long-standing connection to the land and highlighted the challenges they have faced with land grabbers over the years. However, he expressed confidence that the successful resolution of land acquisition issues and the implementation of the SEZ will lead to long-term prosperity for the community.

With the completion of land acquisition and the distribution of compensation, the Lekki Textile and Garment SEZ is now poised for further development. The project is seen as a crucial step in Nigeria’s efforts to diversify its economy, stimulate industrialization, and create sustainable employment opportunities for its citizens.

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s party, Pastef, has secured 130 out of 165 seats in the country’s legislative elections, giving the president a clear parliamentary majority. The results, released on Thursday, enable Faye to move forward with his reform agenda, which focuses on creating jobs, lowering prices, and improving public services.

Faye, who assumed office in April following a landslide victory, dissolved the parliament in September after accusing the opposition of blocking key government bills. With the new majority, he now has the legislative support needed to pass crucial reforms.

Despite the political win, Faye faces the challenge of managing the country’s fiscal crisis. His government is currently in talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to restart a $1.9 billion program, which has been on hold since June 2023. Analysts warn that balancing public expectations with the IMF’s requirements for budgetary discipline will be difficult.
