I have been trying to understand something that surprised me after arriving in Lagos as an adult. Making new friends here feels harder than I expected. Not because people are unfriendly. Lagosians are warm, curious, and open. But because actually meeting people and seeing them again seems to depend a lot on where you live. From what I have observed so far: In places like Lekki, distance, traffic, and busy schedules make “let’s hang soon” quietly fade away. In denser areas, or neighbourhoods where people’s daily routines overlap more, friendships seem to form faster without much effort. This made me wonder if the challenge is not motivation or social skills at all, but proximity and routine. We have been testing very small, neighbourhood based meetups in Lagos just to see if being closer actually changes anything. It is mostly a learning exercise at this stage and we are still unsure what the right approach really is. Before going further, I would really like to hear from people who live this every day. Does where you live in Lagos affect how easy it is to make friends? If you have lived in more than one Lagos neighbourhood, which one felt easiest socially and why? Are there places where community happens naturally that outsiders often miss? For anyone who wants extra context on what we are exploring in Lagos, not required reading, this is the background page: background on what we are testing in Lagos I am genuinely more interested in being corrected than being right here. Curious to hear real experiences from Lekki, Ikoyi, Surulere, Yaba, VI, and anywhere else. |
