IHEDIOHA'S APPOINTMENTS: WHEN BUSINESS SUIT KEEPS GREEN CAP ASIDE By Ogu Bundu Nwadike, M.A The appointment of Dr. Reuben Abati as chief media aide to Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR the then President, raised a lot of expected dust. Abati had been a caustic, critical critic of Jonathan's. When the appointment was announced, Abati's first reaction was rejection. But at the end, he served as President Jonathan's media spokesman for four years. The explanation was that Jonathan was out to select from among the best in each critical area. Merit by verifiable performance became an overriding factor in that instance. Politics was kept at abeyance. On that note, let me welcome you to this edition. On Wednesday, April 17, 2019 the Imo State governor-elect, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, CON, KSC had an appointment with the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CEIC). It was a business meeting. And when he came out from his room he was dressed up in a sharp, corporate grey suit and red tie to match. No green cap! I bet many never thought he had a suit. Such are those he must have surprised and probably shocked by appearing without the characteristic green cap. Truth, however, is that the occasion was for business and not for politics. Hence, the business suit took centre stage over the political green cap. What I took home as lessons from that are many. When it's business be business-like and when it's politics be politics-like. Versatility and flexibility are fine ingredients of a good leader and good leadership. In the expected inevitable appointments of his cabinet, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha need not be told that it is a business affair more than a political affair. He needs no counsel to be business-like and not politics-like. A journey of one thousand miles begins with one step. That first step had better be moved rightly to guarantee moving the rest of the steps rightly. A wrong first step may result in every successive step being wrong. The fortunate thing is the immediate past Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives is versed in the art and science of corporate staffing. In one of my few short essays (I don't find time write as much as I should) which I entitled: "Ihedioha: Elective Politics is Taken But Appointive politics is Given", I reminded exactly what that self-explanatory title stated. I appeale to our people that are lobbying for appointments into the Ihedioha administration to understand that it was not a game of survival of the fittest as is the case with elective politics. Rather, appointive politics is at the prerogative of the offeror and not at the request of offeree. That is why the then President Jonathan would appoint a Dr. Abati when his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had a hallful of media professionals. But that too is why many felt that Jonathan's media team, led by Abati was successful in its four-year tenure. As already established, in making appointments into the RebuildImo administration, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha will need to keep his green cap aside and dorn his business suits. The appointments will be best if looked at more with business eyes than eyes of politics. There must be little or no room for sentiments or phillial considerations. It will not be an industrial training (IT) attachment for anybody that should be at the front line. Applications. Shortlistings. Interviews. Assessments. Appointments. That's the standard business procedure that should, directly or indirectly, be applied in making the appointments. Freewill, roadside, unempirical and unprocessed appointments that are based purely on politics may fail and disappoint, unlike appointments subjected to standard business procedure. With the established pedigree and antecedents of the incoming governor, he doesn't need to be told. He has proved at Commonwealth UK offices in London that he knows when to keep politics aside and allow business free reign. I believe my interest in this topic sources from the banters and bickers at some quarters over the inclusive-government policy of the governor-elect of which many non-PDP members made the Transition Technical Committee (TTC) and Inauguaration Planning and Handover Committee. Some feel that only Imo PDP leaders and members that "suffered" during the rigorous consultations and campaigns should be appointed into the incoming cabinet. However, with my allusion to President Jonathan and Dr. Reuben Abati as well as my reference to Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha and his business suit, I believe I have convinced and not confused anybody about the need to lobby for appointments with the appropriate instruments, and also that after lobbying, the lobbyist should wait patiently until the results are published. Pressure lobbying is not necessary because while elective politics is taken, appointive politics is given. Thank you. *Nwadike is a journalist author and public affairs analyst. The Joint Task Force(JTF) in Kano arrested a suspected Boko Haram member at the residence of the son of late former Head of State Sani Abacha, Mohammed, Daily Trust reliably gathered. It was gathered that the suspect who is a domestic aide of Abacha’s son at his residence located on Magajin Rumfa road at the Government Reserved Area (GRA) in Nasarawa local government area of the state was trailed to the house following the arrest of a suspected Boko Haram member in Maiduguri, Borno State. Security forces comprising men of the Nigerian Army and those of the State Security Service (SSS) went to the residence at around 1pm on Wednesday. A source close to the family told Daily Trust that the security operatives arrived the house at a time when the aides of Mohammed were saying their Zuhr prayers. “They came during the Zuhr prayers; in fact the people around in the house were observing the prayers. The security men alighted from their cars and about 10 of them who were well-armed entered the building and waited till the end of the four raka’at prayers. “After the prayers, they asked all the people around to lie down. In fact some security men who were among those people praying were also asked to lie down because they were in mufti. When the security men among those people that were lying down indentified themselves, the JTF members asked them to stand up,” he said. According to the source, the JTF operatives then brought out a suspected Boko Haram member who was handcuffed to identify the suspect in Mohammed’s house. “As the suspect was trying to identify the one in Mohammed’s house, he started running and jumped a fence but the security operatives arrested,” he said. However, when our correspondents went to the residence of Mohammed around 1pm yesterday, security guards stationed there denied knowledge of the military operation and the arrest of the suspected Boko Haram member. But a trader near the residence said he heard about the arrest of the suspect from a friend. “I was not around when the operation took place but I heard that a suspected Boko Haram member was arrested in the house yesterday (Wednesday),” he said. When contacted by telephone, Mohammed Abacha said nothing like that happened. Spokesman for JTF in Kano state, Captain Ikedichi Iweha, confirmed the operation but declined further information, saying investigation was still on. |
Former Federal Capital Territory Minister, Mohammed Abba Gana, has come under attack from northern political leaders for daring to canvass for four more years for President Goodluck Jonathan. The former minister incurred the wrath of the northern leaders when he advocated in Lagos on Monday that giving Jonathan another four years would not hurt the North in any way. Abba-Gana, who was flanked by a lawmaker from Taraba State, had argued that giving Jonathan a second term would enable the North to use the period to groom a successor to the President. But the Secretary General of the Northern Elders' Forum, Professor Ango Abdullahi and a second Republic lawmaker, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, dismissed Abba-Gana's suggestion for a second term for Jonathan as ill-conceived, pointing out that the President did not deserve it. According to the two northern leaders, Jonathan has failed to tackle myriad of challenges confronting the nation, thereby showing that he lacks the capacity to move Nigeria forward. They said another four years for Jonathan would push the country into the abyss and Nigerians cannot afford to take such a risk, pointing out that Abba Gana was not qualified to speak for the north, going by his antecedents. Junaid Mohammed and Ango Abdullahi dismissed Abba-Gana as a politician who had always fraternised with the wrong political group for his personal interest and asked him to speak for himself and leave the North alone. In separate interviews with Vanguard, Abdullahi and Mohammed insisted that Abba-Gana did not have the pedigree to serve as an advocate for the north and should not be taken seriously by Nigerians. Abdullahi said: "Even in Borno where Abba-Gana hails from; he has never been part of the mainstream political arrangement and for that reason, he lacks the locus standi to speak for Borno and the North. "Abba-Gana is more of a businessman than a people-oriented leader from the north. Having failed to advance any reason why the north should wait for another four years to enable Jonathan to run again, he should hide his face in shame. "His advocacy is an insult to the north and a product of compromise," the former ABU Vice Chancellor said. Adding his voice to the debate, Mohammed described the former minister as someone who lacked clout and challenged him to show one thing he had achieved in his state of origin to qualify him to speak for the entire northern Nigeria. Mohammed said, "Abba-Gana was one of the errand boys when we were in active politics and should not be taken seriously because he has no political clout even in Borno State. "If the former minister insists he should speak for the north, he should be kind enough to demonstrate his political relevance in Borno, his home state or shut up forever. He does not really merit any response from right-thinking northerners". But while cautioning the northern elite on their utterances, Abba-Gana said if the North had produced between eight and nine heads of state and presidents, with poverty as a proof and underdevelopment, then, four years of Jonathan would not kill them. Abba Gana noted, "some people in the North want Jonathan to come back and some don't want him to return. But allowing Jonathan another four years will not take away anything from us. We've had between eight and nine heads of government. But what do we have to show for it? Poverty and underdevelopment! "So, if their person did not bring development to them, another four years of Jonathan will not cause any havoc. "The North needs the four years to plan, learn, relate better with other parts of the country, work harder, talk less and groom a leader that will unite the nation and tackle the challenges facing the country." |
The attention of the Civil Liberties Orgnaisation (CLO) has been drawn to the recent deportation of Nigerian citizens from Lagos state to Onitsha, Anambra state, few weeks ago and the comments that the nefarious action has so far generated from among Nigerians. During this period, too, we have received phone calls, series of text messages and mails from concerned Nigerians who feel that CLO has abdicated its responsibilities in voicing out against such cruelty and abuse of our grand norm, the 1999 Constitution and human rights. CLO has also been accused of keeping quiet because it is an infraction “committed by its friends” in power. Such schools of thought reason that if it were a case involving the PDP, CLO and, indeed, other CSOs would have woken up to condemn the action. While we do not want to join issues with those making such spurious accusations, we make bold to state that CLO as a Pan-Nigerian and foremost human rights group, has since its inception in 1987, stood on the side of the people and will continue to do without fear or favour. On the issue on the table, CLO notes with utter dismay that the action of Lagos state government in deporting Nigerian citizens from Lagos state to Onitsha and elsewhere in the country where they were allegedly “dumped” like refuse is grossly reprehensible and condemnable. The action is not only a total breach of the 1999 Federal Constitution, the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights and the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights, among others but a huge infringement on the human rights of the victims. It is criminal and dehumanising. Section 41 (1) of the 1999 Constitution grants Nigerian citizens the right to free movement without molestation in the land. It is also important to note that Lagos, apart from being a state, wears another identity status of a former Federal Capital Territory. And so, every Nigerian has a stake in Lagos state just like Abuja. However, CLO is not, at all, shocked at what Fashola government did with respect to this deportation matter because his government is a government that has no human face but can be best described as an anti-poor government and a government that is dictatorial, lawless and absolutely inhuman. When people who stay outside Lagos sing praises for his regime, residents of Lagos state who are the victims and who wear the shoes and know where they pinch them, do know that his government is despotic and lacks conscience. As at today, we cannot remember any segment of the Lagos population that is not lamenting the atrocities of the Fashola regime against its members. At the last count, the following groups of Lagosians have protested against Fashola’s inhumanities, war against the armless citizens and wickedness. They include but not limited to the workers, medical doctors, students, okada riders, taxi drivers, traders, hawkers, bus drivers, keke riders and human rights activists. How many poor people’s children can study at the Lagos state University today? Can taxi drivers buy new cars from other sources other than government’s and get them registered as cabs in Lagos state? Do medical doctors know the types of drugs that are supplied in public hospitals in the state ? The so-called Fashola buses in Lagos state now park human beings like Julius berger trucks worse than the Oshodi-Osho buses. In view of the above, iIt is the position of the CLO that developments without human faces and which overlook human rights are undesirable projects. In the same manner, Yoruba citizens are said to have been deported to their states of origin while Yoruba communities like Makoko, Badiya and Isefun etc have also been willfully evicted from their God-given residences without alternative options. The war against okada riders, taxi drivers, traders and now keke riders in the state has only multiplied social crisis and hardship for the citizens instead of solving them as government had falsely made us to understand. Car, laptop and phone snatching has returned to town while kidnapping experiences which were never entertained here has begun to obtain. We no longer understand what security and social crises these anti-people policies are meant to resolve while, in the opposite, increased hunger, poverty, prostitution and frustration mount We have also decided to make this statement in order to dissociate the civil society community from the sponsored position of certain government apologists masquerading as civil society groups who rose to support the ungodly action of the government in the aftermath of the widespread national condemnation of the act. The group painted a picture that tend to absolve the government from this crime against humanity, our constitution and human rights. CLO condemns this action in its entirety and urges the Lagos state House of Assembly to urgently intervene in the matter and call Governor Fashola to order. Also, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) have copious roles to play in ensuring that human rights and the law are not violated with impunity by governments and powerful persons in the society. Human rights and the law are abused because perpetrators are not brought to book. CLO enjoins the NHRC to begin to document incidences of human rights violations in Nigeria with a view to bringing the perpetrators before the International Criminal Court where they will not manipulate the process so that these impunities can abate and citizens’ rights and our law respected. We insist that as one of the leading stakeholders in the struggle against authoritarian regimes, this is not the kind of government that we fought to install. Lastly, violation of human rights will continue until institutions and individuals entrusted with the responsibilities to check lawlessness and abuses live up to their duties and punish the offenders in line with the provisions of the law. Nobody is above the law and shall never be. CLO enjoins all men and women of good conscience, civil society organizations, the Federal government and its agencies and the State House of Assembly and the leadership of ruling party in the state to condemn this crime and take urgent steps to redress this ugly trend. Apologies to the victims and adequate compensations by the Lagos state government can help reduce rising tensions and found peace. Thanks. Signed Ibuchukwu Ohabuenyi Ezike , Executive Director, Civil Liberties Orgaisation. |
