Pregnant woman dies two days after husband’s brutality

A pregnant woman, Mrs. Funmilayo Ajibola, died last Wednesday in Badagry, Lagos State after being allegedly brutalised by her husband, Kola. The 30-year-old housewife had been a victim of domestic abuse for years before she died on the fateful day.

Funmilayo’s cousin, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said Kola, a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, was a jealous husband who always suspected his wife’s movements. She said, “Kola is a very jealous husband. My cousin changed her phone lines more than 15 times throughout their six years marriage lasted because anytime Kola saw a strange number on her phone, he would destroy the SIM card.

“Sometimes, if she came back late or went out, he would beat her. There was a time she visited her father and when she got back home late, Kola told her to pick between him and her father.
“According to a young girl that lives with the couple, on Sunday night, Funmilayo received a call from her maternal uncle and when Kola saw the number, he started beating her. He did not even listen to her explanation.”

The cousin said when the beating got out of hand, the landlord intervened and took Funmilayo to his flat. The landlord was said to have told Funmilayo to go back to her husband’s apartment believing that his anger would have subsided but Kola was said to have continued to beat her.PUNCH Metro learnt that although the deceased did not die after the beating, she started exhibiting strange symptoms before her death.

Her cousin said, “Although I wasn’t there, the young girl that lives with them told me that Funmilayo was unconscious for a while, making Kola to become scared.“Kola rushed her to a nearby hospital where she started to vomit blood. The hospital refused to admit her because they owed the hospital some money.

“Kola then took her back to the house and invited an auxiliary nurse to come and attend to her but her health continued to deteriorate.”
The nurse was said to have given the deceased some injections and bags of drip. “The young girl that lives with them told me that on Tuesday, Funmilayo ate some rice but vomited it soon after. When her health did not improve, the nurse told Kola that she could no longer locate her vein,” our source said.

It was learnt that when Funmilayo died on Wednesday, Kola took her corpse to the Badagry General Hospital mortuary and told the attendant that his wife died of pregnancy complications.
He was said to have promised to return but later fled. Our correspondent learnt that neighbours immediately informed members of Funmilayo’s family who then came to 5, Ilufe Street, Ibereko Bus Stop, Badagry where the couple resided.

It was learnt that when all efforts to trace Kola failed, his younger brother, was arrested by policemen attached to Badagry Police Division.

At the station, Kola’s brother revealed his location and policemen immediately arrested him. A police source told our correspondent that the 33-year-old suspect admitted beating his wife.
“I am not a doctor but there were bruises on the corpse and there is no doubt that Kola beat her up and he has confessed. He however said he did not kill her,” he said.

Funmilayo’s cousin however berated the police on how the investigations were being handled. She said, “Kola has been beating Funmilayo for a long time to the extent that the landlord had issued them a quit notice for fear that he might kill her.

“Police should have invited the landlord for questioning as well as the nurse that was treating Funmilayo. Also, the case should have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department by now,” she said. When contacted the spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, said the command would ensure that a thorough investigation was carried out.

She said, “Investigation will be done professionally. The Badagry Division has to conclude preliminary investigations before transferring the case to the SCID.“Also, Kola will be charged with murder because all evidence points to him. It’s a clear case and there will be no cover up.

“We are waiting for approval from a magistrate court before going ahead with the autopsy and once all things are in order, he’ll be charged to court.” Punch

Reps Suspend Farouk Lawan, Recommends Otedola’s Coys For Fraud Investigations

https://ireports-ng.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/housereps-460x250.jpg

The House of Representatives at a special plenary session today suspended its embattled chairman of the ad hoc committee on fuel subsidy payments, Farouk Lawan even as the lawmakers unanimously revoked the clearance of Otedola’s companies and directed anti-graft agencies to probe them for collecting foreign currencies running into millions of dollars without using them for same purpose.

By virtue of the decision of the House, Lawan will henceforth cease to be the Chairman of the House committee on Education and chairman of the ad hoc committee on fuel subsidy management.

Otedola’s companies listed for fraud investigations are Zenon Petroleum and Gas as well as Synopsis Enterprises Ltd.
The House said the two companies collected about $300 million USD for the purpose of importing petroeleum products in 2010 but never did. The companies were earlier cleared of any wrong doing by the probe report after Lawan was allegedly induced with bribe.

The suspension of Lawan which will stand untill investigation into his bribery allegation is concluded was hinged on Order 10, Rule 71, sub 4 of the House’s rules. The House also mandated the Ethic and Privileges Committee to carry out independent investigations on the allegation and report to it within two weeks even as it expressed its support for the police which is investigating the matter.

Though Lawan could not attend the special plenary session because he was still being detained by the police, the motion for his suspension was however moved by the Chief Whip of the House,Hon Ishaka Mohammed Bawa who said the House cannot pretend not to be concerned about the $620,000 bribery allegation against Lawan, with a warning that the scandal was already affecting the image of the entire House.

He called on the House reverse itself on the exoneration of Zenon Oil from the list of indicted companies by recommending that the EFCC and other anti-corruption agencies begin investigation into the collection of forex by the firm for the importation of petroleum products that were never imported.

In his words “I urge the House to rescind the Resolution of the House of Tuesday,April 24,2012 on the Recommendation(xxix) items (5) and (6) of the Ad-Hoc Committee’s Report . Delete namely Synopsis Enterprises Ltd and Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd from the list of those companies…they should be referred to the relevant ant-corruption agencies with a view to verifying what they used the forex collected for.”

The motion which was reinforced by the Chairman, House Rules and Business, Hon Sam Tsokwa and Minority whip, Hon Samson Osagie was overwhelmingly voted for by all members when the Speaker asked for vote on it.

The House also passed a vote of confidence on the leadership of Tambuwal and gave him a thunderous applause before rising to close the session.

PoliticsChairman Of House Committee On Narcotic &financial Crimes Denies Farouk Lawan by Lanquart(op): 3:10pm On Jun 12, 2012
These are not the best of times for Hon. Farouk Lawan who is enmeshed in a monumental bribe for clearance scandal. Lawan, who is accused of extorting a bribe of $600k from Chairman of Zenon Oil, Femi Otedola, to clear his company from culpability in the fuel subsidy probe which committee in the House he chaired had contradicted what he said on Sunday by Monday. On Snday he denied ever collecting any bribe, but by Monday, after Otedol had given an interview on Thisday stating his side of his story, Lawan changed his story and alleged that he did collect the bribe but that he informed the chairman of the House Committee on Narcotics and Financial Crimes of the attempt to bribe him via a letter.

But when the Chairman of the House Committee on Narcotic Drugs and Financial Crimes, Hon. Jagaba, was contacted to confirm receipt of Lawan’s letter, he denied receiving any letter to that effect.

“I am not part of the Ad Hoc Committee on Monitoring the Fuel Subsidy and to the best of my knowledge, I did not receive any such letter of complaint about an attempt to bribe the subsidy committee. I am not aware of anything concerning that transaction (bribery) and my committee is not in possession of such a letter,” he told THISDAY in a telephone interview Monday.

Jagaba said that while he could not hold brief for Lawan, it would be important for Nigerians to look at the issue on its merit.

According to Jagaba, the subsidy report unveiled monumental corruption in the management of the subsidy scheme and should not be undermined because of the bribery allegation against the committee.
Politics"What Is Happening In Northern Nig Is Ethnic & Rel Cleansing" - Italian Minister by Lanquart(op): 4:53pm On Jun 11, 2012
ROME (AFP) – An Italian minister on Sunday condemned “ethnic and religious cleansing” in Nigeria following attacks on churches claimed by Islamist group Boko Haram in which three people were killed and dozens injured.

“Christian blood has again been spilt in Nigeria according to a now clear plan of ethnic and religious cleansing,” said International Cooperation Minister Andrea Riccardi, the founder of a Catholic charity active in Africa.

“The international community can no longer look on at this massacre of innocent people without intervening,” Riccardi said.

Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi also condemned the violence in a statement saying the reports had evoked “great pain and indignation.”

“I reaffirm Italy’s maximum engagement in protecting and promoting religious freedom and in confronting the challenge of terrorism,” he said.

Earlier on Sunday a suicide bomber blew his car up outside an evangelical church in the central city of Jos, causing the building to collapse entirely.

In the second attack, gunmen opened fire during a service in the northeastern town of Biu also in an evangelical church.

Boko Haram’s insurgency has killed more than 1,000 people since mid-2009, especially in Nigeria’s Muslim-dominated north.

Our company is a registered security company in Nigeria by the corporate affairs commission. We are also registered in some African Countries, but our corporate head office is in Nigeria.
We are into Car Tracking/security, Sales and installations of CCTV Security System and other digital security products etc.We are in partnership with a Canadian company who supplied all our products. We have agreed with this Canadian company to train 17 of our staff on how to handle some of the equipments they supplied to us.
Our Company is only interested in sending three staff for this training mainly because of the cost of the training per head and other expenses we cannot afford at this time. We have decided to use the remaining 13 slots to help some Nigerians who want to migrate to Canada as well as to raise some money to sponsor the three people we are sending from our company.
This opportunity is open to both males and females but NOT for those seeking for family visa.
THE PROCEDURES:
(1).Any interested person must be up to 21 years
(2). Must own a bank account that is been used for the past three months
(3). Each interested person must pay for the training fee which is US$1000.This money is refundable if the visa is not issued for whatever reason.
(4).The refund will be made two weeks after the training on presentation of evidence of rejection from the Canadian embassy.
(5).Bearing in mind of what happened recently when one fraudster defrauded some people with Canadian visa; we will acknowledge receipt of this US$1000 and pledge to refund it if the person is not issued with Canadian visa. This must be put in writing and sign by us
(6).When the visa is issued to any applicant, the person shall pay us N100,000 for our effort before collecting his/her international passport.
(7). Each applicant shall pay the official Canadian visa fee of US$70 by him/her self. This US$70 is non refundable irrespective of whether the visa is issued or not.
(cool. Each applicant will be presented as our staff and we will issue our company ID card to them.
(9).All the 15 names shall be sent next month to enable the company send the invitation letters
(10).Once again, no one is asked to pay any money upfront to us. The US$1000 is for the training fee (which is refundable if the visa is REFUSED), Our own N100,000 will be paid to us when the visa is issued while the US$70 is the official visa fee payable to the Canadian embassy.
It becomes necessary for me to be too open and more elaborate with this information because of the watchdogs in this traveling section. I would have name the company in Canada and even our own company here but that will not augur well for our reputation and also for administrative and security reasons

Please if you can’t afford the above requirements, please don’t bother to come to our office or call. Also don’t bother to call or come to tell us to do everything and when the visa comes out you, pay.
Interested person(s) should call 08069002604,Email:skybasedintegratedconcerns@yahoo.com for details.

Thanks a million times "Justwise" for the insult. But a million name calling from you will not stop some players that are traveling this week and the others that will also travel after them.
In as much as I don't want to join issue with you in particular, but with reference to my well advertised visa procurement both here in Nairaland forum and in the print media,I can vividly remember your only complain then was that the visa fee was on the high side and some other people also pleaded that I should bring the fee down which I dutifully explained to them why the visa fee was that amount because I believe in "what is worth doing is worth doing well"
It is unfortunate that you are now terming it fraud because I refused to yield to your demand of (bringing the fee lower). All the same I thank you for having time to contribute to my thread, whether good or bad,I appreciate.
But for your information,we have succeeded in getting more than 12 visas for people since then from different embassies here in Nigeria and those whom their visas were denied for one reason or the other,we have successfully returned their international passports to them and some that made deposit,we have also refunded their monies back to them.
I stand to be proved wrong
Nevertheless,I like the watchdog role you are playing in this forum but that will not make you assume that any visa issue is a scam.

Nigeria's Kano rocked by explosions
Breaking news

Multiple explosions have rocked Kano, the biggest city in northern Nigeria.

The BBC's Yusuf Yakasai in the city says there is pandemonium with people running all over the place.

One of the blasts is believed to be at the police headquarters and an AP reporter says a large plume of smoke can be seen over the city.

The situation and extent of the damage is not yet clear. Islamist militants have been behind a recent campaign of violence in the mainly Muslim north.

A journalist for the AFP news agency reports hearing what sounded like about 20 explosions coming from two neighbourhoods in the city.

The Islamist Boko Haram group, whose name means "Western education is forbidden", wants to establish Sharia (Islamic law) in Nigeria and started to stage drive-by shootings in 2010 on government targets in its base in the north-eastern city of Maiduguri.

It has stepped up its attacks in 2011, attacking the headquarters of the police and the UN in the capital, Abuja.

In recent weeks, southerners, who are mostly Christians or animists, living in the north have been the targets of deadly attacks.

Reports claim Boko Haram bomber, Kabir Sokoto, rearrested

An unconfirmed report has it that fleeing suspected Boko Haram bomber, Kabir Sokoto, has been rearrested at the Nigeria-Chad border.

Rumours in Abuja and a number of posts on Twitter said he was caught in unclear circumstances.

However, the spokesman for the Nigeria Police Force, Mr. Olusola Amore, said he had not been briefed.

He promised to issue a statement if the story was found to be true.

However, some bloggers on Twitter expressed doubts that the real suspect was caught, especially as no picture of the alleged bomber has ever been released by the police.

Sokoto, who is suspected to have masterminded the Christams Day 2011 bomb blast at the St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Madalla, Niger State, escaped from a police van last week while he was being taken to his residence for a search.

President Goodluck Jonathan had on Wednesday reporttedly given the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, 24 hours to produce the suspect or be sacked.

The Minister of Police Affairs, Mr. Caleb Olubolade, told newsmen after the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja on Wednesday that Ringim had been queried over the suspect’s escape.

A number of senior police officers, including the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Mr. Zakari Biu, have been reportedly placed under house arrest and suspended for involvement in the incident.

More details later.

Gunmen Storm Airforce School in Kano, Kill Many

altArmed men suspected to be terrorist of the Boko Haram sect were reported this morning to have struck in Kano State killing several soldiers at Air Force Comprehensive School, Kwa, Kano.

Details are still sketchy but sources said several military personnel were killed, and many others injured.

Armed soldiers and plain clothes security had sealed the area.

A doctor who had treated some of the injured said to his kowledge four soldiers had been killed.

The most telling aspect of this incident is that a neighbourhood group had began scouring the area after the incident and on a raid of a suspicious building had found audio tapes of Mohammed Yusuf the late founder of the Boko Haram sect a strong indicator of who was behind the attack.
