The boy who plastered posters of Ronaldo onto his bedroom walls had been applauded by Real Madrid’s fans when PSG played at the Santiago Bernabeu in the Champions League in March.

There was even a degree of appreciation for his two goals, which left Madrid on the brink of defeat. This was at least a preview, they thought, of the player that would soon belong to them.

Those expectations have been swelling for years, the protracted nature of this saga creating a longing at Real Madrid and a fanfare in the media.

The hype made Mbappe joining Madrid feel both inevitable and, at the same time, absolutely essential.

The club have been obsessed by Mbappe. The pandemic restricted spending but there has also been method in their restraint, a building up of funds for the biggest signing of all.

Dinamo Zagreb head coach Zoran Mamic has resigned after being sentenced to four years and eight months in jail for a multi-million euro fraud involving Luka Modric's move to Tottenham and other player transfers.
The Croatian champions announced Mamic's departure late Monday as the club prepare to face Spurs in Thursday's Europa League last 16 return leg. Tottenham lead 2-0 after last week's first leg in London.

Mamic's exit came after the Supreme Court upheld a 2018 ruling by a local tribunal but reduced his initial prison sentence by three months.

"Although I do not feel guilty, as I said earlier if the verdict becomes final I will accept it and quit as Dinamo coach and sports director," Mamic said in a statement.

Assistant coach Damir Krznar will replace Mamic as both manager and sports director.

Mamic, 49, wished the club "all good luck and success".

In 2018, Mamic, his brother and former Dinamo Zagreb boss Zdravko Mamic as well as a former club director and a tax inspector were all found guilty of graft which, according to the indictment, cost Dinamo more than 15 million euros ($18 million) and the state 1.5 million euros.

The cash was embezzled through fictitious deals related to player transfers, notably two international stars -- Real Madrid midfielder Modric and defender Dejan Lovren.

They both appeared as witnesses during the trial providing details of their transfers from Dinamo.

Modric testified over the details of his 2008 transfer from Dinamo to Tottenham Hotspur. From there he joined Real Madrid in 2012.

Both Lovren and Modric were initially charged with perjury after testifying at Mamic's trial, but the charges were later dropped.

At the time Zdravko Mamic was sentenced to six years and six months in jail and the Supreme Court upheld the verdict.

He fled to neighbouring Bosnia just ahead of the verdict.

Earlier this month another trial involving the Mamic brothers and three others embezzling millions of euros from Dinamo Zagreb opened before a local tribunal.

Inter Milan's Chilean international midfielder Arturo Vidal is set to undergo clinical surgery for a left knee injury, the Serie A club announced on Thursday.
"Arturo Vidal will undergo surgery tomorrow (Friday) for meniscal pain in his left knee," Inter Milan said in a brief statement.

The 33-year-old former Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen player could be sidelined for up to a month, according to Italian media reports.

Vidal, who has scored two goals in 30 games since moving to Inter from Barcelona last summer, looks set to miss their next three league games against Torino, Sassuolo and Bologna before the international break.

Antonio Conte could recover Vidal for the match against Cagliari on April 11 or Napoli the following week.

Inter are top of the league with a six-point lead on AC Milan as they target a first league title since 2010 with champions Juventus a further four points back in third.

Joachim Loew's decision to quit after the European championships, which ends on July 11, gives the German football association (DFB) "the necessary time to calmly appoint a successor," said its president Fritz Keller.

The Bayern Munich boss is the logical choice having been Loew's assistant coach when Germany won the 2014 World Cup.

The 56-year-old knows the German FA inside out, having spent three years as sports director from 2014 until 2017, before joining the coaching staff at Bayern two years later.

Despite having initially been appointed caretaker coach in November 2019, Flick's reputation was boosted after he led Bayern to the Champions League title last season.

However, he has played down interest in German football's top job.

"I know what it means to work at FC Bayern and see no reason to think about anything else," he said.

The 62-year-old is the architect of RB Leipzig's stunning rise from the fifth tier of German football.

Lothar Matthaeus, who captained West Germany to the 1990 World Cup triumph, sees Rangnick as the ideal candidate.

"He is available. He is someone who can build something," Matthaeus, 59, told Sky on Tuesday.

Rangnick ruled himself out of the running but he is currently out of work and open to new employment having most recently been head of soccer at Red Bull.

On paper, Rangnick has an impressive record but his reputation as a reformer could put him in potential conflict with Germany team director Oliver Bierhoff.

Rangnick's obsession with detail could also rub Germany's stars the wrong way.

The vacancy has probably come too soon for the 33-year-old who is regarded as one of Germany's brightest rising star coaches.

Nagelsmann is under contract at RB Leipzig until June 2023 and is building a reputation having already steered them to the Champions League semi-finals last season.

He has ruled himself out of contention, saying he is "excited to see who will follow in the footsteps" of Loew, but as the poster boy of German football, his name will be in the mix.

The 58-year-old is head coach of the national Under-21 side and highly regarded by the German FA.

According to Loew, Kuntz does "excellent work" and has "a very good approach to the team".

Kuntz was part of the Germany team which won the European championships in 1996, and he won the Under-21 European championships as coach in 2017.

However, there are concerns he Kuntz lacks the necessary experience to manage Germany's star players.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp would be the dream choice for most German fans and the DFB's top brass.

But the 53-year-old who led Liverpool to their first Premier League title for 30 years almost immediately said he was not interested in replacing Loew at the moment.

"I have three years left at Liverpool, that's a simple statement, a simple situation," he said at a press conference. "You sign a contract and you normally try to stick to that contract don't you?"

His time might still come. World Cup winner Rudi Voeller said recently that Klopp was "one of the few coaches who can decide for themselves when they want to become national coach".

Inter pull clear of second-placed Milan who were held 1-1 against Udinese on Wednesday with champions Juventus a further four points adrift with a game in hand.

Former Croatia coach and Dinamo Zagreb star Zlatko 'Cico' Kranjcar died on Monday at the age of 64, the national football federation (HNS) said.
"Kranjcar, legendary Croatian footballer and coach ... has died in Zagreb," the federation said in a statement without providing further details.

The Zagreb-born Kranjcar was hospitalised last month due to liver problems, the state-run HINA news agency reported.

Kranjcar played for Dinamo in the 1970s and 1980s before joining Rapid Vienna, where he won the Austrian championship twice.

After retiring as a player Kranjcar returned to coach Dinamo, leading them to the league and cup double in 1996 and 1998.

He served as national team coach from 2004 to 2006 but was sacked after Croatia failed to make the knockout phase at the World Cup.

Kranjcar later had an 18-month spell in charge of Montenegro and stints with Iran's Sepahan and Al Ahli of Qatar.

He briefly took over Dinamo again in 2016 and then Iran's Under-23 side in 2018.

Kranjcar's son Niko, 36, is also a former international footballer.

Atletico Madrid's Wanda stadium on the eastern side of the Spanish capital was transformed into a huge vaccination centre Thursday where firemen, police and civil protection officers got their first jabs against the coronavirus.
Around 1,000 people were invited on Thursday to be immunised with the AstraZeneca vaccine at the 68,000-seat venue.

"I will continue to be careful and keep my distance, always wear a mask, but at least I will be more relaxed," 53-year-old police officer Maria Teresa Teriza-Hernandez told AFP.

The makeshift centre in the home ground of the current leaders of the Spanish league will have the capacity to vaccinate between 350 and 400 people an hour once it is fully up and running.

"The goal is to vaccinate as many people as possible. This is a mass vaccination" to reach all firefighters and police officers, the head of the vaccination centre, Victor Escudero, said.

Vaccinations are also being carried out at neighbourhood public health centres.

Those being inoculated at the stadium are "professionals on the front lines" of the fight against the pandemic, the head of the regional government of Madrid, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, said during a visit to the stadium.

"We therefore consider it necessary to give them the vaccine as soon as possible," she added.

In addition to police, firefighters and other civil protection workers, teachers from public and private schools will also soon be vaccinated at Wanda and the new Isabel Zendal Hospital which opened in December.

The venue was built in record time as a surge of infections was straining Spain's public health system.

But it has sparked controversy because it cost more than twice the original budget, with critics dismissing it as an extravagant vanity project by Madrid's regional government.

So far, some 1.2 million people have been vaccinated in Spain since the start of the immunisation campaign which began just after Christmas, with care home residents first in line along with their carers.

The government aims to have 70 percent of Spain's population of around 47 million vaccinated by the end of summer.
