"Jonathan And Lamido" - By: Sam Nda-Isaiah on November 18, 2013 via Leadership Newspaper I hope no one is duped by the face-off between President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State being packaged as the president’s own version of the war against corruption. Last week, Governor Lamido accused President Jonathan of doing nothing about the lead he (Lamido) gave him: a minister close to him collecting $250 million bribe from an oil company. In less than 24 hours, the EFCC had swooped on two of the governor’s sons over the alleged laundering of about N10 billion. I am certainly not holding brief for Sule Lamido and his children. They may, in fact, be guilty; but would the president have given a different directive if the governor had not been such a trenchant opponent to him? If Lamido had not been in the Amaechi-led NGF and had been in the Jang-led NGF, would the prognosis have been different? Or, let’s put it this way: why is it that, in spite of all the hoopla about Stella, the EFCC still does not know the way to the aviation minister’s house, even though her bulletproof cars run on excess aviation fuel? There have also been several reports on the petroleum minister, without any consequences whatsoever. During some of the investigations, it was the president himself that sometimes begged the National Assembly not to “embarrass” the ministers by inviting them to their committees. It is too early for us to forget the president’s contributions to the House of Reps fuel subsidy probe. This is what happens when a leader has completely lost credibility. Governor Lamido may well be guilty of the massive corruption charges as alleged, but Nigerians are reading other meanings into it. And, by the way, where is the report of the fuel subsidy scam involving the son of another PDP chieftain? Nigerians have not yet forgotten that the PDP chairman’s son and his colleagues have been charged in court over the theft of N304 billion. It’s now over 20 months, and nothing is heard about the case anymore. The case will probably never come up again until Bamanga Tukur starts thinking of conducting a free and fair presidential primary. And lest we forget so soon, what were the president’s contributions in catching the pension robbery kingpin, apart from what Nigerians already know? The president’s double standard did not just surface today. Evidence of it started showing even before he became president. Does anyone still remember Vincent Ogbulafor? He was the chairman of the PDP when President Umaru Yar’Adua had become sick and incapacitated. Jonathan was acting president then but Ogbulafor insisted that the PDP would still zone its presidential slot to the north. Before anyone knew what was going on, some funny charges had been slapped on Ogbulafor’s face for an offence he was said to have committed seven years earlier. Of course, Ogbulafor was forced to resign. The PDP chairman might have been guilty, but he was not the only guilty party there. It is very hard to continue to trust the current leadership of the ruling party with power. And we are all witnesses to the quality of governance under Jonathan. Any group that sees power as an advantage for self-promotion and breaking the law must never be allowed near power. The Appeal Court has just passed a judgement declaring former governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola as the authentic secretary of the PDP. But Jonathan doesn’t want that and has quickly got Oyinlola suspended from the party. Nobody should tell me that it was not Jonathan who did it. In their confusion, they said Oyinlola could not be reinstated because the court judgement had not been served the PDP headquarters. But the same PDP headquarters was aware enough to rush to the Supreme Court to appeal the Appeal Court’s judgement. That’s certainly not the kind of leadership you want to watch over your nation. If many Nigerians are forced to either accept Jonathan’s accusation or Lamido’s allegation, more would rather believe the Jigawa State governor because the president has tons and tons of corruption issues he has been protecting. It may not be true, but that is the perception the president has given himself. Nigerians now know how important to the nation the man who occupies the presidency is. Next time, we must insist that only a leader fit for a country as important as Nigeria emerges. |

Here is No. 1… 1. Always be willing and eager to help others with an introduction or your time. And do no expect anything in return.Reminds me of a quote from another master networker, Harvey Mackay. He said, “My Golden Rule of Networking is simple: Don’t keep score.” The profile of Nozad is sprinkled with names of successful entrepreneurs he has backed and advised. What’s missing is what happened in between those meetings. He is constantly having conversations with young people, some still in school, and helping them along. They may or may not end up working at startups. They may or may not raise funds in companies he could invest in. He doesn’t think about it that way. He calls this “one way love. “The currency of real networking is not greed but generosity.” Keith Ferrazzi Also note that Nozad went to the key contacts—to the influencers’ homes and to the schools the potential entrepreneurs attended. As Scott Stratten said to me in an interview recently, “Are you going to where your customers [or key contacts] are or just sitting and hoping they come to you?” 2. Be proud of where you came from and share that with others. It shows honesty and builds trust. Nozad doesn’t represent himself as anything but a guy who sold rugs in Palo Alto and then started investing in startups. He talks openly and eagerly about his family’s background in Iran and the remarkable story of how he got to Silicon Valley.People who Nozad sold a rug to ten years ago, and had no contact with since, still felt like they knew and were close to him. That is the social power you gain when you are willing to be completely human and authentic. “If people like you they’ll listen to you, but if they trust you they’ll do business with you.” -Zig Ziglar 3. Compliment the achievements of those around you. And do it with a smile. We all know that awkward feeling that comes with a superficial or flat compliment. It means well, but lands with a thud. Nozad deftly avoids that by focusing on what someone has accomplished and tying it to who they are deep down. He tells one entrepreneur, “Starting things is in your DNA.” And with that, he nails exactly what this guy is proud of, and makes him feel good about it. His phrasing has so much more genuine punch to it than if he’d just said, “You’re a great entrepreneur.”People yearn for validation, to feel important, to be recognized for their effort and achievements. You can build great bonds by looking for those things that people are proud of and pointing it out. 4. In conversations search for a common ground. It may take a while, but there is surely something to bring you closer. This is perhaps the trickiest area for all of us. You meet someone at a cocktail party, and you know just enough about them to know you could both benefit from connecting and then… blah You struggle to get beyond the “Any vacations coming up?” chatter. Instead Nozad Googled his early rug clients so he knew how to guide conversations. Now his own network of friends is wide enough that usually he can quickly make a personal connection with people simply by suggesting a common friend. 5. Use your Rolodex wisely and only for the right person at the right time, for the right cause. Several of the top venture capitalists who do deals with Nozad rarely hear from him. That’s very intentional. He knows the importance of valuing other people’s time. People notice when you waste their time. They respond to your emails when you honor their time. 6. Make sure you understand what the person you want help from has to gain from it. Nozad understands motivations. He knew the venture capitalists he sold rugs to were always hunting for undiscovered treasures: talented entrepreneurs no one else had yet spotted. The entrepreneurs, likewise, were eager to mingle with potential backers. That was Nozad’s “in.” He knew he could bridge both worlds. 7. Don’t create walls between your personal and professional lives. It is one big network of people. Nozad starts most conversations very personally. How are the kids? How have you been? It is subtle, disarming, and endearing. Spend more time listening than you do talking. And you do that by asking questions and listening with genuine interest. I’ve seen this trait in other successful networkers. They don’t exhaust themselves being slightly different personalities in work, family and social settings. They are just as personally helpful and at ease to a work colleague as they are to a family friend. OK, so let me make this easy for you; here’s your $50 million cheat sheet summary: 1. Give. 2. Be real. 3. Compliment. 4. Find commonality. 5. Use your network sparingly. 6. Think WIIFT-What’s In It For Them. 7. Be authentically YOU, always. “The richest people in the world look for and build networks, everyone else looks for work.” -Robert Kiyosaki It’s well known that 80% of business opportunities are filled through networking. |

Below is Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon’s reaction on Prof. Festus Iyayi death which happened on Tuesday by a car crash in Governor Idris Wada’s convoy on his way to a meeting in Kano to call off the ongoing ASUU strike . . . “The grand initiation of Professor Festus Iyayi is a lancinating loss of another stentorian voice, against retrograde and prebendal forces of primitive mercantilism. That he passed through transition on matters pro bono publico, bears eloquent testimony to our state of dystopia. Such is the evanescence of life. Its all vanitas vanitatum.” This grammar is enough to make ASUU call of the strike. |

The three agencies were asked to return today, having failed to provide the committee with documents on the procedure for their recruitment. The Nigeria Immigration Service provided conflicting documents, and failed to follow due process in its recruitment. A document showed that 2,005 people were employed in 2011, with another putting the figure at 2,550. Both documents, however, did not record the qualifications of the new employees. The House committee was shocked when Secretary to the Board of CivilDefence, Fire Service, Immigration and Prison Service Board, Sylvanus Tapgun, the body responsible for recruitment into those agencies, said he did not know the bank account number into which the revenue generated from the sale of application forms was lodgedHe was also unable to tell the committee the company handling the collection of the forms, and failed too to give the number of forms sold. Tapgun also claimed to be unaware of the House Representatives’ resolution urging the NIS to stop collecting fees for the employment forms. "I did not place the advertisement; it was done by my predecessor. I don't know the account number. I resumed office on September 18, 2013. I read the minutes of the last meeting of the board in August and it was not about recruitment but promotion in Immigration and Prison Services," he said. It was also discovered that the NCS flouted the rules by recruiting 5,595 in 2011 without approval from the Head of Service, according to the Permanent Secretary, Career Management Service, Ezekiel Oyemomi. Also, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was granted a waiver to recruit 801 workers by the Federal Character Commission (FCC), but recruited1,146. Source: The Nation.
