If you reside in Lagos by now you must have seen “Call 112” on all police vehicles, ambulances, fire trucks etc. Yes, that’s one of the Lagos State toll free emergency hotlines.

On the first of November, a Lagosian shared a story about his experience with the toll-free emergency number and the LASEMA response unit.

He narrated in detail how his house caught fire and he called 767 for help. He also drew attention to how professional the 767 agents responded to him on the phone.

The LASEMA Response Unit staged an emergency response simulation exercise at the Lekki toll gate today.

For those of us that were scared when we saw the recovery operation, fear not! It was a simulation.
The simulation was carried out in a bid to improve response times and evaluate the agency’s ability to execute its response plans.


It involved an accident between a tanker and a single vehicle with two casualties trapped inside the vehicle. The casualties were extracted and conveyed from the scene within five minutes with the help of an RRS air ambulance and an LRU mobile intensive care ambulance (MICA).

The simulation which is about the first of its kind disrupted movement in that area but it’s absolutely necessary to carry out such every so often in a bid to validate the emergency preparedness of the agency and to continually improve service delivery to Lagosians.

No two accident scenes are the same which means there will be differences in the way the emergencies are managed.Simulations like this will provide the wealth of experience required to manage various emergency scenarios.

Disasters may not give any form of notice so let’s all have the Lagos State toll free emergency numbers 112 & 767 on speed dial.

The Agency received a distress call at about 12.45am on 16/10 /2016 regarding a fire incident of a Story building Shopping Complex opposite Presbyterian Church Yaba.

This prompted immediate activation of the Agency's Emergency Response Team to the incident scene along with the Lagos State Fire Service, Nigerian Police Force from Sabo and Adekunle Police Stations.

Investigation conducted by the Agency's ERT at the incident scene revealed that the fire started from one of the shop at the back side of the complex where wears, shoes, bags were burnt leaving 94 shops out of 201in the complex destroyed. Owners were alerted and came on time manage to salvage some of their wares while the presence of the police team prevented lurking miscreants from looting tne salvage products. No life was lost in the incident.

The Agency ERT was involved in salvaging some items, shops baricaded with iron bars using concrete cutter for fire service to gain access to the affected areas and also prevented further escalation. A total number of 117 shops were savaged by the emergency responders which include Fire Service from Ilupeju and Alausa Fire Station.

The General Manager LASEMA Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu noted that the fire outbreak was exacerbated by the highly inflamable materials such as wears stored in the shops, as well as Air conditioners and Generators with fuel in the market caused occasional explosions as the fire raged the shops. Hee also said that emergency responders also had problem of accessibity to some of the shops due to iron bars used as security doors for the shops.

The General Manager however advised market owners to ensure that their members are continuously sensitized on fire prevention and safety as well as ensuring that electrical appliances are put off after the close of business everyday to avoid incident such as this.

In another fire incident, Agency along with the Lagos State Fire Service also responded to the fire outbreak at at about 6.57 a.m at No. 83 Abeokuta Street Ebute Metta received a distress on the same day, This prompted the immediate activation of the Agency's ERT to the scene of the incident.

According to investigation carried out by the Agency's ERT at the scene of the incident, the cause of the inferno remained unknown. However, further investigation conducted by the Agency's ERT revealed that the fire started from one of the rooms in the three bedroom flat of the first floor of the two storey building.

No life was lost but two male adults who sustained minor injuries while trying to put out the fire and immediately treated by LASEMA Medical Team.

The fire also destroyed some house hold materials in one of the room and the sitting room of the flat but was prevented from spreading to other part of the building by Lagos State Fire Service men

A container truck fell beside a Pathfinder jeep, crushing the drive's side. No casualty was recorded. The LASEMA response unit used the Goliath fork-lift to lift the container truck up a little at first in-order to make it easier for the Tow-truck to remove the jeep before the Goliath lift the Container off the road to a place.

The Agency received a distress call regarding a lone accident on Iddo bridge at about 2.15 pm on Sunday 9th Octocber 2016. On arrival at the scene of the incident, the Emergency Response Team of the Agency discovered a grey coloured Hyundai ix 35 with registration number SMK 485 CM which skided off the Eko bridge by Iddo Terminus and fell on a man who died immediately.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle was suspected to have been snatched at gun point with five suspected armed persons. Three of the suspected armed robbers died immediately; one escaped with injury while the fifth person was taken to the Hospital for treatment by LASAMBUS. The dead bodies ( three suspected armed robbers and one other person identified as a mechanic named Nwamba) were handed over to SEHMU and were subsequently taken to the Mortuary, while vehicle was towed to Denton Police State Ebutte Metta by the Agency.
Items found on them include : One locally made double barrel pistol with five live cartridges; one laptop;GSM phone and a dollar note
The General Manager LASEMA, Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu advised Lagosian to always be security conscious all the time and further said that proper investigation would be carried out by the Nigerian Police Force on the incident.

July the 8th, 2016 was – as most Fridays – a TGIF for me. After wading through the late evening traffic from Lekki on the Third Mainland Bridge, I was grateful to be finally home, located a few minutes’ walking distance from the Deeper Life Church in Gbagada. While looking forward to a blissful and restful weekend, I had a quick shower after my evening meal and headed for my bedroom. I must have started snoring before my head hit the pillow!

About 12.40 a.m., I was startled out of deep sleep by the loud ringing of my cell phone. I was startled, not because of the call, but because my phone was usually either on mute or switched off before bedtime. But God had a purpose for the oversight. My younger brother, on the other end, was talking rapidly, “Mama is very sick. She’s is not feeling well at all, she is behaving somehow and there is no vehicle to take her to the hospital”. I honestly don’t recall them, but I know that I asked him a few incoherent questions and made quite a number of unintelligible statements as I jumped out of bed! How was I to get across town from Gbagada to Ogba at that time of the night? I made a few distressed phone calls, one of which was to my cousin, a medical doctor with NIMASA who had a permanent ambulance attached to him. His phone rang endlessly, no response.
It was now about 1.10a.m., and both my brother and I were getting frantic. Through it all, I repeatedly muttered desperate, silent prayers under my breath. Suddenly, I remembered the Lagos State Toll Free Emergency Hotlines 112 and 767! Without a second thought, I dialed 112 and almost immediately, a female voice answered, “Lagos 112, what’s your emergency?” In a calm voice, I hurriedly explained the situation to her. I ended my anguished plea with, “Please, don’t let my mum die”. I gave her a clear description of my mother’s College Road residence.
“I am going to contact the ambulance service now. There is no guarantee there will be one available, so I advise you make an alternative arrangement to take care of your mother. However, I will call the ambulance service” She said and the phone went dead.
I looked at the wall clock, 1.35a.m. Now, more confused and despondent and still muttering silent prayers under my breath, I started pacing about my home. I attempted my cousin’s number again, still no answer. Another call came in from my brother, saying that our mother was now unconscious and motionless. As my mind raced in several directions, a myriad of horrible pictures flashed through it.
When, at 2.05 my phone rang again, I said to myself, “I hope the worst hasn’t happened!” It was a private number! Who could that be at this time of the night? I held the phone slowly to my ears.“Mr. Archibong? This is Lasambus – the Lagos State Ambulance Service. We are at the junction of Coker and College roads. Please, how do we get to your house?” “Wow! Seriously?” I actually said that! “Please drive down Coker Street, my brother will be standing outside the house waiting for you.” My joy was boundless; joy mixed with pleasant surprise. I instructed my brother to wait outside for the ambulance. By the time he called me back at 2.25a.m., they were already on their way to the hospital!

Glory be to God! Today, my mum is alive and well because our very own Akinwunmi Ambode is gradually and strategically developing a world class mega city with services and amenities comparable anywhere in the world!
Thank you, your Excellency Akinwunmi Ambode, for putting together a working and effective emergency response system that saved my mum from untimely death; and making us at Fegocowosa very proud. Time will not permit me to spotlight other areas where Ambode’s developmental projects are springing up all over the state.

The trainee firefighters being put through their paces to respond faster and better to emergencies within the state. Just one more part of the efforts of the LASEMA RESPONSE UNIT and hence the LASG to improve the lives of her residents.

The LASG is committed to the safety of lives and livelihood and this is evidenced in the continuous training and retraining of the emergency response team to ensure speedy response and recovery from all emergency cases.

The Executive Governor Of Lagos State, His Excellency Gov Akinwunmi Ambode today Commissioned the Helipad Built at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital for emergency services. This is part of the saving lives initiative of the Governor and its first of its kind in Lagos and Nigeria. On the 23rd May 2016, the LASEMA Response unit was also commissioned by the Vice President prof Yemi Osinbajo and the LRU have saved numerous lives and intervened in several emergency situations within the Lagos Metropolis since inception There is certainly no doubt about the fact that this administration cares about the safety of lives and livelihood in Lagos. #LagosCares. Earlier today, a mother called the TOLL FREE EMERGENCY LINE 112 to call for help for her child who was having a convulsion and in need of medical attention.


The LRU Emergency Response Team swung into action immediately, and administered first aid treatment.


Thereafter, the child was taken to Oshodi Primary Health Center for follow up treatment.

At about 11:25pm on Friday 15th July 2016, a good Lagosian called the TOLL FREE EMERGENCY LINE 112 to report an emergency situation about a container that fell on a Ford Edge SUV at Toyota bus stop Oshodi Apapa Expressway.

The LASEMA Response Unit (LRU) Team swung to action immediately.

LASTMA officials and the Nigeria Police Force were also at the incident scene to ensure effective recovery operation.

Investigation carried out by the LRU team at the scene revealed that the loaded container fell on the Ford Edge Car with registration number JJJ 283 DE as a result of busted tyres and crowded tankers parked on the road side.

The incident did not claim any life as the driver of the Ford Edge Car was rescued and unhurt from the incident, he was the only occupant of the vehicle.

The LRU team also recovered the vehicle from beneath the container and towed it to a safe place.

About a month ago, The LASEMA Response Unit (LRU) was launched by the Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo. Present at the launch were His Excellency Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State Dr Idiat Adebule, The Governor of Kebbi State, His Excellency Alhaji Atiku Bagudu, the Honourable Minister of Works, Power & Housing Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), the LASEMA General Manager Mr Michael Akindele amongst others.

In addition to the trucks, power bikes and heavy duty vehicles, the newly invigorated response unit (LRU) took delivery of fire trucks to address domestic fire incidents and a well-equipped Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA). The MICA is staffed with highly trained paramedics and will be dispatched to emergency situations where patients require a higher level of care than a regular ambulance can provide.
Professional trainings were also conducted for the entire team of Paramedics and firefighters within the past month and the team has handled a number of emergencies within the Lagos metropolis.

We can’t stop emergency situations entirely but we will work on a robust, effective and timely response.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) Response Unit (LRU) was launched on Monday 23rd May 2016 by the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Professor Yemi Osinbajo who ably represented the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari. Also present were His Excellency Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State Dr Idiat Adebule, The Governor of Kebbi State, His Excellency Alhaji Abubakar .A. Bagudu, the Honourable Minister of Works, Power & Housing Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), the LASEMA General Manager Mr Michael Akindele amongst others.

Despite the light shower, the turn out for the launch was impressive as the various MDAs were ably represented.


Eight years ago, a Command and Control Centre was launched. This Command & Control Centre hosted the 767 & 112 emergency lines and ever since then, Lagosians have been able to speak to trained agents 24/7. These trained agents respond to emergency calls and immediately escalate to the concerned agencies for swift action.


The Lagos State Government is however working to expand this good work of the previous administration by upgrading the technology and expanding the service to reduce response times.

Within emergency medicine, the ‘golden hour’ refers to the period that prompt intervention will prevent death.

Too many people lose their lives and sources of livelihood, not from the initial incident, but from the lengthy response times due to inadequate resources.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) is empowered by law to coordinate all the first responder activities through the LASEMA Response Unit (LRU) which was launched on Monday 23rd May 2016 by the Vice President.

This Unit will respond to emergencies out of its specially designed dispatch center- “the first in Lagos, first in Nigeria” as said by the Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo at the launch.

This is no sheer feat as the Lagos State Government is working very closely with the private sector; OEMs, technology providers, business process outsourcing companies and emergency training organizations to support the operations for a sustainable and efficient service.

Lagosians are implored to cooperate with the Government by calling only in cases of GENUINE emergencies. Every time what is known as a hoax call is placed, resources and attention are diverted from someone who may be genuinely in need.

The emergency numbers still remain 767 & 112.

We can’t stop accidents and crime entirely but we can work on a robust and effective response. Lagosians should feel safe at work, at rest and at play; It is indeed evident that Lagos Cares.
