Uganda has last week signed a bill that further bans homosexuality. According to CNN, a man was even burned to death for being gay shortly. The bill’s original 2009 version, named “Kill The Gays,” went as far as calling for the death penalty for certain homosexual acts; that provision was shelved following international furore. Under its latest iteration, anyone who conducts marriage ceremonies for same-sex couples faces seven years behind bars. Failure to report homosexual activity to police is also criminalized. Doctors who treat gays, landlords who rent them property and those suspected of being LBGTQ are subject to five-year prison terms under the bill. When Prof Wole Soyinka said recently that Nigeria is a country at war, many thought he was just exploring his literary prowess. Latestnignews observed that happenings in parts of Northern Nigeria have further led credence to his genuine concerns. At the moment, Thousands of Nigerians living in border villages in Borno State have fled as a result of the ongoing military operations targeted at routing insurgents from the area under the emergency rule. Funny enough, these Nigerians are running to a land where hunger is in-charge... “Most of the residents of border villages of Borno have fled to Niger. About 2,000 people from Abadan, Malam Fatori and other villages are now refugees in Difa, Niger Republic,” a top security officer told Punch on Sunday. The security source said the Joint Military Task Force was on the trail of members of the Boko Haram sect, who were dislodged from the Sambisa Game Reserve and other camps on Thursday in Borno State. It was learnt that residents of Maiduguri and other communities far from the border, who did not want to be caught in the cross-fire had also fled with their belongs. Hope these innocent people will be compensated at the end of the military onslaught? Source: latestnignews..com/2013/05/see-how-people-are-running-from-nigeria.html

One of Nigeria's veteran guitarist, Fatoke Abiodun, was on Tuesday sentenced to three years imprisonment for drug trafficking at the Federal High Court, Lagos. The 62-year-old Abiodun was a guitarist with King Sunny Ade, Nigeria's foremost musician. Prior to the judgment, defence counsel, Mr. Bayo Onifade, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy as Abiodun is a husband of three wives with 12 children. Abiodun had pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful exportation of 1.575kg of cocaine during his trial in February 26, 2013. Justice S. Seidu sentenced him to three years imprisonment with effect from the date of arrest. He said, “The appeal of the defence counsel has been taken into consideration and the fact that the convict pleaded guilty as charged without wasting the time of the court was also carefully considered.” It would be recalled that Abiodun was apprehended by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on January 1, 2013, at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos. Abiodun, who played guitar for music star, King Sunny Ade, for over three decades, was caught while attempting to board an Air France flight to Italy. During a search, two parcels of cocaine weighing 1.575kg were found hidden in the false bottom of his luggage. Abiodun had blamed poverty for his predicament. He said: “My music career is a sad story. I played for King Sunny Ade for 30 years before I was unceremoniously retired in 2007 without severance benefit. I was unprepared for it and I saw the bitter side of life. This is my first time of trafficking drugs. I did it out of frustration because at my age, I could not provide for my family.” Source: latestnignews..com/2013/05/sunny-adepopular-musician-sentence-to.html#more

President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria today declared a state of emergency in three Nigerian states of Adamawa, Yobe and Borno. The president made the declaration during a nationwide broadcast carried live on national television. In imposing the state of emergency today, President Jonathan wielded extra-Ordinary measures by invoking Section 305, Sub section 1 of the 1999 constitution of Nigeria. However, Mr. Jonathan stated that regardless of the state of emergency imposed today, the governors in the three states will remain in office. The president had earlier met with the governors in the Aso Rock Villa late afternoon shortly before the the broadcast. ADDRESS BY PRESIDENT GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN, GCFR ON THE DECLARATION OF A STATE OF EMERGENCY IN BORNO, YOBE AND ADAMAWA STATES IN ORDER TO RESTORE PUBLIC ORDER, PUBLIC SAFETY AND SECURITY IN THE AFFECTED STATES OF THE FEDERATION MAY 14, 2013 Dear compatriots, 1. It has become necessary for me to address you on the recent spate of terrorist activities and protracted security challenges in some parts of the country, particularly in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Kano, Plateau and most recently Bayelsa, Taraba, Benue and Nasarawa states. These unfortunate events have led to needless loss of lives and property of many innocent Nigerians including members of our security forces. 2. The recent killing of security operatives by a cult group in Nasarawa state is particularly condemnable. I have directed that no effort or expense be spared in identifying and bringing to justice all those who had a hand in the killing of the operatives. 3. The activities of insurgents and terrorists have been reprehensible, causing fear among our citizens and a near-breakdown of law and order in parts of the country, especially the North. We have taken robust steps to unravel and address the root causes of these crises, but it would appear that there is a systematic effort by insurgents and terrorists to destabilize the Nigerian state and test our collective resolve. 4. Since I returned to the country after cutting short my visit to South Africa and aborting a planned state visit to Namibia, I have received detailed briefings from our security agencies. These briefings indicate that what we are facing is not just militancy or criminality, but a rebellion and insurgency by terrorist groups which pose a very serious threat to national unity and territorial integrity. Already, some northern parts of Borno state have been taken over by groups whose allegiance is to different flags and ideologies. 5. These terrorists and insurgents seem determined to establish control and authority over parts of our beloved nation and to progressively overwhelm the rest of the country. In many places, they have destroyed the Nigerian flag and other symbols of state authority and in their place, hoisted strange flags suggesting the exercise of alternative sovereignty. 6. They have attacked government buildings and facilities. They have murdered innocent citizens and state officials. They have set houses ablaze, and taken women and children as hostages. These actions amount to a declaration of war and a deliberate attempt to undermine the authority of the Nigerian state and threaten her territorial integrity. As a responsible government, we will not tolerate this. 7. Previously, we adopted a multi-track approach to the resolution of this problem through actions which included persuasion, dialogue and widespread consultation with the political, religious and community leaders in the affected states. 8. We exercised restraint to allow for all efforts by both State Governors and well-meaning Nigerians to stop the repeated cases of mindless violence. 9. Yet, the insurgents and terrorists seek to prevent government from fulfilling its constitutional obligations to the people as they pursue their fanatical agenda of mayhem, mass murder, division and separatism. 10. While the efforts at persuasion and dialogue will continue, let me reiterate that we have a sacred duty to ensure the security and well-being of all our people and protect the sovereign integrity of our country. Therefore, we shall, on no account, shy away from doing whatever becomes necessary to provide the fullest possible security for the citizens of this country in any part of the country they choose to reside. 11. We have a duty to stand firm against those who threaten the sovereign integrity of the Nigerian state. Our will is strong, because our faith lies in the indivisibility of Nigeria. 12. Following recent developments in the affected states, it has become necessary for Government to take extraordinary measures to restore normalcy. After wide consultations, and in exercise of the powers conferred on me by the provisions of Section 305, sub-section 1 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, I hereby declare a State of Emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states. 13. Accordingly, the Chief of Defence Staff has been directed to immediately deploy more troops to these states for more effective internal security operations. The troops and other security agencies involved in these operations have orders to take all necessary action, within the ambit of their rules of engagement, to put an end to the impunity of insurgents and terrorists. 14. This will include the authority to arrest and detain suspects, the taking of possession and control of any building or structure used for terrorist purposes, the lock-down of any area of terrorist operation, the conduct of searches, and the apprehension of persons in illegal possession of weapons. 15. The details of this Proclamation will be transmitted to the National Assembly in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution. But in the meantime, let me make it clear that within the purview of this Proclamation, the Governors and other political office holders in the affected states will continue to discharge their constitutional responsibilities. 16. I urge the political leadership in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states to co-operate maximally with the Armed Forces and the Police to ensure that the exercise succeeds. We call on the citizenry to co-operate with our security agencies to ensure a return to normalcy within the shortest possible time. 17. I am again approaching our neighbouring countries, through diplomatic channels, as done in the recent past, for their co-operation in apprehending any terrorist elements that may escape across the border. 18. Nigerians are peace-loving people; these sad events perpetrated by those who do not wish our nation well have not changed the essential character of our people. 19. I want to reassure you all that those who are directly or indirectly encouraging any form of rebellion against the Nigerian state, and their collaborators; those insurgents and terrorists who take delight in killing our security operatives, whoever they may be, wherever they may go, we will hunt them down, we will fish them out, and we will bring them to justice. No matter what it takes, we will win this war against terror. 20. I am convinced that with your support and prayers, we shall overcome these challenges and together, we will restore every part of our country to the path of peace, growth and development. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Source latestnignews..com/2013/05/breaking-news-jonathan-declares-state.html |

For many days, rescue workers plowing through the site of last month April’s building collapse in Bangladesh had the grim task of pulling out body after body of dead people, some already decomposing. But on Friday, as the operation wound down, they miraculously found a survivor. Crews digging through the rubble heard a woman’s soft voice pleading for help: I’m alive. Please rescue me... According to Capt. Ibrahim Islam, a Bangladeshi military official outside the site of the recovery operation, they extracted the woman in an operation that last about one hour. Crowds converged to pray for the woman as rescuers rushed her to a hospital. Her name is Reshma. And she’s the last person to come out alive, several days after they started removing dead bodies. The rescue of Reshma comes more than two weeks after a nine-storey-building in a Bangladesh complex housing factories full of garment workers caved in, becoming South Asia’s deadliest industrial disaster. bloggernaija: EFFC SHOULD FIRST OF ALL ,PROBE ITSELF .yes. |
The Peoples Democratic Party, Lagos State chapter, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to probe the activities of the Babatunde Fashola-led administration in the state. The party said its call was based on “massive corruption” in the administration of the state under Fashola. In a statement by the party, the state PDP Chairman, Chief Tunji Shelle, made the call on Sunday, after a church service to mark his birthday. He said, “Recently, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, talked about plans by House committees to begin the probe of ministries in the state. “This move, we learnt, has been vehemently opposed by Fashola and the leadership of the Action Congress of Nigeria.” Shelle said there was a need for the government to give statistics on projects it was handling and allow the public to have access to such information to know if its claims were true or false. He said, “What Fashola, a so-called progressive governor, has done is to warn his commissioners never to speak to the media on the state projects as well as activities in their ministries.” Shelle also challenged Fashola to explain the utilisation of the over N23bn realised by the state Security Trust Fund. “Recently, Chairman of Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, was kidnapped. There has been many kidnappings recently of foreigners and these incidents were kept away from the public by the state” he said. “We are worried that the continued silence of the state government has become very dangerous and is unfair to the entire people of Lagos.” Source Latestnignews..com

Moses Ogbaji is 29 years old, but his three-foot height sharply belies his age. However, his face and mannerisms show the maturity that is seemingly lacking in his tiny frame. Ogbaji is a dwarf, but this did not stop him from fantasising about being a pilot, particularly in his childhood. Even as a grown man, Ogbaji said he sometimes wishes he was taller, so he could have a shot at fulfilling his childhood fantasy. He speaks on life in Lagos and how women are fighting to have them... “I wish that I could be a pilot; to be up in the air and travelling everywhere. I remember dreaming about it, especially when I was younger, but a person of my stature cannot be a pilot. So I will have to miss not having the opportunity to become a pilot in my lifetime.” Dwarfs are generally considered to be at a disadvantage in a world dominated by relatively tall people. They are often bullied, cheated and jeered in educational, work and social settings. Mr. Moses Ogbaji, who hails from Oju Local Government Area of Benue State, said people sometimes call him ‘Congo’ on the streets of Lagos. “Some people call us ‘Congo’; they will say that we are from the Democratic Republic of Congo and not Nigeria,” he said. Basically, dwarfs face stigma and discrimination because of their stature, so they consequently withdraw socially and tend to associate more with fellow dwarfs by clustering together. In Lagos, Moyosore Abiodun Shopping Complex, Oshodi and Ebute-Ilaje in Bariga area serve as base where dwarfs of various ethnic groups from across the country are found. Chibuna Emeka, 20, who is the only dwarf in his family, said most of them are into film making to survive the public ridicule they face, along with the limited opportunities available to them. Even with that, Emeka claimed that they are often cheated by other people in the movie industry, and therefore, resolved to the marketing of CDs themselves. “People look at us and laugh but I know that I didn’t create myself. We gather here in the morning, and then we go out to market and converge here in the evening,” Emeka said. He is married to a tall woman, Chinasa, and they have a daughter who is not a dwarf. Emeka said he was pleased that his daughter, Happiness, did not take after him and so, saved from the pains that characterised his childhood. Emeka, who grew up in Abia State, only had elementary education because according to him, much of his childhood was spent as a lonely boy. He said, “I was always alone and I had no friends; it was how my mind wanted it.” But unlike Emeka, Ogbaji considered himself a ‘yuppy dwarf’ and his dressing bore testimony to his claim. While speaking to Punch, Ogbaji had two earrings on his left ear, one on his right and another ring to adorned his nose. His permed hair, combed backwards, was black and shiny. Ogbaji drinks, goes clubbing and even asks women for a dance, although he admitted that his advances are not always successful and that dancing with a tall woman could sometimes be awkward. He said dwarfs are good in bed that women often fight over them. Ogbaji reveals that he has two tall girlfriends, one of whom might become his wife later in the year. “I have two girlfriends and they are tall. I wooed the first one but it was the second one who wooed me and now, they are fighting over me,” Ogbaji said, attributing his love 'luck' to his ‘dress sense’ and ‘sweet loving’ nature. A consultant family physician, Dr. Gbolahan Abideen, said dwarfs’ “intellect is intact, in spite of their small size. What they need is for the society to support them so they can blossom and reach their full potential. They do not need dole-outs or people’s sympathy, what they need is empathy,” he said. Victor Udochukwu Nwaogu, a dwarf, is a Theatre Arts graduate from the University of Ibadan. He is finding it difficult getting a job. He said: “People tend to look down on physically or specially-challenged people, but an able-bodied person can become physically challenged tomorrow, so it is important that issues affecting people in the society are addressed.” Source latestnignews..com

1.Equatorial Guinea – GDP per capita: $30,200 The Republic of Equatorial Guinea is a countryin Central Africa. Most people have never heard of it. This country flew into stardom after 1996 when large oil reserves were found in the nation of only 0,5 million people. While being one of the largest producers of oil in Africa, little has been made to improve the living conditions of the people. Corruption is widespread and ordinary people are mostly living in poverty. The gap between rich and poor is probably the largest in the world. 2.Botswana – GDP per capita: $15,800 3.Gabon – GDP per capita: $14,900 4.Libya – GDP per capita: $14,900 5.Mauritius – GDP per capita: $12,400 6.South Africa – GDP per capita: $10,400 7.Angola – GDP per capita: $9,100 8.Tunisia – GDP per capita: $8,000 9.Algeria – GDP per capita: $7,100 10.Egypt – GDP per capita: $5,500 Source from latestnignews..com |

Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit has arrested 183 suspected hoodlums in Oshodi and Mafoluku areas of the state. The arrest came four weeks after PUNCH Metro published its findings that Oshodi was gradually being overtaken by filth and criminals. It was learnt that while 170 hoodlums were arrested at Oshodi, 13 were arrested at an abandoned pit toilet at Mafoluku. Residents of the area alleged that the abandoned public toilet was being used as a hideout by the suspects. It was gathered that 19 females were among the 170 hoodlums arrested in Oshodi. Two of them are pregnant, three were nursing mothers, while two were underage. Task force Chairman, Bayo Sulaiman, a Chief Superintendent of Police, explained that the raid was meant to discourage hoodlums from returning to Oshodi area, adding that 46 of them had been arrested and jailed in the past. He said, “The case of the 46 hoodlums who had been arrested in the past would be specially treated. “I must also explain that among the suspects, we have 20 underage boys and eight underage girls. “The underage hoodlums will be taken to the Lagos State Remand Home.” Sulaiman also said the abandoned toilet at Mafoluku was raided after a tip-off, saying two of the 13 hoodlums arrested had been set free during screening. “We also demolished the toilet to prevent criminals from using the place as a hideout again. Indian hemp was recovered at the abandoned toilet. “We learnt that many women and girls had been defiled at the abandoned toilet because the vicinity was always dark at night,” he said. He said those arrested would be charged to court to serve as a deterrent to other hoodlums and send a signal to them that Lagos is not a haven for criminals.
