Odutola Dolapo of Montclair College, Ogun State has emerged the Senior National Champion of the 2019 Season of Nigeria Spelling Bee. In the same vein, Grace Idowu also of Montclair College is the Junior Champion of the national literary competition. These Spellers have won for themselves a #1,000,000 scholarship and a #100,000 cash prize for the Senior and Junior Champions respectively.

Declaring the competition open, the Founder of Ritman University, Distinguished Senator Emmanuel Ibok Essien declared 50% tuition scholarships to the Champions in both categories in addition to the Nigeria Spelling Bee prizes.
The winning words were “Pointe” and “Cantankerous” for the champions.

Coming in as a close 1st runner up is Sulaiman Dunoma of Federal Government College Maiduguri, with Alexander Amaike of Federal Government College Maiduguri clinching the 2nd runner-up position, both in the senior category. In the junior league, we have Simon Ayobami of Montclair College Ogun and Peter Onyekachi of Best Brains College Ibadan coming in 1st and 2nd runners-up respectively. These spellers have proven themselves to be the best spellers in Nigeria.

In the Essay Writing competition which were part of activities for the National Finals, we have the best writers as Adaugo Nnamdi-Kanu of Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (Girls Section) Abuja and Sadiq Rayhan Olanrewaju of Chaste Intellect International School Ilorin in the junior and senior categories respectively.

In addition to their National Prizes, these spellers have won an all-expenses-paid trip to represent Nigeria at the 2019 African Spelling Bee in Uganda, this October. Their predecessors last year went to the continental stage and won all three titles of Best Senior Speller, Joint Best Junior Speller and Best Country Team.

This season’s National Finals was hosted by Ritman University Ikot-Ekpene, Akwa-Ibom State. The competition was organised by the Bee Spelling Competition Initiative, a self-sponsored NGO endorsed by the Federal Ministry of Education.

Speaking at the opening of the competition, Senator Emmanuel Ibok Essien, the founder of Ritman University welcomed all spellers who came from the length and breadth of the Nation to showcase their spelling prowess and charged them to be good cultural and unity ambassadors of the country in any part of the nation they may reside.

The Vice-Chancellor of Ritman University, Prof. Celestine Ntuen, also charged these spellers to do all they can to bring about positive change in the society that will foster a more peaceful living and prosperity for all. It was also interesting to note the giant strides the university has been able to make within its short existence, which includes coming in the top in all accredited courses and winning multiple awards at both local and international outings by its students.

Mr Gbenga Omotosho, the South-West Regional Coordinator, representing the Chairman, Board of Trustees of Nigeria Spelling Bee, expressed the organizers highest appreciation to Ritman University for hosting the Spellers and treating them to a world-class university experience.

Mr Love Joshua, the Programs Director of the competition also thanked all schools, teachers and parents who participated in the 2019 Season, even as he informed the general public that registration for the 2020 Season of Nigeria Spelling Bee is already ongoing online at www.NigeriaSpellingBee.com/register and competition will resume in the 1st term of the 2019/2020 Academic Session.

Sixty One students across Nigeria are set to converge in Akwa-Ibom State to compete for the title of the best Speller in Nigeria (Junior / Senior) at the National Grand Finale of Nigeria Spelling Bee. These Spellers have proven their spelling prowess from their various state and regional level competitions across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

The Grand Finale is scheduled to hold at the International Conference Hall of Ritman University Ikot-Ekpene, Akwa-Ibom State on Saturday the 27th of July 2019.

Six National Champions will win an all-expenses-paid trip to represent Nigeria at the African Spelling Bee in Uganda later this year. It should be recalled that last season's champions went on to win the African Spelling Bee championship in both categories in Kenya.

The National Senior Champion stands to win a N1,000,000 scholarship to any Nigerian university while the Junior Champion takes home a N100,000 cash prize. Other scholarships and cash prizes will be won by the 2nd and 3rd place winners in both categories.

The national spelling contest is aimed at improving reading among Nigeria students. It is organised by the Bee Spelling Competition Initiative, a self-sponsored NGO with the endorsement of the Federal Ministry of Education.

While the 2019 Season rounds up with the National Finals, registration for the 2020 Season has commenced against the 2019/2020 academic session. Schools and parents are advised to register their spellers early and download the free Study Guide to start preparing their students for success in the new season. Nigeria’s spellers who traveled to Kenya for the 2018 African Spelling Bee have done exceptionally well and emerged the Best Spelling Bee Team in Africa including winning many titles such as the Senior and Junior Championships as well as a Joint 2nd Runner-Up position in the Senior Category in the continental event.

Keren Chigozie-Nnah of Deeper Life high School Port Harcourt, emerged the Champion in the Senior Category while Neta Nnabuenyi of University of Nigeria Secondary School Enugu and Sheriff Abdrahman of King’s College Lagos, both from Nigeria tied in the 1st Position and were declared Joint Champions.

Honour Akinmusire of Deeper Life High School Lagos also emerged Joint 2nd-Runner-Up in the Senior Category with a Rwandan speller.

Nigeria was also declared the Best Country Team of the African Spelling Bee 2018 in Kenya.

Among the team were Ogochukwu Anyaso (Snr) of Bishop Okoye Spritan Secondary School, Rivers State and Hauwa’u Hamisu Abubakar (Jnr) of Matrix International Academy, Gombe.

It would be recalled that Sheriff Mohammad won the last edition of the competition in the Senior category.

These spellers have done us all proud.

These spellers emerged to represent Nigeria at the Continental level after competing and winning various titles in the 2018 edition of Nigeria Spelling Bee’s National Finals.

Keren Chigozie-Nnah wins Nigeria Spelling Bee!
The National Grand Finale of the Nigeria Spelling Bee (www.NigeriaSpellingBee.com), 2018 Season has been conducted (21st July) and we are happy to announce that we have our national champions and representatives of Nigeria at the African Spelling Bee 2018 in Mombasa, Kenya.

Re-echoing the Federal Ministry of Education’s charge, the Minister of Education (Represented by Mr Aiseodion Abel), urged the winners of the competition to go out and do Nigeria Proud by clinching all positions and prizes in the continental level.

Highlights:
National Champion is Keren Chigozie-Nnah of Deeper Life High School, Port Harcourt.
National 1st Runner-up is Ephraim Edokpa of Christ Ambassador’s College, Kaduna
National 2nd Runner-up is Ogochukwu Anyaso of Bishop Okoye Spiritan Secondary School, Port Harcourt

Junior 1st, Neta Nnabuenyi of University of Nigeria Secondary School, Enugu Campus;
Junior 2nd, Sheriff Abdrahman of King’s College, Lagos, and
Junior 3rd, Abdulhafeez Sheidu of Dopemu Primary School, Lagos.

The Grand Finale which held at the International Conference Centre of Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara State was the culmination of the 2018 Season which was conducted in more than 20 states across the federation. Regional Finals were held where the best emerged to compete at this finals level.

Addressing the spellers, coaches and the audience, the Vice Chancellor, represented by the Registrar welcomed all spellers from far and near and asked them to inculcate some of the core values of Landmark University in their daily activities and to be the best they can be.

Pst. (Dr) James Ndako, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, congratulated the Nigeria Spelling Bee team for their efforts towards education and enjoined the team to keep the already cordial relationship with Landmark University open and strong.

The competition lasted for 6 distinct Rounds which included a round of questions from selected Nigerian indigenous language words and another round of words drawn from the book, “Dreams of Tomorrow” by R.B. Alade.

We want to use this medium to appreciate all stakeholders in the Nigeria Spelling Bee dream and especially thank Landmark University for an amazing reception given to the best spellers in Nigeria and the coaches/parents as they camped for the National Finals events.
We also appreciate the Minister of Education, represented by Mr. Aiseodion Abel.

Nigeria's Honourable Minister of State for Education (Prof. Anthony Onwuka), today received the Nigeria Spelling Bee Champions and team after a successful outing to the 2017 African Spelling Bee competition in South Africa which saw the emergence of Sheriff Muhammad of King's College, Lagos as the African Spelling Bee champion and Benebo Nchege of Deeper Life High School, Port Harcourt who came in 2nd place.

The Honorable Minister of State congratulated the Spellers and the Nigeria Spelling Bee team for winning both 1st and 2nd place at the Continental event after being presented with the Trophies by the National Coordinator of the Nigeria Spelling Bee (Abdulsalam Ibrahim) and urged them to do better at the 2018 edition by winning both 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

The Spellers who represented Nigeria at the international literary event include:
Sheriff Muhammad, Benebo Nchege, Jeremiah Nnaemeka, Alexa Idusuyi and Adeyemo Iseoluwa.

These Spellers formed the Nigerian Team after emerging Champions from their State and Regional Qualifiers for the 2017 edition of the
Nigeria Spelling Bee and the National Finals which was held at Nile University of Nigeria, Abuja on the 1st of July 2017.

The 2018 season of the national spelling championship is ongoing across all the states of the federation and registration is still on for some states online at www.NigeriaSpellingBee.com for students 16 years and below.

Winners of this season will represent Nigeria at the 2018 African Spelling Bee in Mombasa - Kenya.

A Nigerian speller has distinguished himself as the best speller in Africa after emerging the Champion in the African Spelling Bee 2017.

Sheriff Muhammad of Kings College, Lagos who was part of the team of spellers representing Nigeria at the African Spelling Bee 2017 held in South Africa spelt his way through to the 7th Round of the contest.

He was followed by another Nigerian, Benebo Nchege of Deeper Life High School Port-Harcourt in a Joint 2nd place with Zameer Dada of South Africa.

Both Sheriff and Benebo competed in the Nigeria Spelling Bee and excelled in their respective states and regional competition and went on to be National Finalists. Benebo clinched the title of National Champion in the National Finals held at Nile University, Abuja on the 1st of July.

As part of prizes won in the competition is a Full Scholarship to Monash South Africa worth $20,000. Monash South Africa is ranked among the Best 100 Universities in the world. Other prizes include promotional items sponsored by MTN, Makro and Planet Fitness.

The African Spelling Bee championship tested the spellers on indigenous languages spoken in Africa as the Round 1 (non-elimination). After which, other rounds followed such as the words from the pre-scribed reading materials. These included “I am an African” by Thabo Mbeki, “Kingdom of Mapungubwe” and the “Constitutive Act of the African Union”

Round 3 was made up of words taken from the spellers’ visits to Maropeng and Sterkfontien Caves heritage sites. These words were “fossil fuelled”.

Other rounds included the English words from African Origin, Names of African Cities, Loan words and names of Cities around the world.

All the spellers in the Nigerian Team at the African Spelling Bee did the country proud. These spellers will be returning to Nigeria on Sunday the 17th of December through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. We invite all stakeholders in the education sector to welcome these spellers as they arrive back to Nigeria at 8pm.

Nigeria’s top spellers left Nigeria to South Africa on the night of 13th December for the African Spelling Bee, 2017 edition holding in South Africa on the 16th of December.

The spellers and the Nigerian delegation comprising of coaches, parents and official of the organizers arrived O. R. Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg for the continental event.

At the airport, the spellers met their Ugandan counterparts who had earlier arrived from Uganda, and they were later joined by the Tanzania and Zimbabwe teams.

The spellers are presently lodged at the Cradle of Humankind, Maropeng, Gauteng where they will be treated to a tour of the World Heritage Site on the 15th.

These spellers emerged at the National Finals of the Nigeria Spelling Bee on the 1st of July, 2017 after proving themselves from the State and Regional qualifiers up to the National Level.

The South-East Regional Competition of the Nigeria Spelling Bee was held on the 13th of May, 2017.

The regional event was well contested with 38 spellers from the South-Eastern states of Abia, Anambra, Enugu and Imo showcasing their spelling prowess for a chance to be one of 5 national finalists from the region.

At the end of the contest that lasted 6 rounds, Ugonna Ndubuisi Magdalene (033) of MOUAU Secondary School emerged the best speller from the South-East region to clinch a spot at the National Final coming up in Abuja.

Other spellers to qualify for the National Final include Anyaeche Mmesoma (001) of Beth-Roots Schools, Onitsha; Chima-Edward Joy (006) of MOUAU Secondary School; Jane Chidera Nwachukwu (016) of His Grace High School, Enugu; and Obinna K. Ukonne of Royal Rock Academy.

Each speller received a satchel containing study materials for the national finals.

These spellers will compete to be the Nigeria Spelling Bee Champion. Winners at the National Finals will win scholarship awards worth One Million Naira for the Champion and a chance to represent Nigeria at the African Spelling Bee competition in Kenya in July.
