I've always been struck by the last part of this prayer, where Jabez asks God to keep him from evil, that it may not grieve him. He wasn't only asking for blessing and enlarged territory; he understood that favor without godly character would end up destroying him. I prayed this prayer every morning for a season some years back, and it taught me to ask boldly like a child while still leaving the outcome in God's hands. The lesson that his painful past did not have to define him is one I return to whenever I feel limited by where I started. Thank you for sharing this reflection, it came at the right time.
