Lionel is starting the year off strong with a brand new HO scale tooling. These 2-8-4 Berkshires are sure to set a new level of detail and quality within Lionel’s HO scale division. A total of thirteen road numbers between three railroads are available this year. Represented are Chesapeake & Ohio, Nickel Plate Road, and Pere Marquette. Let us dive in!

A Brief History

Following the success of the 2-8-2 Mikado class, railroads across America looked into new stronger locomotives to haul ever growing freight needs. Boston and Albany was the the first to produce such a locomotive in the late 1920s. The 2-8-4 Berkshire became a staple of freight trains by the late 1930s. With a good tonnage, high boiler pressure, and tractive effort these steel beasts pulled fast-freight trains wherever they served. Lionel brings to you thirteen locomotives from three different railroads. Each railroad’s Berkshires have specific details added to them to help closer resemble the real thing.

Features:

Unlike previously offered HO scale Berkshires from Lionel, these new toolings will feature die-cast boilers and frames. No plastic boilers here! The fully-detailed cab is equipped with an Engineer and Fireman. The Tender is even fitted with underframe details. There are two variations of each Berkshire available to order: DCC and DCC-Ready. DCC-Equipped locomotives sport an ESU LokSound 5 decoder with a power pack for those rough spots on the track. Conversely for those of you who would like a different 21-pin decoder or want to run the locomotive conventionally, the DCC-Ready version is the choice for you. None of these locomotives are fitted with the Lionchief system, therefore there is no Bluetooth out of the box.

C&O Berkshires

The Chesapeake and Ohio railroad received their first Class K-4 Berkshires in 1943. 90 locomotives of this class were built from 1943-1947. Construction started during WWII.

Lionel’s track system is called FasTrack. It is known for being easy to use, and is typically the go-to for people looking to start a layout. It is easy to assemble and disassemble which makes it the most convenient for temporary displays, and floor layouts. FasTrack comes with a good selection of track types and switches which makes it easily expandable. Another bonus is that it can be found just about anywhere that model trains are sold. One complaint that people usually have about FasTrack is that it gets very loud. Fortunately, there are ways around that. People will usually use foam, or cork under the roadbed, which makes for a much quieter model railroading experience. What FasTrack lacks in realism, it makes up for in it’s versatility and ease of use.
