A lot of Nigerians are carrying heavy loads in their hearts, but you will never know because everybody is trying to form strong. Society has trained us like that. No matter how bad it is, you must package. Someone loses his job, and instead of admitting that he is drowning, he still smiles and says, “God is in control.” A lady is in a relationship that is crushing her spirit every day, but she does not want to look weak, so she keeps posting fine pictures on Instagram. A young man is neck-deep in debt, but every Friday he borrows clothes and perfume just to sit at a club where nobody even knows his real name. By Saturday morning, reality is waiting for him again: rice without meat, empty account, landlord still knocking. This is the life many people are living. Not because they don’t know it is fake, but because society has made it shameful to show weakness. We have turned “packaging” into survival. But deep down, people are breaking. I once met a guy who said, “Bro, I no fit sleep without drinking. I take alcohol every night, not because I enjoy it, but because it is the only way I can stop thinking.” Imagine how many people are using sex, drugs, alcohol, endless church activities, or even overworking themselves just to run away from their own thoughts. We are not addressing the pain. We are only covering it up. And covering up never heals anything. It only delays the breakdown. What I've realized it that ntil you face yourself as you are, nothing will change. No amount of borrowed swag or fake smiles can heal what you refuse to confront. Life is not Nollywood. When you sweep dirt under the carpet, one day the stench will become too strong and everybody will smell it. So ask yourself,, who exactly are you living for? Society? Strangers online? Neighbours? Or for yourself? Because peace of mind will never come from “what people think.” Peace of mind comes when you can finally look in the mirror and not feel like a fraud. Sometimes the most courageous thing you can do as a Nigerian is to stop forming, stop pretending and admit: “I need help, I need to start again.” That is where healing begins. Because the real glow-up is not when you buy a car to pepper people. The real glow-up is when you can sleep at night without noise in your head. |
There’s one guy I know, let’s call him Chuka. Chuka was a normal hustler in Kaduna. He had a small shop where he sold phone accessories. Every month, he made just enough to pay rent and manage life. But anytime he scrolled Instagram or even WhatsApp, he would see his mates posting pictures with new cars, popping drinks at clubs, traveling to Dubai. At first, he ignored it. But with time, the pressure started eating him. His family would call and say, “Your mates are doing well, when will you also make us proud?” Even his girlfriend started dropping subtle hints: “Baby, don’t you think it’s time you upgrade? At least get a car, people will respect you more.” Chuka began to feel like he was failing in life. He wasn’t lazy, he wasn’t useless, but because he wasn’t living up to society’s standard, he carried shame everywhere he went. One day, out of frustration, he joined some friends who were into Yahoo. He told himself it was temporary, that once he made it small, he would leave. Within months, Chuka was driving a Mercedes Benz. His parents praised him, his girlfriend became proud again, even his neighbors started calling him “boss.” On the outside, he looked like he had arrived. But on the inside, he was drowning. The fear of EFCC, the lies, the sleepless nights, the emptiness, it was killing him slowly. One evening, while sitting alone in his car, he confessed: “This Benz no dey sweet me. I thought once I got it, my life would change. But now I realize I only did it for other people. I don’t even recognize myself anymore.” And that’s the painful truth: many Nigerians are living like Chuka. We let societal pressure push us into things we don’t want, into debts we can’t repay, into lifestyles we can’t sustain. We kill ourselves trying to prove a point to people who don’t even care. This is a raw reminder that until you stop living for people and start living for yourself, nothing will ever feel enough. Because the truth is, peace of mind will take you farther than any Benz.

She Took Off Her Clothes, Then I Realized Something… Let me tell you a small story. One evening, I found myself in a situation many people secretly pray for. Beautiful girl, soft light, quiet room. We were talking, laughing, and the mood just flowed. Before I could even think twice, she started unbuttoning her blouse. Now, as a guy, your brain is supposed to be shouting “jackpot!” But instead, something strange happened. As she took off her clothes, I suddenly froze. My mind wasn’t on her anymore. It was on me. Because in that moment, I realized something deeper: I wasn’t really looking for her body. I was looking for escape. Escape from the mess I had allowed my life to become. I was chasing sex, drinks, endless scrolling, fake vibes — anything to distract myself from the fact that my life outside looked fine, but inside I was empty. And you know how it is in Naija — we don’t like to admit when we’re broken. We joke, we flex, we post, we pretend. But when you drop phone and the lights are out, the truth will sit beside you like a heavy stone. That’s when you know: pleasure is sweet, but it won’t fix pain. Sex can comfort you for a night, but it can’t heal a scattered life. That night was a turning point for me. I didn’t judge her. I judged myself. And for the first time, I admitted: “Guy, your life dey bleeped up. You need to face am.” That was the seed that later became my book — “Unfuck Your Life.” It’s not one of those sugar-coated motivational talks. It’s real, raw, and straight to the point. It’s about how to stop running, stop hiding, and finally rebuild the life you deserve — step by step, choice by choice. I don’t know who needs to hear this right now, but maybe you’re like me that night. You’ve been looking for healing in temporary pleasures. You laugh outside, but you cry inside. You post strong, but you feel weak. My message is simple: you can unfuck your life. Not tomorrow. Not when conditions are perfect. But today — starting small, starting honest, starting with you.
