What Are Data Validation Lists?
Creating a drop-down list is a great way to ensure that entries are uniform and free from spelling errors. It also helps restrict entries so that only values you’ve approved make it onto the sheet.

That’s why they are also called data validation lists. They help to make sure that only valid data makes it into the cells that you’ve applied it to.

This can be helpful when multiple users are entering data on the same sheet and you want the options to be limited to a list of items or values that you’ve already approved.

We can also use drop-down lists to create interactive reports and financial models, where results change when the user changes a cell’s value.

How to Create a Drop-down (Data Validation) List
To create a drop-down list, start by going to the Data tab on the Ribbon and click the Data Validation button.

The Data Validation window will appear. The keyboard shortcut to open the Data Validation window is Alt, A, V, V.

You’ll want to select List in the drop-down menu under Allow.

At this point there are a few ways that you can tell Excel what items you want to include in your drop-down list.

Drop-down List from Comma Separated Values
The first way is by typing all of the options that you want in your drop-down list, separated by commas, into the Source field. For example, if there are only two options to choose from, such as Yes and No, you would simply type “Yes, No” (do not include the quotation marks) in the Source box. It doesn’t matter whether a space follows your comma or not.

A longer list of options might look like this: “Red, Blue, Green, Purple, Orange, Yellow, Brown”. The options in your drop-down list will appear in the exact same order that you have typed them.

Note: On some language versions of Excel you will need to use a semicolon ( instead of a comma.

Drop-down List from a Range of Values
The second way to fill your list with options is to choose them from a range of values. To do this, instead of typing values into the Source field, you want to select the icon to the right.

Selecting this icon will open up a small window that will auto-fill when you select a range of cells on the worksheet. Once you've selected the values you want to appear in your drop-down list, you can click on the corresponding icon to take you back to the Data Validation window.

At this point, the range you've selected will show in the Source box and you can just hit OK.

Now the values in the range that you've selected show as options that you can choose from in your drop-down list.

Shortcut for Selecting from the Drop-down List
To choose the option you want from your drop-down list, you can use your mouse to click on the option you want. Another way to select it is to use the keyboard shortcut Alt+?. This brings up the drop-down list and you can use your up and down arrow keys to highlight the selection you want, and then press Enter to select.

How to Search the Drop-down List
Unfortunately, Excel doesn't have an option to search the drop-down list for a particular item, but I've created an add-in that gives you that option. It's called List Search and you can access that add-in here:

How to Copy the Data Validation List to Other Cells
If you have created a drop-down list for a particular cell and would like other cells to have the same data validation list, you can easily copy (extend) that list to other cells.

Start by clicking on the cell that has the list, and then select any additional cells that you want to extend the drop-down list to. This can include blank cells or cells that already have values in them.

As before, you will click on the Data Validation button in the Data tab, but this time a warning will appear that says, “The selection contains some cells without Data Validation settings. Do you want to extend the Data Validation to these cells?”

Choose Yes, and then hit OK when the Data Validation Window appears. You'll see that each of the cells in your selection now has the same drop-down options as the original cell.

It's also worth noting that you can copy and paste Data Validation from one cell to another just as you would copy and paste normal values and formatting.

Handling Errors and Invalid Inputs
What happens when we enter a value into a cell that has a Data Validation List, but that value is not one of the options in the list? That depends on the Error Alert settings, which we have control of.

To change the kind of message the user receives when they enter an extraneous value, you can go back to the Data Validation window. Under the Error Alert tab, you can find three options: Stop, Warning, and Information.

You’ll also notice that there are fields where you can change the title of the error message and the text of the message itself, so that when the user enters data that’s not part of your validation list, they will receive an alert that’s worded in the way you want it to appear.

Here is an explanation of each Error Alert Style:

Stop Style
When the user types an invalid entry, an error message will appear that gives the option to either retype the entry or cancel the attempt. The message looks like this:

The Warning style displays a message that gives the user a choice to allow an entry that isn’t on the preset list.

The Information style displays a message that automatically allows the entry no matter what the value is. The user is presented with informative text about validation rules.

Error Checking Alert
When any invalid entry is made in a cell, the error checking alert will appear in the cell. The error is indicated with the green triangle in the top-left corner of the cell. Clicking the Error Box button will allow you to see more info about data validation error. You can select “Display Type Information” from the list to see the cause of the error.



Disable Error Alerts

Another option under the Error Alert tab is to uncheck the box that says, “Show error alert after invalid data is entered.” This allows any value to be entered into the cell, and no message box will appear.

Adding New Data to the Source Range of the List
Adding new options to our drop-down list is possible, but it isn't automatic when we add new items the bottom of our source list. We need to tell Excel what our new extended source range is. You can do that in the Data Validation window by just typing in the new range, or re-selecting the range to include the new data. (See the section above entitled “Create a Drop-Down List from a Range of Values” for how to select your range.)

The great thing is that we don't have to redefine these settings for each cell that has Data Validation. The “Apply these changes to all other cells with the same settings” checkbox does this for us. When you click the checkbox, the other cells will selected in the background. This gives you a visual indication of what will be updated.

Then press OK. Any cells that shared the same data validation settings will now include the updated changes that you’ve made.

There is a way to automate the process so that any change you make to the source data instantly updates your drop-down list. It involves using Excel tables and named ranges. You can find out how in this post:

Removing Data Validation from a Cell
Getting rid of a Data Validation list is simple. Open the Data Validation window and click the Clear All button.

If you want to clear the validation settings from other cells with the same settings, make sure to click that checkbox before hitting the Clear All button.

Make Your Workbooks Interactive
Data Validation lists are a great tool to add to your Excel toolbelt. They help us keep our data clean and make our spreadsheets easier to use. We can use them as the source of lookup formulas to create interactive financial models and reports. I will do some follow-up posts with these techniques as well.

Once you feel comfortable with drop-down lists, you may want to try dependent (also called cascading) lists. These are lists that change depending on what you've already chosen in another list. For example, you may create a list of car brands, like Toyota, Ford, and Honda. Then you can have a second list of car models that populates with specific options depending on what you choose in the first list. If you choose Toyota in the first list, you might see Corolla, Camry, and Tacoma in the second. But if you go back to the first list and choose Ford, the options in the second list can change to Mustang, Explorer, and Focus. Learn how to create dependent cascading lists here.

Whether you are looking for a quick diversion from the grind of adulthood or are teaching a youngster DIY skills, these planes are a great way to add a little levity to your day. The examples below are all beginner or intermediate level. The materials are cheap and only require paper, a pair of scissors, a ruler, and some double stick tape (optional) to complete.

For best results use a flat, thin-edged ruler. Make good creases along each edge. Adding double stick tape to the inside of the body keeps the wings from separating in flight.

The most basic version. A simple standard that everyone should know how to make.

Fold the paper in half vertically.
Unfold the paper and fold each of the top corners into the center line.
Fold the top edges into the center line.
Fold the plane in half toward you.
Fold the wings down, matching the top edges up with the bottom edge of the body.
Add double stick tape to the inside of the body. The finished plane should look like this.

This one is built for distance, plus it just looks cool.

Cut two small slits at the back of each wing. Fold up the tabs.

Few years back, when i never knew how AdSense works, i find it very difficult to get approval with one of my blogs even with the fact that i was writing original contents.

I have learnt , that this same AdSense rejection issue has made many bloggers to quite blogging.

Therefore, i won’t let you be a victim that’s why i wrote this article.

I can guarantee you that after reading this post , your next application would be success .

To get AdSense approval fast and easy follow below guides carefully.

You Don’t Need Organic Traffic to get AdSense approval:
Am sounding strange right, probably because of so many articles you have read about AdSense approval online.

Personally i have seen on many websites where authors says, You need enough organic traffic to get approved by AdSense but i prove it wrong here.

As in the case of this blog, i was having 0% organic traffic when i got approved by AdSense, since it was just a new blog of two weeks old.

If i can get my AdSense approved without any google traffic, why must your case be different or do you think am a VIP AdSense member? maybe it’s because my younger sister is an AdSense official in charge of approving or disapproving AdSense applications.

What ever you might be thinking, just get it at the back of your mind, that your AdSense can be approved with zero organic traffic having tested and confirmed it.

Does it mean organic traffic is not important?

despite the fact that you can get AdSense approval easily even without organic traffic, you still need it to boost your AdSense earning.

Organic Visitor are more likely to earn you high CPC. So you need organic traffic to increase your AdSense wallet but not for getting approval.

You don’t Need 100+ pageviews to get AdSense approval:
You heard me right. (())?

I have came across so many questions like “How many Daily page views do i need to get AdSense approval both on forums and personally.

Some do say 100+ page views as their own recommendation. but i was so surprised to see all those reviews as fake, having gotten my AdSense approved with less than 15-daily Page views.

It happened not once, and not even twice, as i have many other blogs that has gotten AdSense approved even with less than 20 Daily PageViews.

The Number of Your daily page views doesn’t really matter when it comes to getting AdSense approval fast and easy.

So, If you are getting 20 page Views or more in a day and yet your application is still rejected by AdSense, you shouldn’t feel it’s the cause of your traffic.

100% Original Contents Is Needed:
86% of entertainment bloggers can’t get AdSense approval, this is because most of them do copy and paste work.

Some of the great news websites on the internet do get news from other sources just like you do, but what makes them different from you , is the fact that they do many editorial works before publishing.

Some newbie bloggers won’t stop asking ” how can a blog post be original when it has been presented on many other blogs”

An article can be original when you rewrite posts from other sources in your own language and understanding.. It doesn’t matter wither the idea is original or not.

For you to get AdSense approval easily, You don’t need any form of copy and paste on your blog.

You should make sure that every piece of article that exits on your blog is written by you. If you can do this , I bet you have gotten 87%. chances of getting approved already.

So How many original Contents Do i need to get AdSense approval?
I can’t be specific about how many post you need to get AdSense approval but in all of my blogs where i have gotten AdSense approval, i usually write 10 articles and above before applying for google AdSense and with this i get approved easily.

Therefore i will say ” Before you apply for AdSense , you should have at least 8-10 original articles but if you have more, that will even be more great.

You need Indept Contents:
You can’t just write thin blog posts with less words and expect to get AdSense approval.

For you to get AdSense approval easily, i will advice you make your first set of articles indept with not less than 1000words per blog post.

Writing indept and quality articles will not only help you get AdSense approval easily, but you will also get organic traffic to your website.

The first set of the post which you want to use in applying for google AdSense must not be less than 8 to 10 blog posts with 1000words per post.

Find some topics that have more words potentials. After using those topics to get your website approved , you can start writing about other topics with less words.

Avoid Copyright Images/Graphics:
How can you know if the image want to use for your blog post is copyright right? ( this is what i don’t really know). but am very sure that using copyright images can make AdSense reject your application.

So what’s the way forward?

Whenever i create a new blog for AdSense monetisation, i don’t usually add images to the first crew of my articles until i get approved by AdSense.

I will also advice you do likewise . After getting AdSense approval , you can then start using any image you wish for your blog posts.

You need Pages and Not posts alone:
Some pages are deemed relevant for AdSense. so before applying for AdSense, you need the presence of those particular pages on your blog else your application might be rejected.

Below are the relevant pages you need before applying for google AdSense.

About Us Page: Let’s keep AdSense approval far from this.
How do you expect your blog readers to understand what your blog is all about without the presence of the about Us page on your blog?.

AdSense also understood this fact , so if you cannot add this page to your blog, your chances of rejection is just too big to uncover.

Contact Us Page: This page will help your blog readers get in touch with you. You need to create this page where you will add your contact details.

This implies you are not a robot. You are Also human and you cares about your blog readers.

Make sure you add the contact us page to your blog before applying for AdSense.

Privacy Policy: this page ensure the safety of the information shared on your blog, by your blog readers.

Some newbie bloggers find it very hard coming up with texts that makes up this page. You can use some free online privacy policy Generators to build the texts that makes up this page.

The three pages above are most important pages recommended, when it comes to getting AdSense approval.

Some bloggers do say, Disclaimer page is also relevant . but even when i don’t add it to my blogs, i still get AdSense approval.

Therefore, i will say you can also get approved without the disclaimer page.

Some Approved Ads might be a Taboo:
If you are using some other Ads networks on your blog, AdSense recommends you remove ads such as RevContent, Taboola, etc. before applying.

Even if you will use them for monetisation, make sure you remove them when applying for google AdSense.

After getting your AdSense approved, you may serve other ads for monetisation.

Your Website structure is very important when applying for AdSense.

You need a good site design to get approved by AdSense easily.

Make sure your blog design is good and have a readable font both on PC and mobile. with well arranged sidebar.

There are many free themes online with good design.

Personally, i do make use of Revenue theme in all of my blogs, including this blog you’re reading from is a customized revenue free theme . and with this theme, i have been gotten all of my AdSense application easily approved.

Free or paid Domain Name?:
It’s not necessary you apply with custom domain before getting approved, but it’s very important.

If you are using Free .com default domain name , You can still get approved. as i have gotten many testimonies about getting approved with free domain.

I wouldn’t want you to go through another stress of getting your AdSense approved, therefore i will recommend you get yourself a custom domain name before applying for AdSense.

Blogs Language Matters Too:
If you run a native blog, or multilingual blog, then you should use pages of your blog that has the AdSense supported language in applying for AdSense.


Even after getting approved AdSense, don’t place Ads on languages that are not supported by AdSense. If you do, am very sure you will loose your AdSense account.

6 Months Old Blog? Yes or No?

If you want to apply for AdSense, From such countries, i will advice you keep your website till 6months old or more before applying.

However i have gotten AdSense approved both for myself and for my friends in some of those countries even without reaching 6months.
