Everton have agreed a deal to sign Swansea City midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson for a fee believed to be about £45m.

The Iceland player scored nine goals and contributed 13 assists last season to help the Swans avoid relegation from the Premier League.

The 27-year old will have a medical at Goodison Park on Wednesday.

Sigurdsson will be a record signing for Everton, who paid £31.8m to Chelsea for striker Romelu Lukaku in 2014.

Swansea set an asking price of £50m for Sigurdsson in July after rejecting an offer worth about £40m from Leicester.

The Welsh club then turned down a similar bid from the Toffees, who had been interested in signing the Iceland playmaker for more than a year.

Spurs will reportedly benefit from a 10% sell-on clause, having sold Sigurdsson to Swansea in the deal which took Wales full-back Ben Davies and goalkeeper Michel Vorm to White Hart Lane.

A nine-year-old boy received an encouraging response from NASA after he applied for the role of planetary protection officer.

The job was listed this week as the space agency seeks help to protect Earth from aliens.

In technical terms, the officer would assist with the "avoidance of organic-constituent and biological contamination in human and robotic space exploration".

The job advert notes that "space flight missions may intentionally or unintentionally carry Earth organisms and organic constituents to the planets or other solar system bodies".

Among the first applicants for the role was nine-year-old Jack Davis. He wrote to the space agency to explain:

"My name is Jack Davis and I would like to apply for the planetary protection officer job.

I may be nine but think I would be fit for the job.

One of the reasons is my sister says I am an alien also I have seen almost all the space and alien movies I can see.

I have also seen the show Marvel Agents of Shield and hope to see the movie Men in Black.

I am great at video games.

I am young, so I can learn to think like an Alien.

Jack in turn received a letter from the eminent Dr James L Green, the director of NASA's planetary science division:

Dear Jack,

He also received a phone call from NASA's planetary research director, Jonathan Rall, at NASA Headquarters in Washington, to congratulate him on his interest in the position.

NASA stated that although the planetary protection officer position "may not be in real-life what the title conjures up", it plays an important role in "promoting the responsible exploration of our solar system by preventing microbial contamination of other planets and our own".

President Muhammad Buhari may resign if he does not recover from his ailment soon, sources have reported.
According to Independent, a Presidency source has disclosed that President Muhammad Buhari will pass the baton to his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, if he does not recover from his ailment soon.

The President has been in the United Kingdom for the better part of the year treating an undisclosed ailment, much to the chagrin of a large part of the population, including a good number of his supporters.

Independent reports the source to have said, “The president is not desperate to cling on to power if his health cannot carry him. I can tell you authoritatively that he has given a timeline that if he doesn’t recover fully on a specific date, he will file in his resignation letter and if you know President Buhari very well, he meant what he said.

“That is why Nigerians who love the president and his efforts in restoring Nigeria’s lost glory should continue to pray for his quick recovery. It will be to our disservice if he dies as some people are wishing him”, he said.

Independent also reported another source as stating that before the President embarked on his May trip to the United Kingdom, he had wanted to dispatch a resignation letter to the National Assembly but a retired general from Taraba state prevailed on him not to do so.

Chief Ebenezer Babatope, former Minister of Transport and chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), said there was no need for the President to resign as the leading opposition party will prefer if APC brings him to re-contest election in 2019, so as to guarantee their victory at the polls.

“I don’t think we should compound Nigeria’s problem by asking for the president’s resignation. First of all, it is not of his own making that he is sick. All of us must have been sick at one time or the other. If we want to help Nigeria succeed, let us pray for him to recover and come back to do his job.

“We in the PDP are not bothered by his resignation at all. We are even praying that he should come back and re-contest in 2019 because we know that we are going to beat him. But it doesn’t serve anybody’s interest to ask him to resign. Those doing so are just wasting their time”, he said to Independent.
