InvestmentThose Who Rob Themselves! by Lexv(op): 8:49pm On Jan 17, 2016

A burglar broke into the home of a very wealthy woman few days after she went on a trip. He broke into her house at exactly 9pm and since nobody was at home he decided to take his time.

He thoroughly searched the house for money and any other valuable property he could find. He literally tore the entire house apart in his desperate search for gold. And after everything, he was only able to steal a few thousand naira and some costly jewelries.

When this rich lady returned from her trip, she saw her house totally ripped apart and immediately she knew she had been robbed. Slowly, she walked through all the mess and entered into her study room. There, she found some of her books all scattered on the floor of her personal library. She soon walked into her bedroom, where some of her clothes were lying scattered on the bed. The burglar had stolen some cash she left at the drawer and some expensive jewelries.

Suddenly she paused, took a deep breath and smiled. Looking straight to the silent crowd she was narrating the experience to, including myself; she then went ahead to make a very important statement I would never forget. She said, “If it was possible to rob myself, I would neither take money nor jewelries. If i had the opportunity to rob someone as rich as myself, I would steal the books they read and the tapes they listen to. Why you may ask? “You see, In just a few months time” she continued. “that poor burglar would go broke again and would probably need to rob someone else to survive. The litte sum of money he stole from me would never make him rich because his mind is still at the same level of development (Steal and consume). But if he had gone away with the books I read and the audio tapes I listen to, then he would have given himself access to the very information I built my wealth with. And In just a short time, he could have become truly rich and never have to steal again. By only stealing my money, that burglar had not really stolen from me since I can easily replace the money he had stolen because of what I know. What that burglar has done is that he has only succeeded in robbing himself!”

If you were that burglar, what would you have taken - the cash, jewelries, or books? Be honest with yourself. You see, in the end we only rob ourselves when we fail to read those books that could really add value to our lives. Jim Rohn advised, “We must not permit anything to stand between us and the books that could change our lives”.

Ignorance is costing you far more than you think and it has cost me a fortune. So lets stop robbing ourselves by failing to invest time, money and energy on our personal growth. Any money we spend on personal development is always a money well spent, so lets read, learn and apply what we learn because no matter how tall your father is, you must do your own stretching.

Start today to invest in your education. Who knows — the next book you read may just be the key to your success!

"The minute that you're not learning I believe you're dead".
- Jack Nicholson

You cannot rise above your present status in life until you rise above your current level of knowledge. Where you are presently is a function of all that you know and in order to grow beyond this level, you must know some new things. Solomon advised, "buy the truth and sell it not" but a lot of people are busy buying clothes, jewelries, shoes but never books. Sam Adeyemi, an individual I admire so much once said, "I have no respect for a man whose wardrobe is more expensive than his library". Zig Ziglar, the legendary motivational speaker quipped, "Rich people have small Tvs and big libraries, and poor people have small libraries and big Tvs".

The top achievers in almost every endeavor of life are those committed to a life of learning, self-development, and daily improvement of themselves. They would not spare a penny when it comes to adding value to themselves and sharpening their skills. Albert Einstein charged, "Try not to become a man of success but rather try to become a man of value". This is my personal interpretation of that quote: Don't chase after money, only be passionate about developing yourself and watch money pursue you. Do you know there are people who money pursues? They have invested so much into themselves that they constantly attract money wherever they go. Someone once said that "success is what you attract by being an attractive person". I absolutely agree with that statement because I have found it to be true even in my own personal life. But I'm not just talking about physical attraction, even though that has its own value, but what I'm referring to is the respect and reward you command because of the value you offer as a person. Henry David Thoreau once asserted that, "Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it". Busy doing what if you may ask? Busy improving themselves through the acquiring of new skills and good habits.

My son, eat thou honey because it is good and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste. So shall the knowlege of wisdom be unto thy soul, when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.
- Proverbs 24:13-14 {KJV}

God said in Jerimiah 29:11 that the thoughts He has has for us are thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give us an expected end. But He also said in Hosea 4:6 "That my people perish for lack of knowledge". Nothing defeats people like their ignorance and nothing empowers people like knowledge. I once attended a business seminar in Rivers State when I heard the speaker say that what we call 'Luck' today is an acronym which stands for Laboring Under Correct knowlege. So if you desire more LUCK in your daily life, then start laboring under correct knowlege! I think one habit that has helped me so much in life is my determination to learn one positive thing everyday. This I do without minding what it would cost me - financially, mentally or physically. And peradventure I fail to learn something any particular day, I make sure I double my effort the following day. My happiest moments in life are those moments when I know within me that I'm learning something that would improve my life a little bit more. Like when I learnt in Dale Carnegie's classic book, 'How To Win Friends And Influence People' that calling people by their names is very important to them, I immediately went to work to find out a way I can remember people's names more effectively. That decision has been one of the most important decision I ever made in my life. Whenever I am learning a new thing, no matter how small or insignificant it may be, I feel on top of the world. It took me seven days of hard labor and series of fustration to finally learn how to tie a tie but I cherished every moment of it. In the words of Elbert Hubbard, "Positive anything is better than negative nothing".

We achieve success one step at a time, one day at a time, a little bit of progress here and a tiny improvement there. And as we increase in our knowlegde of life, things, people and the world around us, the more equip we become and the more opportunities we can seize. "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go" (Dr Seuss). You may not have been born in a palace. You may have no enviable accademic degree. The total amount of money in your bank account may only be a kobo. But if you'll committ to a life of conscious and deliberate learning, there's no limit to what you can achieve! One of my favorite mentors of all time is Jim Rohn, and he once made a profound statement that changed my life forever. He said, "Formal eduation will make you a living; self eduation will make you a fortune". Do you just want to make a living or a fortune? If you said 'yes' to the latter and 'no' to the former then knowlege is your secret key
