The much-needed succour came last Monday (June 17, 2013) for a renal patient, and 100 level Science Education student of the University of Ilorin, Babatunde Lukman, as the University authorities donated N2.5 million towards his treatment. A cheque for the amount was presented by the Vice- Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, to the Director, Unilorin Health Services, Dr. (Mrs.) M. O. Ajiboye, at a solemn event attended by Lukman's mother, Mrs. Khadijat Babatunde, the three Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Prof. R. A. Lawal (Academic), Prof. Y. M. Fakunle (MS), and Prof. F. A. Oladele (RTI); the Registrar, represented by Mrs. R. A. Okojie; the Bursar, Mr. Ayo Sijuwola; the University Librarian, Dr. J. O. Omoniyi; the Dean, Faculty of Education, Prof. A. S. Olorundare; and the Sub- Dean, Student Affairs, Dr. A. Yusuf, among other senior officials of the University. Lukman, who is currently on admission at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) for kidney failure, is in dire need of kidney transplant for which a sum of N3 million is required. Presenting the cheque, Prof. Ambali stated that the University is one big family and that it is a good thing to stand up and support a member of the family. The Vice-Chancellor described the gesture of the patient's student colleagues who had earlier raised N830,000 towards his treatment as an expression of what the University stands for. Prof. Ambali said, “Whatever happens to one happens to all. Once a student steps into the campus, the University will care for him from the first day to his last day in the school as a family member,” adding that the University has procedures in place to help students academically and health-wise. Waxing philosophical, the Vice- Chancellor said that “medical challenge can come to anyone at any time and at any age,” stressing that it is important to support Lukman as quickly as possible. Prof. Ambali noted that doctors could only treat their patients but it is only God who heals. He expressed hope that the resources made available would make the best treatment available for Lukman and that the doctors would treat him successfully. The Vice-Chancellor thanked the students for standing by their colleague while also thanking the Governor of Kwara State, Dr. AbdulFattah Ahmed, for his donation of N1 million and the Senator representing Kwara Central, Senator Bukola Saraki and other well wishers who have made contributions towards the treatment of the student. Earlier, the Sub-Dean, Student Affairs, Dr. A. Yusuf, explained how the student slumped and was eventually diagnosed with kidney failure. He commended the University for being prompt in its intervention and being responsible for the first aid treatment the patient has been receiving. He noted that students have joined in the struggle to save Lukman's life by raising over N1, 182,000.00. The Sub-Dean also noted that the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria had also raised N625,000.00 in addition to the N1 million promised by the Kwara State Governor, disclosing that Senator Saraki had promised to make significant contributions to the treatment of the student who hails from the senator's constituency. In her remarks, the Director, Unilorin Health Services, Dr. (Mrs.) Ajiboye, said that the University has good welfare package for its students. She explained that students get free medical services even for repeated health visits. She explained that after the student was diagnosed with the medical condition, the University took care of the initial bill and commended the University management for the gesture. The Dean, Faculty of Education, Prof. Olorundare, thanked the University on behalf of Lukman's family and students of the Faculty. Prof. Olorundare also thanked the Unilorin Health Services, the Students Affairs Unit, the students body and the entire University community for their care and sacrifice. |

The Federal Government on Saturday said of the 1,735,720 students that registered for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, only 520,000 will gain admission. Addressing journalists at the Federal Government College, Suleja, Niger State, after monitoring the examination, Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai, blamed this on the low-carrying capacity of the tertiary institutions in Nigeria. She said, “The major challenge is a country like Nigeria having 1.7 million sitting for examination. The space we have is 520,000 for federal, states, private universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. “If one million passed, what are we going to do with the rest 500,000? We will not expand the carrying capacity without expanding the facilities. “What are we going to do with the large number of students out there? I feel the pain. Mr. President is very much concerned. If you have students that have passed examination and they cannot have access, you can imagine their thought in the long run.” Rufai called on private firms and individuals to invest in tertiary education. Responding to a question on the high fees charged by private universities, she said the legal department was looking into the ministry’s right to challenge the fees. Although she agreed that private investors had the right to recoup their money, the minister said government would consider legal options to regulate the situation. The minister also denied knowledge of any White Paper recommending the scrapping of the UTME and the National Examination Council. She said, “It has become a very controversial issue. I have made a statement before the National Assembly that the Federal Government has a white paper on this. I’m not aware that NECO and JAMB will be scrapped. If we are not aware, what are we going to make an analysis out of? Government has not taken decision on that.” Rufai further blamed improper shading of answer sheets by candidates for non-release of their results. “If they don’t shade their papers correctly, they may not have results,” she added. Meanwhile, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has arrested a middle-aged man who was identified as Isaac, for alleged impersonation at one of the Dual Based Test centres in Abuja. The JAMB Registrar/Chief Executive. Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, said the registration number on his slip and answer sheet did not tally. “The owner of the slip is from Enugu. He came here to impersonate another person. He had been handed over to civil defence who will hand him over to the police,” he said. Meanwhile, no fewer than nine candidates were feared dead, while six were injured in an auto crash on the Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway on Friday. The victims were said to be on their way to their examinations centre. Police Public Relations Officer, Abia State Command, Mr. Geoffrey Ogbonna, confirmed the incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Aba. He said seven persons including the driver died instantly, while two others died later in hospital. Ogbonna said the candidates were travelling on a Hiace bus with number plate Rivers XY 249. He explained that the driver, around 10.40am rammed into a truck with number plate Lagos XC 109 SLK, which was parked off the road at Obeaku-Ihie, Ugwunagbor Local Government Area of Abia State. |

Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846. John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946. Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860. John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960. Both were particularly concerned with civil rights. Both wives lost a child while living in the White House. Both Presidents were shot on a Friday. Both Presidents were shot in the head. Now it gets really weird. Lincoln's secretary was named Kennedy. Kennedy's Secretary was named Lincoln. Both were assassinated by Southerners. Both were succeeded by Southerners named Johnson. Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808. Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908. John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, was born in 1839. Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939. Both assassins were known by their three names. Both names are composed of fifteen letters. Now hang on to your seat. Lincoln was shot at the theater named "Ford." Kennedy was shot in a car called "Lincoln" made by "Ford." Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials. And here's the "kicker": A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe, Maryland. A week before Kennedy was shot, he was with Marilyn Monroe. AND... Lincoln was shot in a theater and the assassin ran to a warehouse... Kennedy was shot from a warehouse and the assassin ran to a theater... |
