"Biometric attendance stirs fear in the camp of "class stabbers"

Mixed reactions, especially that of tension, have trailed the introduction of automated Biometric attendance machine in the College of medicine, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku Ozalla. The innovative trap masterminded by the dean of the college, Professor Ekenze S. O. is one of his administration's latest plots targeted at arresting student's lackadaisical attitude and truant disposition towards class attendance and possibly, practicals. The PaRrOt had learned earlier today.

Students, in an unrestrained flare of emotions, took to various media platforms especially WhatsApp statuses to express their feelings ranging excitement, dismay fear and even indifference.

The portable electronic device preloaded with student's biometric information made it's first ever appearance today to the chagrin of unsuspecting student doctors. It was hung at the entrance of lecture rooms at the beginning of every class and unmounted 15 minutes after the onset of each lecture.
On thumb printing, it records each student's log in time while harvesting the student's bio-data for verification. It was gathered that daily records would be sent directly to the dean's office and would be used to compute percentage attendance and possible disqualification of defaulting candidates who couldn't meet up with the required minimum percentage, from writing their professional MBBS exams.

Reacting to this development, a student on an account of anonymity complained bitterly in an interaction with The PaRrOt, of having to miss his morning bath just to meet up with the 15 minutes deadline.

"I don't want to be disqualified from writing my final MBBS. I don't even want to give my village people a chance to laugh at me"... He said.

Also pleading anonymous, another student described the development as :"square peg in a round hole", citing clearly that there are important issues facing the students of which automated attendance register is the least.
He drove home his point by pointing out transportation issues among other challenges confronting the students.

"We live far away from the hospital complex and we don't even have a functional school bus. Imagine having to board one those rickety buses laying around and it breaks down on your way before you meet the 15 minutes deadline. Sadly, this device is going to be the only advanced technological device we would be having in our classes."

The PaRrOt clearly observed how many students expressed regrets of the impossibility of their classmates signing lecture attendance for them in their absence. One in a comical attempt at sarcasm clearly stated on his WhatsApp status :

"Can't someone dodge class in peace again? "
At the time of filing this report, the students at the UNEC part of the college are yet to see the arrival of the device, and it is not clear whether it would be extended to their end yet.
Even at that, a brain racking is currently ongoing as to come by a possible circumvention to the technological hindrance. But yet, the chronic class stabbers have awoken with a start to begin attending classes until a plan, if at all any, comes up to bypass the process.

"Maybe we should cut our thumbs and give to our friends to help us with fingerprinting". One joked. Until then attending of lectures has been reawakened in the academic life of most medical students.
