The Global Fund, an international financing organisation, has announced an additional humanitarian grant of $660 million to tackle HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria epidemic in Nigeria.



Its Executive Director, Mr Peter Sands, announced this at a news conference on Wednesday in Abuja. Sands noted that the grant will be made available in tranches for three years.
“Nigeria has remained a country in which Global Fund had invested tremendously in the past because of its highest burden of Malaria, Tuberculosis, HIV and AIDS.



“We have invested about $2.6 billion to tackle these epidemics in the past and we intend to do more to get more people on treatment.



“We appreciate the hard work in the outcome of the partnership between the government and global fund but we believe that we still have a lot of work to do.



“For HIV and AIDS, we want more people on treatment; we also want to prevent mother-to-child transmission. “We also want to reduce malaria related deaths and we want to ensure that the percentage of people on tuberculosis treatment increases.



“Above all, we will like to see a return on our investments,” he said. The Director-General, National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Dr Sani Aliyu, appreciated the continuous support of Global Fund in the healthcare sector of the country.

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos state on today granted a N50m bail to the immediate-past Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose, who is facing N2.2bn fraud charges.



Justice Mojisola Olatoregun, on Wednesday, granted Fayose bail with two sureties in like sum. The judge said one of the sureties is to sign N50m bond from a reputable bank; while the other must own a landed property within Lagos.

The sureties are to show evidence of three years’ tax clearance. Fayose was directed to deposit his passport in the court’s custody pending the outcome of the case.



The judge ordered that the ex-governor should be remanded in the prison custody until he meets the bail conditions.



She adjourned till November 19, 2018 for the commencement of trial, stressing that the trial would be conducted on a day-to-day basis.

Edo Police parades 72 suspects for cultism - The Edo State Police Command on Tuesday paraded 72 armed robbery, cultism and kidnapping suspects, who have been terrorising Benin metropolis over the past few weeks.



Briefing newsmen in Benin, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Johnson Kokumo, said 58 cult members linked to the killings of eight persons in different locations in the state were among those parade

There was heightened criminal activity viz cultism by rival cult groups: the , Eiye, Black Mafians, Vikings within the period 11th and 14th October, 2018, which led to death of eight persons," he said.



"The police quickly moved in and restored normalcy. 39 arms, 54 cartridges, three battle axes and five fake drinks were recovered from the 72 suspects.

It said a bug in its software meant information that people believed was private had been accessible by third parties.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the company knew about the issue in March but did not disclose it.



The WSJ quoted an internal Google memo that said doing so would draw "immediate regulatory interest".

In a statement, the firm said the issue was not serious enough to inform the public.



"Our Privacy and Data Protection Office reviewed this issue, looking at the type of data involved, whether we could accurately identify the users to inform, whether there was any evidence of misuse, and whether there were any actions a developer or user could take in response.



"None of these thresholds were met here."

Failed venture
Google+ was launched in 2011, quickly becoming known as a failed attempt to compete with Facebook.



Now, after several years of speculation that it was going to be shut down, Google is bringing Google+ for consumers to an end.

Google said it would continue to offer private Google+ powered networks for businesses currently using the software.



"It has not achieved broad consumer or developer adoption, and has seen limited user interaction with apps," wrote Ben Smith, Google's vice president of engineering, in a blog post on Monday.

Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr, has invited Ahmed Musa and 23 other players for this month’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against Libya.



According to the Nigeria Football Federation website, Rohr called up Alex Iwobi, William Ekong and Olaoluwa Aina. All three players missed the 3-0 win over Seychelles in Mahe last month due to injury.
