Education / Sex Education: Parents, Don’t Shy Away From Educating Your Children by lollybash: 12:19pm On Nov 13, 2017
Sex education means instruction on matters which are related to human sexuality.

Sex education revolves around all the necessary things involved in sexual relationships. Age, emotions, responsibilities, consent, risks, health, advantages, and disadvantages.

Looking at the rate of teenage pregnancies in Nigeria today, it is obvious that most children are ignorant of the risks involved in a sexual relationship. Would we blame this on parents, schools, society or even the government?

Yes, each of the mentioned institutions has its own share of the blame, but the bulk of it lies with the parents, and especially mothers.

Some Nigerian parents shy away or perhaps sees it as an immoral act to discuss sexual relationships with their children. Some even view it as a taboo.

Sex education is very important and should be encouraged in a society.

Educating children on sexual relationships would help to reduce the rate of teenage pregnancies being recorded across the country, and also go a long way to reduce the risks involved having unprotected sex and all other negativity attached.

Sex education should not only be peculiar to female children and so should educating a child on sexual relationship not be the sole responsibility of mothers.

Fathers can also do more in educating their children on sexual relationship, as it is perceived that most female children are closer and more open to their fathers than their mothers.

As soon as a child approaches puberty stage, parents should be conscious of the need to educate the child on sexual relationships.

Below are some tips to guide parents who find it difficult or who are shy to discuss sexual relationships with their children or wards.

1. Be friendly: some parents are in the habit of frowning at their children. Yes, children need to be disciplined but everything should be done moderately.

If you are a parent that your children are always glad when you plan to travel, then you need to work on your temper. No child would want to discuss intimate issues with an unfriendly parent. The fear of “I don’t know how daddy/ mummy would take it” would always be a barrier.

2. Be patient: As parents, you have to be patient with your children. Don’t be in a hurry to get information from them. When he or she mentioned meeting a new friend, don’t be in a rush to know all that transpired between them.

Take it cool, and the child would voluntarily divulge all, after which you can give your advice. Parents don’t be too forward.

3. Practice what you preach: As parents, be examples to your children. Children learn fast and tend to replicate what they learn from their parents. When you ask a child to avoid night outings, make sure you don’t also keep late nights.

4. Discuss health issues: Health they say is wealth, form the habit of having discussions that relate to health with your children, from there you can divert to the risks involved in having unhealthy sexual relationships

5. Books: There are so many available books on sexual relationships. Form the habit of purchasing such books, and encourage your children to read them. Don’t just stop there, ask them what they have learnt from it and make contributions to it too.
