The whole world for some months now have been engulfed in the Corona Virus pandemic. Some countries are more hit than others. Economic activities have been shut down totally or partially , which has resulted in so many businesses being shut down or down sizing in staff strength . This brings to the fore that decision must be made on the part of the management on who should be declared redundant and who should be retained. Many employees before now believe that they are doing a good job as employees, but have you ever wondered what your supervisor or employers think about your work. Below are some tips on how to be “near indispensable “ in your work place: 1. Be a part of the solution : Quit whining about the wrong things in your organization and start being a solution . When you go to your boss with one problem, at least have one suggestion in mind for a solution. Even if your suggestion is not taken, you will come through as a problem solver, with the good of the organization in mind and not a grumbler or complainer. 2. Volunteer for new projects: Being able to volunteer when your boss needs assistance around some new tasks is a great way to show and create value. Do not be too busy to take on additional projects or stand in for an absent colleague if the timing does not get in the way of your present duties. Endeavor to get comfortable with new work pressures. 3. Focus on results and not just tasks: It is not how many duties you get involved in, but how productive you were on it. Do not laze around duties. Strive to have quantitative results on your tasks. 4. Behave professionally: Work place is a place to work. Do not miss deadlines, do not forget to respond to emails , do not be reminded to follow up when you need to. Spending company time on staff gossips, or browsing the web with your private tasks in mind should not be. Overall, do what you are paid to do. 5. Upgrade your skills: Whether you are involved in the domestic or corporate sector, if there are some aspects of your work that needs to be upgraded, then upgrade. Go online and learn how to be better . Practice until you get better. Do not make excuses that you do no know how to carry out a task that had hitherto been the duties of another staff who is not available. Learn how each department works. |
