That the gender difference is changing in the ob-gyn specialty like in most other specialties does not take away the vital service that male ob-gyns have given to womenfolk and preservation of female health. Male ob-gyns as well as in other allied health professions are more than happy to bequeath more of the responsibility to female health professionals who are finally waking up to the fact that women are just as knowledgeable to handle anything from child care services to missions on the ISS.

This is not engineering. Humans are not cars, where you have to be passionate about engines or laws of physics to become an engineer. Most times, the only reason that's good enough for health professionals is to save lives.

And it’s a skewed stat. As late as 1990, only 22.4% of all ob-gyns in the US were females.

So what changed within 22 years (1990-2012). I’d tell you:

Female applicants into medical school outnumbered male applicants in 2003. So we had more females entering the medical profession, and by design (in fact expectedly) most of them opted more to do their residency in specialties that appealed more to their feminism. Such as ob-gyn and pediatrics. To buttress my point, 75% of RESIDENTS TRAINING IN PEDIATRICS are females.

It is similar to a student in high school who doesn’t like maths going on to do history or arts in college. And residency in the US is by slots. With more applications from females than males, more females got in. This isn’t rocket science. Even an uneducated cobbler would understand this.
But that isn’t all. There’s this thing called gender-bias in medical specialties. It is very similar to what happens in engineering. Engineering is a guy thing, so even girls that would do well in engineering just put it off like it’s a “guy thing.”

That is also happening in ob-gyn. More and more male prospective residents are saying, yeah well, ob-gyn is a female specialty, let’s move on to male specialties like orthopedic surgery or radiology. It’s similar to the same way males interested in the health sector in Nigeria overwhelmingly shy away from Nursing, despite the fact that male nurses are fairly better (I’m speaking from experience).

So it has nothing to do with creepiness. Male doctor trainees are just leaving the fields the women felt they were more inclined to, to fields where women don’t feel so connected to. It’s this gender equality thing playing out all over again (make no mistake, I applaud it).

I’m a radiographer (yea, in Nigeria we do everything from HSG in women to KUBs where we have to insert tubes into joysticks, to rectal exams where we have to look up someone’s ass-crack (yeah, I guess for a psycho, that’d be fun) to theater runs where we have to assist orthopedic surgeons), and if I had to study medicine, I’d either specialize in radiology or neurosurgery. That’s where all the fun is. The spate of advancements in radiology in recent years is mind-blowing (from t-waves to elastography). Let’s not talk about neurosurgery.
