The New National Universities Commission (NUC) Benchmarks:


1. The new pass mark for all courses in all the Universities in Nigeria is 45% according to the new NUC benchmark on minimum academic standards in Nigerian Universities.


2. The new pass grade now in view of the above becomes “D” or 45% and above instead of the previous “E”. Therefore wherever the former pass mark of 40% or E is used herein should be read to mean 45% or D.




3. With effect from the 2013/2014 Academic session, Pass degree will be abolished in the University of Nigeria in accordance with the decision of the NUC. This means that students that was admitted from the year 2012 backward (i.e. 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, …, to when the world began) will not be affected by this new change.

Tertiary Institutions, Secondary and Primary Schools in Osun State have been given the greenlight by the state government to reopen Monday, September 21st, 2020,



I understands that, the Federal Government is not against the preparations by some states to fully reopen schools but advised the states to be guided by the experiences of countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and France. 



Albeit, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have a different view pertaining to the reopening of schools. The striking lecturers yesterday kicked against such preparations, saying; "It's suicidal to reopen universities now!".




In the same light, the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (SSANU) has warned that except the federal government addresses its own issues, non teaching staff would also proceed on strike as soon as schools are reopened.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said that it is not ready to call off the current strike if the Federal Government does not address its demands. The ASUU President made this known while speaking at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT).

According to him, students would be the major beneficiaries of the demands and urged them to support the demands as they are genuine and in the interest of the nation.

UNICAL Mass Communication Department Gets Full Accreditation From NUC.


The National Universities Commission, NUC has approved accreditation for the department of Mass Communication in the University of Calabar, Calabar, Cross River State Nigeria.



The full accreditation was contained in a letter by Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, Executive Secretary, NUC with Ref. No: NUC/AP/F08/Vol.II/13 and dated 29th of July, 2020 and signed by Dr. N. B., Director, Academic Planning, NUC.




The letter titled “RE: RESOURCE ASSESSMENT VISIT TO PROPOSED ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES”, stated that the accreditation is for the establishment of full-time mode of Mass Communication programme to be run in the main campus of UNICAL.




“I am directed to inform the Vice-Chancellor that the Executive Secretary has considered and approved the establishment of full-time mode of Mass Communication programme to be run in the main campus of the University, only, effective 2020/2021 academic session.

Amid the covid19 pandemic the Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities will please recall that, as part of the measures to contain and prevent the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), the Federal Govemment, through the Federal Ministry of Education, ordered the immediate closure of all schools, including Universities on 23 March, 2020. All schools have since remained closed, until the recent decision to allow only Exiting Classes to resume to enable final year students to participate in the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination including other examinations, to be conducted by NECO, NABTEB and NBAIS.



As Vice-Chancellors are already aware, following the gradual easing of the restrictions as part of the management of COVID-19, there have been several stakeholder consultations as well as mectings with the Honourable Minister of Education with the attendant clamour by concermed citizens for the reopening of Higher Education Institutions (HEIS) and resumption of academic activities.
