Dating And Meet-up Zone › How To Meet Genuine Nigerian Singles Safely Online (lovisland Dating) by lovisland(op): 2:16am On Aug 03
Online dating in Nigeria works. The problem is not that people here are not looking for something real, it is that a few bad actors have made everybody suspicious of everybody. So before you download any app or agree to meet anyone, here are the rules that actually keep you safe. I have put them in the order that matters.

1. Video call before you meet. Not a voice call, video.
A catfish can steal photos. A catfish cannot fake a live face on demand. Ask for a short video call early. If the person always has an excuse (network bad, camera spoilt, shy), that is your answer. You just saved yourself transport money and a wasted Saturday.

2. Reverse image search their photos.
Save the picture, drop it into Google Images. If the same face comes up on ten profiles with ten different names, you have found a stolen photo. This takes thirty seconds and catches most fake profiles.

3. Never send money. Not once, not small, not for data.
This is the one that costs people the most. Any story that ends with an account number is a script, no matter how sweet the person has been. Real people who like you do not ask you to fund them in week one.

4. First meeting: public place, daytime, your own transport.
Eatery, mall, busy cafe. Not their house, not your house, not a quiet spot. Arrange your own way there and your own way back so you are never depending on them to leave.

5. Tell one person where you are going.
Send a friend the name, the photo, the location and the time. Share your live location for the duration. It costs you nothing and it changes everything if something goes wrong.

6. Watch for the rush.
Love bombing is a tactic. If someone is calling you their soulmate in three days and pushing to move off the app immediately, slow down. Genuine people are comfortable with your pace.

7. Keep the chat on the app until you trust them.
Once you move to WhatsApp you lose the reporting and blocking tools. Stay on-platform while you are still working out who this person is.

Now, full disclosure, I work on a dating app called Lovisland, and we built it around exactly these problems.

Free chat, so you are not paying before you can even say hello. Free video calling built in, so you can verify someone before you spend money going to meet them. Profiles show what the person is actually looking for, so you are not guessing. And it is built for Nigerian cities, Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, Ibadan, rather than assuming everyone lives abroad.

It is free to join and I am not going to pretend we are perfect, we are still growing. Which is why I would rather hear from the house than talk at you:

What annoys you most about dating apps in Nigeria right now?
If free video calling exists, does it actually make you trust a person more, or does it change nothing?
What single feature would make you keep a dating app instead of deleting it after one week?

I will read every reply. Honest criticism is more useful to me than praise, so do not hold back.
