European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)UCL: PSG Vs Liverpool, Today 9PM by Lucasinho(op):
Match preview:

Seasoned Champions League winners meet the perennial also-rans in Wednesday's last-16 first leg, as Paris Saint-Germain welcome Liverpool to their Parc des Princes base for a heavyweight encounter.

Arne Slot's men more or less swept aside the competition to top the league phase table, while the Ligue 1 champions annihilated Brest 10-0 on aggregate during a playoff pummelling.

The much-coveted European crown continued to elude PSG during the golden era of Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar, since when the powers-that-be have moved away from signing the superstars of today to focus on nurturing the superstars of tomorrow with Luis Enrique's guidance.

Les Parisiens' new-look crop were at serious risk of an embarrassing early exit from Europe, but a three-game winning sequence - including a 4-2 comeback job over Manchester City - saved their league phase bacon before they squared up to familiar opposition in the playoff round.

Showing no mercy to European novices Brest, PSG followed up a 3-0 first-leg success with a 7-0 second-leg slaughter to make it five wins on the spin in Europe's top tournament; not since the 1994-95 season have they won more successive Champions League matches.

The calibre of opponent will now kick up a notch for Enrique's side, but preparations for Wednesday's clash of the titans could hardly have gone better, as a comprehensive 4-1 Ligue 1 win over Lille extended their victorious streak to a terrific 10 matches across all competitions.

In fact, only one of the hosts' last 20 matches across all competitions has not ended in triumph - a 1-1 home draw with Reims towards the end of January - and to the surprise of no-one, they are surging towards their customary top-flight crown as they sit 13 points clear at the Ligue 1 summit.

However, French top-flight titles have been bread and butter for the capital giants for some time, whereas the Champions League last-16 curse has often bedevilled PSG, who have been eliminated from the competition at this stage in five of the last eight seasons.

PSG could do worse than take a leaf out of Liverpool's book when it comes to conquering the continent, and a dead-rubber defeat against PSV Eindhoven aside, the Reds swept aside their other continental foes with minimal difficulty during the league phase.

Seven wins from Slot's first seven Champions League games in charge preceded that inconsequential 3-2 loss in the Netherlands on matchday eight, but the Reds still comfortably topped the league-phase rankings and remain in hot pursuit of a domestic and continental treble.

Like PSG, the Merseyside mammoths also hold a 13-point lead atop the Premier League rankings courtesy of back-to-back 2-0 wins over Manchester City and Newcastle United in their last two games, and the defence of their EFL Cup title will conclude on March 16 against an Anthony Gordon-less Newcastle United in the final.

The Reds may head into Wednesday's first leg on a three-game losing run in Champions League knockout games, but every one of those defeats was to Real Madrid - one of their league-phase victims - and they are the only side yet to lose an away game in the English top flight this season.

The overall away picture is less pleasant for Liverpool, who only have three wins to show from their last nine road matches across all tournaments, and the Premier League leaders are also without victory in five straight away games versus French sides in Europe since taking down Marseille in September 2008.

That winless sequence includes a 2-1 reverse to PSG during the sides' most recent meeting in November 2018, but Jurgen Klopp had overseen a 3-2 Anfield success a couple of months beforehand, and either Aston Villa or Club Brugge will be waiting with bated breath for the winner of this titanic tussle in the quarter-finals.

Having come through their thumping of Lille with no new injury concerns, PSG are blessed with a fully-fit squad for Wednesday's first leg, where Enrique is blessed with the best kind of selection concerns all over the field.

A handful of alterations from the triumph over Les Dogues ought to see Vitinha, Willian Pacho and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia - a rumoured transfer target for Liverpool in January - come back into the XI, where captain Marquinhos is set for a milestone appearance.

The experienced centre-back could make his 100th Champions League start on Wednesday, becoming the first player to do so exclusively for a French club and just the fourth Brazilian after Roberto Carlos, Dani Alves and Thiago Silva.

Liverpool are not quite as fortunate on the injury front, with only Tyler Morton (shoulder), Conor Bradley (hamstring) and Joe Gomez (hamstring) definitely out, but Cody Gakpo is a doubt due to a knock.

Teenager Amara Nallo, sent off just four minutes into his Liverpool debut against PSV, serves a suspension too, but the irresistible force that is Mohamed Salah will be bidding to extend an all-time Champions League record.

Already on course for the greatest individual Premier League season ever, the 32-year-old has been involved in 20 goals from 30 UCL knockout matches, more than any other African player; Samuel Eto'o and Didier Drogba both managed 19.

Paris Saint-Germain possible starting lineup:
Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Ruiz, Vitinha, Neves; Kvaratskhelia, Dembele, Barcola

Liverpool possible starting lineup:
Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Szoboszlai, Diaz; Jota

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Aston Villa Vs Liverpool (2 - 2) On 19th February 2025 by Lucasinho(op): 7:12pm On Feb 19, 2025
EPL: Aston Villa vs. Liverpool

The gap between first and second in the Premier League table could be a staggering 10 points by the close of play on Wednesday night, if Liverpool can get the better of Aston Villa.

Arne Slot's men broke the 60-point barrier over the weekend, eking out a nervy 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, while their hosts had to accept a 1-1 draw with lowly Ipswich Town.

Likely still feeling the effects of their midweek Merseyside derby mayhem - both physically and psychologically - Liverpool appeared to be coasting to victory over Wolves at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, only to nearly throw their hard work down the drain in the second half.

Luis Diaz's unorthodox opener off his midriff preceded Mohamed Salah's nonchalant penalty, although the league leaders were then guilty of sloppy pass after sloppy pass in the second half, when Matheus Cunha's stunning 20-yard strike was just reward for Wolves' plucky efforts.

However, there would be no James Tarkowski moment for Vitor Pereira's men as Liverpool clung on for a priceless three points, despite not mustering a single shot on target in the second 45, the first time that has happened for the Reds in a Premier League half at Anfield since records began.

Nevertheless, Slot's shot-shy men have now re-established their seven-point buffer over a shot-shy Arsenal, who do not return to action until Saturday, meaning that their advantage will stretch into the double figures with a 19th top-flight win of the season on Wednesday.

The trip to the West Midlands kicks off a daunting three-match sequence between now and the end of the month for Liverpool, though, as their title mettle will also be tested in Sunday's trip to Manchester City and the visit of Newcastle United to Anfield on February 26.

For the time being, the Reds' sole goal is to right some recent wrongs on the road, where they have only won two of their last seven matches across all competitions; the Premier League picture makes for more pleasant reading, though, as they are still unbeaten away from home in the 2024-25 top flight.

Speaking of lengthy unbeaten runs, Aston Villa stretched their sequence without defeat at Villa Park to 12 matches in all competitions at the weekend, but a measly one point against 10-man Ipswich may have felt like a loss for Unai Emery and co.

The die was seemingly cast when Axel Tuanzebe was made to take the walk of shame, but the Tractor Boys defied the odds to take the lead through Liam Delap, before Ollie Watkins was in the right place at the right time to tap home after Marcus Rashford's free kick struck the woodwork.

Time and time again, Villa were thwarted by inspired Ipswich debutant Alex Palmer in between the sticks, and their top-four hopes have now diminished further; Emery's ninth-placed crop are six points below Manchester City in the final Champions League position.

Of course, Villa could still punch their ticket to next season's European Cup by winning the current edition, but an underwhelming run of just two wins from seven in all tournaments is not befitting of continental champions, nor is their failure to keep a clean sheet in any of their last eight at home.

Furthermore, November's 2-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield extended Villa's winless run versus the Reds to nine matches since their unforgettable 7-2 annihilation in 2020, the game that took place just a few hours before the infamous David Coote video was recorded.

Team News:

After taking a heavy knock during the four-goal stalemate with Everton, Liverpool's Cody Gakpo was absent from the squad for the win over Wolves, and Slot has conceded that the attacker is likely to sit this one out as well.

Two men who will also not be in contention for the midweek fixture are Tyler Morton (shoulder) and Joe Gomez (hamstring), but Curtis Jones is back from a ban and could now come in for Dominik Szoboszlai as Slot manages a particularly hectic two weeks.

Darwin Nunez and Kostas Tsimikas may also be the beneficiaries of some rotation too, but there should be no respite for hotshot Salah; the 32-year-old's next assist away from home in the Premier League will be his 10th of the season, a figure only Cesc Fabregas and Muzzy Izzet have previously achieved in a single campaign in the competition.

As for the hosts, Emery's defensive crisis is showing no signs of abating, as Boubacar Kamara came off just 16 minutes into the draw with Ipswich and is now unavailable for the time being.

Pau Torres (ankle), Ross Barkley (calf) and Amadou Onana (thigh) welcome Kamara into the infirmary, while , Ezri Konsa (unspecified), Matty Cash (unspecified) and Leon Bailey will all need late fitness tests.

Thankfully for the Spaniard, Tyrone Mings has recovered from a minor knee problem and could slot in for Kamara at the back, while a first start should await Manchester United loanee Rashford after another positive cameo off the bench.

Aston Villa possible starting lineup:
Martinez; Garcia, Mings, Disasi, Digne; Tielemans, McGinn; Ramsey, Rogers, Rashford; Watkins

Liverpool possible starting lineup:
Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Tsimikas; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Jones, Diaz; Nunez

So many dead people, I mean folks who came from their graves are attending churches, are also in the streets and at your markets. Selling and buying. In the churches, most of them choir leaders and members of choristers oh my God.

This is completely disheartening and at the same confusing. What can we do? You need to have an eye 👁️ to see and ear to hear, or you are doomed forever. Oh men, who would save you from the wrath to come??. Only CHRIST JESUS!

I saw this and I am really disturbed how men are not able to see the truth.
