Fitness without medical checks dangerous - Health Expert warns By Lucy A medical expert, Dr Chukwudi Njelita, has urged Nigerians to embrace regular medical check-ups, warning that physical fitness alone does not guarantee protection against sudden death and other health emergencies. Njelita, Chief Medical Director, Rock Foundation Hospital, Awka, made the call on Tuesday in Awka at the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Anambra Chapter End-of-Year Lectures and Recognition Ceremony. He spoke while delivering a lecture entitled 'Sudden Death Phenomenon: Why Fitness Alone Is Not Enough', at the event. The programme marked the climax of the two-day 2025 SWAN Week and also featured a medical outreach for journalists in the state. The medical expert noted that many people wrongly assume that being physically active automatically translates to good health. He said that several underlying medical conditions often remain undetected without routine medical examinations. According to him, ailments such as hypertension, heart disease and metabolic disorders could be silent for years, only manifesting suddenly with fatal consequences if not diagnosed early. Njelita explained that irregular readings of vital health indicators, when left unchecked, could lead to sudden collapse or death, even among individuals who appear healthy. He therefore advised adults, especially those above 40 years, to undergo periodic medical screening, including blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar tests and cardiovascular assessments. “Irregular readings of vital health indicators can result in medical emergencies such as syncope, diabetes and stroke. “Blood pressure can be managed but not cured; hence, individuals with high or low blood pressure must adhere strictly to prescribed medications. “People above 40 years should take deliberate preventive measures against stroke and avoid excessive or strenuous exercise that could trigger unhealthy changes in blood pressure or heart rate,” he said. Also speaking, Dr Henry Duru of the Department of Mass Communication, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, urged the Anambra Government to prioritise sports as a key economic sector. Duru said sports had become a major industry and image-building tool for developed nations, adding that Anambra was yet to fully harness opportunities in the sports economy. He identified strategic Public-Private Partnerships and purpose-driven infrastructure development as critical to transforming the sector,. “There is also a need for modern, multi-purpose sports infrastructure, which is essential for talent discovery, athlete development and hosting commercially viable competitions,” he said. Chairman of the occasion, Chief Paul Nwosu, described the event as enlightening and commended SWAN for providing a platform for robust discussions on sports and public health. Nwosu, a former Commissioner for Information in Anambra, urged government to consider the issues raised as constructive public feedback and encouraged participants to take their health seriously. The ceremony featured awards recognising contributions to sports development, public health and security in Anambra State. Honourees included Mr Christian Aburime, Press Secretary to Gov. Chukwuma Soludo, for his support for sports journalism and CP Ikioye Orutugu, Anambra Commissioner of Police, for strengthening security through community policing. Aliyu said VCDP attained the milestone through proper profiling of beneficiaries and strong engagement with government at all levels, religious and community leaders, as well as the media. She added that the programme also prioritised continuous training of farmers on good agricultural practices, the introduction of dry season rice farming and value chain financing, among other interventions. Aliyu highlighted insecurity, adverse effects of climate change, high input costs driven by inflation, and low literacy levels among farmers, which limit the adoption of innovative farming techniques; as the major challenges affecting the implementation of the VCDP project. Also speaking, Mr Nura Lawal, Programme Monitoring and Evaluation Advisor, IFAD-VCDP, Abuja, said the Federal Government/IFAD project focuses on rice and cassava value chains in nine states. He listed Anambra, Benue, Ebonyi, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Enugu and Taraba as the beneficiary states. I can never forget that loss. “Now, we have a hospital right here in our community. That alone gives us peace of mind,” she said. The chamber’s new President, Mr Chinedu Nwonu identified the challenges at the 36th Annual general meeting of the chamber and Business Community Engagement. Nwonu described the excessive checkpoints on roads leading into and out of Onitsha as a major deterrent to investors. “Before now, we had people from Cameroon, East and Southern Africa coming to Onitsha to do business. "That is no longer the case, mainly because of the harassment and delays on the roads,” he said. He also decried the issue of multiple taxation. EFCC pledges to obey court order, halts actions against Anambra Anglican Bishop The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has assured the Awka High Court in Anambra, that it will halt all actions against Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim, Bishop of Awka Diocese, over the alleged sale of church lands pending the case’s determination. Counsel to the EFCC, Mr C. A. Okoli, told the court that the EFCC would maintain the status quo and refrain from any further actions against Ibezim pending the court’s decision. Okoli explained that the invitation letter to the Ibezim, dated Oct. 7, was issued before the Commission became aware of the pending court case. “We are law-abiding and will stay all actions pending the determination of the substantive application. "We are however, requesting a date for hearing," he said. Earlier, Ibezim, represented by his counsel, Mr Beluolisa Nwofor (SAN), informed the court that both parties had agreed the EFCC would refrain from inviting, arresting, or taking any further action against the Archbishop while the case is pending. Nwofor also urged the court to suspend the EFCC’s invitation letter dated Oct.7, and signed by Farouk Abdullah on behalf of the Acting Zonal Director, Enugu, until the case is determined. The Presiding Judge, Justice Peace Otti, consequently directed that a hearing notice be issued to the second respondent, Mr Echezona Onuigbo, who was absent in court. Otti adjourned the matter until Nov. 27, for hearing of the substantive application and any other pending motions. Recall that a petition dated July 28, was submitted to the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the EFCC by Chief G. Tagbo (SAN), on behalf of Mr Echezona Onuigbo. The petition alleges that Bishop Ibezim had no right or authority to sell any church property, as the Church’s Board of Trustees (BoT) are the legal custodians of such assets.

Wife of Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo has condemned the recent assault on a female member of the National Youth Service Corps allegedly carried out by a local vigilante officer. In a statement released in Awka, Soludo expressed deep concern over the incident, describing it as unacceptable, disturbing and dehumanising. Anambra Police Command said its identified and arrested a vigilante member who allegedly assaulted the female corps member at Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area. Chukwuma Soludo’s administration, either. “There are always rules of engagement in such situations, and they must prioritise dignity, civility, and respect,” she said. Soludo urged the authorities to investigate the matter and implement measures to ensure justice and prevent a recurrence of such an incident. “Anambra’s image is priceless. We must guard it jealously,” she said. |
