FamilyWIFE BATTERY: My Road To Redemption by lulu69(op): 12:02pm On Jun 06, 2015
by Lucas Togan

I finally stopped beating my wife just last weekend. And I vowed never to touch her again. The reason for this paradigm shift is what I want to share in this article.

In the few years that I've been married, I have often come to the tipping point of giving my wife a thorough beating. I have often been tempted to end a heated dispute with a deafening slap. Sometimes I threaten her with physical abuse (Don't lie, you've been there too). In all these cases, I have only succeeded (or is it failed?) once in punching her arm. An incident that I deeply regret till today. I'm not sure if I felt sorry for hitting her or disgrace and disgust at myself for having stooped so low.

My wife is a very strong woman and you'd have to really be in control to convince her on many issues. Let's just say she has her own voice and refuses to be silenced for no good reason. This attribute is very rare in my society for ladies. I was brought up in a society that promotes male superiority over the woman. I belong to a religion that relegates the female folk on all possible fronts to background responsibilities. I enjoy the privilege of knowing that I can get away with almost anything I do to my wife in this society. Even her folks would accommodate many of my excesses should I choose to subject her to such. So little wonder that I feel so much venom when she does not succumb to my whims and wishes as often as I want her to.

However, being the type of person that self scrutinizes often, I decided to investigate the root of my disposition by asking these questions:

1. The rage I feel when my wife challenges me on certain issues - is it nature or was I nurtured to feel that rage? If my younger brother or friend (emphasis on younger male), who's taller, bigger and obviously stronger than me, were to challenge me on same issues will I feel the same rage? If I do, will it be to same extent? Will I be as condescending in my reproach of fellow males as I am of my wife?

2. If I married Ronda Rousey, the MMA champion, will I feel the same rage as I do towards the woman I married? - knowing that Ronda will kick my ass will calm me down considerably I'm sure.

3. What if I ended up with a soldier wife who's well trained in all combat situations and can physically defend herself? Will I ever raise my hands on her or ever think of striking her?

The answer to the questions above is quite obvious. Evidently my position of authority will be greatly hampered should I find myself in any of these situations. That begs the question - can wife battery be justified in any guise? I think every man who has thought about beating his wife is guilty of wife battery because only a coward man hits or thinks of hitting a woman (especially one that can't defend herself physically). This warped ideology in itself is the problem with my society - the misrepresentation of cowardice for authority.

In southwest Nigeria, women are taught absolute submission from the tender age of 5. It is almost as if marriage is a trophy to be achieved in this lifetime and making that marriage work is her ultimate goal in life. Men on the other hand, are prepped with endless doses of superiority complex pills right from boyhood to the extent that they assume this demi-god mentality and inevitably often act with impunity towards the wife.

It is this superiority complex that I seek to address here. I am a firm believer in spanking or flogging children as a form of reproach. I was often spanked and I turned out pretty fine. But spanking an adult? Naaaa! Not done. Should never be done. The thing about beating a woman is that you are announcing that she is a child. If she is truly a child then you the man should be charged with pedophilia for marrying a minor. She is not a minor. That she is your wife already confirms her adulthood because only adults concede to marriage. If you have ever as much as thought of hitting a woman, you are guilty of wife battery because it all starts in the mind. Only a question of time before it is made manifest. Men should think of women as adults and that may just help a bit.

I would like to make clear here that most movements that advocate against domestic violence are getting their tactics wrong. The fight should be taken to the root of the problem - society and religion. We the people must stop feeding men with these superiority mentality and must start to encourage the females to self identify early in life. When a woman understands herself and loves herself she can better identify a life partner that she naturally connects with. She should not be a servant wife but a partner wife who understands that she has rights just as the man.

I have since stopped "beating" my wife and realized that loving her gets her to do the things I want faster and better than before. I am happier and healthier. Above all these I am finally free of the many thoughts of battery because each time it crosses my mind I think of her as Ronda...lol.

(CAVEAT: A woman that hits a man and gets an ass whooping is guilty of beating an adult and self defence on the part of the man is a good excuse.)

Maybe because those of us abroad are actually smarter and more informed?

dude... do you realize that as a landlord your property depreciates ( looses value) faster the more people are living in it? That stipulation is there so that his tenants don't flood his property with permanent "visitors" who aren't paying him. Hospitality be damned business is business.

You should let more capable people make the important decisions.
You live abroad and are smarter yet you spell "lose" like that? Issorai.

by Lucas TOGAN

I'm ashamed of myself this morning. I am the problem with my country. I will not blame any leader ever again for the monster that I have become. I have lost my humanity in the pursuit of my daily bread.

A few years back, I hitched an Abuja bound ride from Ibadan. I was first to board the "cha cha tokunbo" (chacha means "brown" new not "brand new" and tokunbo is second hand ~ get used to the oxymoron) Toyota highlander SUV. As we moved, he hailed a lady on a bike bound for the official Abuja park. She liked the car but was skeptic seeing just two guys in the front seats. To allay her fears, I told her I had just boarded a few minutes earlier. She immediately asked to see IDs - like that would have prevented us from hurting her if we were so inclined. She finally boarded and we were soon on our way. Just after Okene (mid- western Nigeria), we witnessed a ghastly motor accident. Apparently there had been a head-on collision between two Toyota Hiace filled-to-capacity commercial transporters (Nigeria's major means of inter-state travel).

The scene was gory to say the least. The driver slowed just enough for all of us to catch the full picture of events. Mangled bodies in the front seat, a man had half his torso outside the front window while the lower one was stuck in the car. Some injured people lying here and there. Dead ones lying lifeless elsewhere. The vehicles looked more like mangled metals than what they used to be just a few minutes earlier. Just as I thought the driver was going to clear and park to allow us offer some assistance, he accelerated to my utter shock and disbelief. Naturally I screamed, "what are you doing!? We should go and help those guys." His reply was even more shocking - "I am a nurse but I can't help them. You see, this car is for someone in my hospital. When I'm off duty, I buy and deliver cars to people. Besides, the closest hospital to where we are right now is half an hour's drive in the opposite direction. I can't afford blood on these seats and neither can I afford the time it would cost me to help them to the hospital. Sorry sir. And I know you don't want to drop either." Though I hated to admit it, he was right - I didn't want to drop. I couldn't say anything to that. The other passengers didn't say much other than the generic "eyas"(the sound we make when we sympathize with a situation or person) and mundane prayers to God for fortitude to bare losses. As he drove on, I felt like my soul was being dragged reluctantly from the scene.

That experience has stayed with me ever since and I've blamed myself for what I didn't do. I hated my excuses. I hated that I understood the driver's position and reasonable predicament. I blamed the system for rubbing me of my humanity. I blamed everyone and anyone for my inability to help those guys.

This morning, it happened again.

As I hit the road to work this morning, I saw a huge ball of fire on 3rd mainland bridge. I initially thought it was these political thugs fighting for either party because there had been pockets of violence since Sunday. As we approached, it became obvious it was a vehicle of sorts. As we leveled up, I saw a man on fire and still moving. I immediately asked the driver if he had an extinguisher and he said yes. I motioned that he park but he said "No O! We have already passed him now." And he continued driving. I looked back and no one - not a single car parked to help. Everyone was just "flying" off to their destinations. That Okene feeling enveloped me again. The man then said what completely killed my spirit - "Eya, and he woke up hail and hearty this morning O. God is in control." That's when I got mad - REALLY MAD.

"Sir, please keep quiet." I screamed. "We all ought to be ashamed of our collective selves. You have an extinguisher you did not stop. All the other cars did not stop either. My own excuse is that I am not the one driving. No excuse is good enough. We should help people. Our problem is not government. We are a sick sick people. We have no human feelings anymore. We are the problem with Nigeria. The problem with us is us. No leader can change a sick lot like us sir, so please stop the excuses and the prayers. You and I are the problem because even if I was driving I don't know if I'd have stopped." I got out of his car and banged the door. I wasn't mad at him. I was mad at us.

I have henceforth decided not to criticize any leader again. I will work doubly hard on becoming the person I want to see in society. I will dedicate the rest of my life to changing myself, my family, my community then the larger society. I will henceforth channel my evolution towards becoming a better human being.

I DIDN'T KNOW I WAS SO EMOTIONALLY BANKRUPT.

FamilyHomophobia! - Nature Or Nurture? by lulu69(op): 4:42pm On Feb 02, 2015
Ten months ago, I was a hundred per cent homophobic. Today, I'm less bias. You want to know what happened? I'll tell you.

I had a gay post last year on this page where I posited that having not taken part in birthing a child, gay people had no right to raise children. Academically, I still hold that position but when the premise is changed (which is what Bayero did) and viewed from the angle of the many homeless kids who are getting care and love from these people or the many abusive heterosexual homes who mess these kids up much more than is being perceived by being raised in a gay home, then we have a whole new discussion on our hands.

As the debate raged on and people made their different submissions and comments (championed by Bayero ofcourse), I started to ask myself "is homophobia nature or nurture?" This thought made me explore the matter.

What is homophpbia?

According to Wikipedia, Homophobia encompasses a range of negative attitudes and feelings toward homosexuality or people who are identified or perceived as being LGBT. It can be expressed as antipathy, contempt, prejudice, aversion, or hatred, may be based on irrational fear, and is sometimes related to religious beliefs.

Merriam-Webster says "irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals"

It is interesting and pertinent to note that homosexuality was once viewed as a mental condition. In my part of the world, it is still viewed as such and more often as a spiritual battle lost by gay people. To us, it is the devil - SIMPLE.

But should this blanket definition suffice? Can this bias stand critical scrutiny? Are we born with gay bias or did we learn to hate them?
In my opinion, which is informed by my limited knowledge of human anatomy, I find that the vagina expands and gets wet in anticipation for the entrance of the penis. I am not sure if the anus is designed to do that as well. But that's how far I've come with logically defending my bias. However, since homosexuality is much more than sex, I realised my argument was weak. So I asked myself these questions:

Am I homophobic by nature or is it my society that shaped my bias?

If I lived in a more gay tolerant society, will my position change overtime?

If my boss was gay, will I quit?

If I had gay team mates, will I quit the team?

If a gay man saved my life, will I be more tolerant?

If I had a gay offspring or sibling, what would I do?

In pondering these, I found that the only reason I still hold any shred of homophobia is because I lack the opportunity to interact with gay people. Being a strong advocate of judging people by contents of their character, I increasingly see the error in hating someone for who they choose to sleep with. I have realised that in this honest self evaluation and assessment, I am better equipped mentally to deal with them when I find myself in a gay tolerant community. I know I'd definitely cringe at my first sight of gay PDA, but I have come to understand that they are human first.

How will you respond to these questions?

FamilyPARENTING: The Mistake My Generation Must Avoid. by lulu69(op): 10:22am On Jan 14, 2015
by Lucas TOGAN

Standing on the second floor of my school building that hot afternoon, I saw my dad walking to the principal's office. Now, I was one of those students that stayed out of trouble for the most part; so you can imagine my shock as he had given me no prior notice of visiting. Surely, a few minutes later, I was summoned. Guess what? He had come to school with a new jamb form so I could change my course from Architecture to Computer Engineering.

"Huh, seriously?", I thought.

Being a civil engineering contractor he explained that he'd seen too many an architect reduced to rubbles just to get a design job on site.

"Lai lai, my son will not do that", he thought. (Emphasis on "my son" - not me)

What did I know at the time? Fear of pop coupled with the fact that I believed there was no course I could not pursue convinced me to shift from what I naturally liked to what I thought I could do. How wrong I was!

Fast forward 8yrs - I graduate as a computer engineer from one of the most challenging university environments known to man - LASU!

What did I know? - Nada!

What could I do? - a whole lot other than anything I was forced to load up to stack up grades in school.

I used to hate LASU for my apparent discontent with life but that was misplaced. Then I hated pop for the same reason but that was also misplaced. The man did what he thought was best for his son at the time. Not me O - his son. But not his fault, he belongs to a generation that took most of their decisions based on a myriad of prejudices and insecurities. Above all they manipulated us mostly so we become like the societal figures they most admired.

Fast forward another 3 years, my son arrives. Before birthing the kid, wifey and I agree not to put any pressure on the lad in terms of class position - he can come any position but last. We also agree not to manipulate or influence his career choice but instead to identify his talent/strengths and invest heavily there in. This is the "best" that we want to give the boy. He is our son, but first he is an individual with his own race to run. The best legacy we can give him is to equip him well enough for this life race; not the rat race.

When parents say I want to give my child the best education - what do they really mean? More often than not, they mean I will send my child to the most expensive school I can possibly afford. However, what should they mean? A parent should give a child - not their child - the best education in line with the child's natural ability. Parents need to first shed the toga of selfishness and see the child as an individual with unique abilities and characteristics. In this light, it will be easier to invest in what that individual can do.

The biggest challenge facing my generation as we become parents is to have a paradigm shift from our folks (the generation before ours). I can bet I was schooled because kasali, who is a mechanic down the road, did not go to school. So my folks figured he failed because he lacked formal education. What they fail to realise is that in a different place; and different time, kasali - albeit lacking formal education - could have become the very best mechanic he could be.

What am I saying in essence, I have agreed with wifey that our son must finish secondary education at the very least but afterwards we will only support whatever he chooses to become - concert pianist, chef, biker etc. We do not want to contribute to the rat race the way everyone seem to be doing. We want a child who will be happy making money from his natural God-given abilities. We owe him this much. You owe yours this much. They should not die with their talent/potentials the way we seem to be dying with ours.

PoliticsIs Buhari The Change We Need? by lulu69(op): 10:16am On Jan 14, 2015
by Lucas TOGAN

GEJ is a good and decent human being. I believe that he never thought he'd come so far so soon in his lifetime. But he has. I also believe that the body took office but the mind never came. GEJ is a nice and sincere guy - I truly believe that. But the problem is that "nice" is not a fruit of the holy spirit (my christian adherents can relate) and my corporate juggernauts know that "nice" guys don't get the corner office and they often finish last. I have never been a supporter but he especially disappointed me repeatedly with his unguarded utterances over the years. Also whatever empathy he had before taking office has since evaporated.

Buhari on the flip side rides on his past records. These records attest to his uncompromising nature and also his genuine distaste for corruption. Despite these laudable achievements, a few questions bother me:

1. Can he repeat same milestones without his formidable team mate - Idiagbon? - Who knows?

2. Are his 30+ year old credentials and modus operandi relevant in the face of modern day Nigeria? - Hard to tell.

3. Can he understand that while decrees go from table to street (pronouncement to implementation) in no time, bills can sometimes take years to pass? - I hope so.

Truth be told I have not seen a Nigerian leader who impresses me. Fashola came close but he did nothing special. Between the 2 described above, who is my man? Neither. But I'm gunning for Buhari - not because he has given me any clear cut blueprint about his plans for Nigeria but because I know there will be less sycophants around the president. I'm gunning for Buhari not because APC is less corrupt than PDP but because with APC, I believe one key sector will be handed to Fashola - I imagine POWER - and he will turn it into a "Lagos". I want Buhari because though some of his efforts might be frustrated by the national assembly, other sectors will function much better while he wrangles with the "big belly" men. I will vote Buhari because if he is the same man as 30+ years ago then his technocrat running mate will have a lot of input in governance. If Osinbajo does to Nigeria what he did to Lagos judiciary then my vote would have truly counted.

Buhari's pointe majeur is to fight corruption. The funny thing is that corruption will fight back and fight hard - very hard. Corruption needs to be starved. When you starve corruption, it dies a natural death. That's the Osinbajo style. That's how he approached the corrupt Lagos judiciary and won the war. Though I fear some of Buhari's ideas might be archaic and his methods border-line mundane, because of his choice of running mate, I am convinced they make a formidable team.

Having said all these, I, however, only want Buhari for one term. I want him to be a bridge to the future. A future where intelligence supercedes sentiments. A future where a performer like Fashola can be rest assured that what he did in Lagos for 8 years will guarantee him the Aso Rock residence. A future where people like El-Rufai will not be victimized after the outstanding job he did in Abuja. The list goes on. That future is not today; so Fashola should settle for a ministerial portfolio. El-Rufai should go and govern Kaduna. But the future belongs to the intelligent and Buhari is a safe bridge to that future.
