But between you and I, our words will be spelt as pronounced Lool not after knowing what I know now dear..We have to give honour to whom honour is due. Since these words are a collective of the lingual of various countries, their pronunciation should be acknowledged. Its an insult doing otherwise. Good morning |

dearpreye: Shouldn't be hard to believe....Back then in secondary school days, science students were erroneously told not to take the English language very seriously...many of us fell for it at the first...we had to make up for it much later... Yeah, true that - such false beliefs. Now I know where your resentment for the English lingual stems from, Lool. No one can boldly say they are masters of this art - the English lingual, its a never-ending learning process. Matter of fact, we are all still learners. |

Emmyk: Primary 4.
Eh ehn... That's true oo
Tell you what, I love the topic. I really do. Alright But is Primary 4 the highest level the school got? I'l recommend the highest level tho. Well well, not really. I do have a scholarly backing tho.
There are lots of television contents designed for different gratifications of their target audience, which may be for children, teenagers, youth or adult to achieve objectives. Cartoons and animated films were once the favourite program of viewers of different age group in the society. These cartoon and animated films were enjoyed by almost every person from different walks of life on their television sets and theatres. In the beginning when the animated movies and cartoon started their journey, the program content of both contained humour and entertainment for all age and sophistication levels. Cartoons, however, now lacked their cross-generational appeal and converted into “kids stuff” (Kellogg, 1992). Cartoon is not a precise term now a day as it is applied to multifaceted graphic form. It is the most entertaining source for kids as they developed strong affiliation and attachment with it (Kermnitz 1973). I see, however, these literatures aren't recent. Might be agreeable then but presently, in this 21 st century, I think cartoons and animated movies got cross-generational appeal, its no longer kids stuff. Was gonna research on this too but it skipped me...I definitely will. M I'll show him my questionnaire when we resume. I'll give that a thought.
Say 60-80 How about a sample of hundred, too much to handle? I think I'll do just that. In the section A of the questionnaire, I'll put HOW OFTEN DO YOU WATCH TV CARTOONS? DAILY? WEEKLY RARELY?
Just as you said, it will help me at the end, if pupils that thick "daily" perform better ( section B's test)... My conclusion will be PUPILS THAT WATCH TV CARTOONS REGULARLY PERFORM BETTER THAN THOSE WHO DONT. What do you say on this?
I think I won't need Purposive ST. like you said. Exactly... I'm not too familiar with the thing fa. All I know is, you use the formula to get your sample, from your population. Another concept for me to research upon then |

MizMyColi: Well dearie I think it has to do with the origin of the words. If you dig a little deeper, you will find that Psychology prolly originated from a greek or roman word. Greek, I think....because I remember there is a greek alphabet called "psi" You get?
Same is applicable for Paris, and Debut.... I like to believe they are french words or originated from french words. Now ordinarily, French has 26 alphabets like English, but the pronunciations differ. So, it is only normal to maintain the integrity of the word's origin.
The "Entendre" in double entendre, for example, is a french word which is pronounce ontondre. Same for "Imbroglio" which means being in a state of confusion or embarrassment, it is pronounce imbroyo. Another is Julio....this is of spanish/mexican origin, and as such must obey the rules of their alphabets when being pronounced. "Julio" is pronounced; huyio
It's just the way it is. lols.
Hmmm. Nice examples up there hun. Thank you for the clarification...enlightening it was |

francizy: LoL.. I believe trimming down words in English language will do a lot of people good. Just as America and many other countries out there advocate for freedom to practice gayism, I'll advocate for English vocabulary's reduction.. Lmao. I wouldn't be surprised finding several advocates like yourself out there tho. |

francizy: Please don't ask francizy as he hates vocabulary.. 100s of thousands of English words out there and more keeps popping out. Most annoying part is that many words mean the same thing and I ask, why can't the best/simplest/most popular words be adopted with their synonyms debunked!? Lmao! So everyone hates English eh? This is new, Lool @your question, because English Language is an art - its meant to be interesting and not be a bore. These synonyms makes it beautiful |

dearpreye: Mizmycoli, your undiluted attention is needed here. Fast.
Well, some of those words have their routes in languages whose alphabets are totally different from that of the English Language and efforts must be made to have them pronounced with their native language in mind.
For instance, J in English is Y in Dutch while LL is pronounced as Y in Spanish!
Villa is pronounced Viya in Spanish;
Arjen is pronounced Aryen in Dutch.....
That's the little I know! It has to do with the original native language of the root word. I hate English language shaa Quite true @ the emboldened...and the little you knew got me clarified But not true @I hate English language, Lool. |

So, my friend & I were discussing about English words. How some English words gets pronounced with some silent letters. For example, Psychology, Debut, Paris etc.
He is of the opinion that since these letters are silent in pronounciation, the words should be spelt without them.
Psychology - Sychology
Debut - Debu
Paris - Pari
This I agreed...but it kinda looked odd, Lool.
So my questions here are,
Is there an explanation as to why these silent letters are present in these words to start with?
Why can't words be spelt as pronounced?
