Oyo Deputy Governor Rauf Olaniyan has attested to the brutality of operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad(SARS).

Olaniyan, who joined thousands of protesters at the entrance of the Oyo State Government Secretariat, Agodi Ibadan, also supported calls for an end to police brutality.

The Deputy Governor, who joined the protesters by carrying a white placard at the entrance of the State Secretariat, said he was twice a victim of SARS operatives.

The inscriptions on his placard read: “I was a victim of Police brutality twice, Rauf Olaniyan.

CrimeFour Killed As Vigilante Members Raid Police Armoury To Confront Bandits by Macima28(op): 1:39pm On Oct 13, 2020
Niger State following a bloody clash with armed bandits.

Residents said the deceased are members of the vigilante groups who reportedly engaged the dreaded armed men who launched an attack at Tashan Kare village, an outskirts of Kagara town, Rafi local government headquarters.

The vigilante group protested against police inaction after several distress calls for them to come to their aid while they engaged in a fire fight with the gunmen, a source said, asking not to be named for security reasons.

He said the vigilante groups stormed the Emir of Kagara’s palace with the corpse of their colleagues in protest. However, the Emir was away in Abuja for medical reasons.

“The vigilante members went to the police station in Kagara town and called the police to join them in the bush to help chase away the gunmen as the bandits are still present with more sophisticated weapons better than theirs.

“The police officers declined the request, saying they needed an order from above. The vigilante members also pleaded with the police to lend them their guns to confront the bandit; however, the police refused,” the source said.

The vigilante members stormed the station’s armoury and whisked away about 10 AK-47s after forcing the police away, and returned to the battlefront and engaged the gunmen, many sources said.

The source added that one vigilante member was shot dead by the police while trying to snatch a gun from him, however, the police said the vigilante member was only injured and not killed.

Sources also confirmed that the looted guns were later returned to the police station upon intervention of the local government chairman, Isma’il Modibbo, with the support of some traditional rulers in the area.

The police spokesperson for Niger State, Wasiu Abiodun, in a statement to PREMIUM TIMES, confirmed the incident. He said the area is now calm following reinforcements of security personnel.

He said members of the vigilante group from Tashan Kare village, numbering over 50 reported at Kagara Division that armed bandits attacked their village, and four of their members lost their lives while confronting the bandits before the arrival of the police at the scene.

While the DPO of the station was addressing the vigilante members on the efforts made by the police to flush out the bandits, some members of the vigilante became violent and attacked the police station, the police said.

“On receipt of the information, the commissioner of police dispatched a reinforcement team led by the deputy commissioner of police in charge of operations and upon their arrival, normalcy has already been restored due to the prompt intervention of the area commander Kontagora, personnel of Operation Puff Adder and conventional policemen attached to Kagara division to secure the division.

“In the process, one of the vigilante members attempted to snatch a rifle from the station guard, he was shot and sustained a bullet wound.

“However, normalcy has since been restored in the area and the commissioner of police, Adamu Usman, enjoins the good people of Niger State to be law abiding and go about their normal businesses.

“The police warned residents that they should not take laws into their hands no matter the provocation, as measures are being put in place to safeguard their lives and properties.

“He further directed the deputy commissioner of police in charge Investigation to launch a full scale investigation into the incident to unravel the root cause of the unfortunate incident and bring the perpetrators to book,” the police statement said.

HealthDr Stella’s COVID-19 Treatment Claim Unproven by Macima28(op): 6:19pm On Jul 28, 2020
...Mere speculation, medical directors insist

The Guild of Medical Directors (GMD) has reacted to video claims by Dr Stella Immanuel, a General Practitioner (GP) in the U.S. that she has treated over 350 patients of COVID-19 with combination of Hydrochloroquine (HCQ), Zinc and Zithromax, saying it is her own personal, unsubstantiated claim.

In a statement signed by the President of GMD, Prof. Olufemi Babalola in Abuja on Tuesday, the doctors said “there is no scientific evidence to prove the claim.”

The Nigerian-born and trained physician, is trending on social media after delivering a speech on COVID-19 in the U.S. on Monday.

She said at a news conference held by a group of American doctors under the aegis of “America’s Frontline Doctors” in front of the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington DC that the antimalarial drug — hydroxychloroquine, zinc and antibacterial drug — Zithromax, were effective cures for
the coronavirus disease.

The doctors held a two-day “White Coat Summit” at the Capitol Hill to address what they call “massive disinformation campaign” surrounding the virus.

Immanuel, who was joined by other frontline doctors, said she had treated no fewer than 350 patients with hydroxychloroquine, zinc, and Zithromax.

However, the GMD president stated that research on the efficacy of the combination of Hydrochloroquine (HCQ), Zinc and Zithromax to treat COVID-19 had yet to be concluded.

He noted that “we have watched with dismay the viral video of Dr Stella Immanuel, a doctor in the United States of America.

“The video has been shared all over the country and led to many people justifiably asking the question, ‘What do you think, doctor?.

“The video was part of a news conference held in America.”

Babalola stated that the group was founded by Dr Simone Gold, a board-certified physician and attorney, made up of medical doctors who came together to address what the group termed “massive disinformation campaign” about the coronavirus.

The guild president noted that while some studies suggested that it was effective, others felt otherwise.

He added that “it is true that Senegal, where HCQ is routinely used, has one of the lowest COVID-19 case fatality rates in the world at 0.64 per cent compared to 3.4 per cent in the U.S.

“As we speak, a study is underway at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) on its efficacy and safety. Subsequently, a meta-analysis of all these studies should be undertaken to pool all the results and come up with analysis which will guide clinicians.

“So, until then, all anecdotal claims such as the one from Dr Stella Immanuel must be taken with a pinch of salt.”

Babalola stated that HCQ may be a cause of serious complications and even death in some people, stressing that other anecdotalclaims such as the herbal mixture from Madagascar had subsequently been proven ineffective.

He stated that the Guild of Medical Directors is a body of owners of private hospitals in Nigeria “and collectively, we are responsible for the management of about 70 per cent of the healthcare needs of Nigerians.

“So, a lot of the burden in explaining the problem as related to the video naturally falls on us. Therefore, we feel it is pertinent to explain or clarify the issues for Nigerians.

“We must reiterate that Coronavirus is real and COVID-19 is an indiscriminate killer.

“We know from personal experience since it has killed many doctors and nurses all over the country, including our very own Prof. Lovett Lawson. The disease is definitely not a joke.”

He, therefore, condemned the politicisation of the pandemic, noting that the whole world was actively looking for an effective treatment and vaccine for the disease.

“So, until then, everyone has a responsibility to remain safe and protect one another through the proven ways.

“These are — social distancing, wearing of face mask and frequent hand washing and respiratory hygiene
