CrimeLagos Policeman Kills South African Returnee Over N5m by mackay37(op): 9:50am On Apr 14, 2017
Protesting youths at Sobo bus stop, Akowonjo, Lagos State, went on the rampage on Thursday after a mobile policeman shot dead a 23-year-old man, identified only as Niyi, aka Para.

As some operatives reportedly whisked away the killer cop in a van, the protesters resorted to violence, vandalising a hotel, shops and vehicles parked by the roadside in the area.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the policeman was one of the security officers attached to the hotel – Erico Bellisima Hotels – which is located some distance away from the bus stop.

A version of the story said Niyi had been at loggerheads with a friend, identified only as Santo, over a sum of N5.2m Niyi sent to him in tranches for safekeeping while he was in South Africa.

Our correspondent gathered that the deceased returned from South Africa last week to reclaim the money after he was told that Santo converted it to personal use.

Another account stated that the money was Niyi’s share of an undisclosed deal carried out by Santo on his behalf.

After failed attempts to get the sum from Santo, he was said to have reported the case to policemen at a division in the neighbourhood.

The policemen reportedly told him to alert them once he sighted Santo in the hotel, where he always stayed.

Around 7am on Thursday, Niyi and his friends reportedly visited the hotel to verify if he was there.

A resident of the area, Segun Ajayi, said Niyi was into an undisclosed Internet business, through which he realised the money.

He said, “Niyi had not been in the country for a while. He just returned last week. While he was in South Africa, he did a job and told his friend, Santo, to help him pick up some money which was about N5.2m. He told him to keep the money. But before he came back, Santo had started spending it.

The hotel
“He lodged at Erico Bellisima Hotels. Niyi had been going to check him at the hotel, but the receptionist insisted Santo was not there. He and his friends went there this morning (Thursday) and confirmed Santo was there. Niyi called operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad. They said they were on their way and that he should ensure Santo did not leave the premises.

“Santo sent a worker to check if Niyi and his friends were still around. They beat the worker. A policeman securing the hotel came in and instead of asking what happened, he started shooting. He chased the men and shot Niyi in the leg; the man fell. As he was struggling to stand, he shot him in the back at a close range and he died on the spot. The policeman knew Niyi very well; he was probably aware of the N5.2m deal.”

Our correspondent, who visited the scene, observed that the blood of the victim had coagulated beside a gutter where he was reportedly felled by the bullets.

The glasses of the hotel and windscreens of five vehicles parked around the scene were shattered by an angry mob.

Three shops were also vandalised, while commercial activities in the area were suspended.

Policemen from the Area M Command, Idimu; Shasha Police Station, Rapid Response Squad and Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit, were on the ground to restore normalcy.

An eyewitness, Demola Adekanbi, said, “I stayed around the hotel. I heard gunshots around 7am and ran outside. I went to the hotel to know what was happening. I found out that it was a mobile policeman at the hotel that shot a man dead. When other security men in the hotel observed that the situation was becoming riotous, they called for reinforcement.

When other policemen came around, they used tear gas to stop people from further damage of the hotel.”

A friend of the deceased, Prince Okereke, said apart from the N5m issue, Santo had reportedly hacked into Niyi’s Facebook account and used it to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

He added that the deceased’s girlfriend was just delivered of a baby.

He said, “We lived together on Ponle Street, Akowonjo. Santo hacked into Niyi’s Facebook account and requested money from some people.

“He gave them a bank account which they paid money into. When Niyi woke up this morning (Thursday), he told me he was going to the hotel to see Santo about the fraud and the N5.2m deal.

“I was still sleeping when some people came to tell me that he had been shot dead.

“Santo probably gave the mobile policeman some money to chase Niyi away. As people were protesting, some policemen came there. They sneaked the mobile policeman and Santo into a van and took them away. We are demanding justice; such a thing cannot happen and we will keep quiet.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, confirmed the killing.

“The policeman is in custody and investigation is ongoing,” he added.

The PPRO promised to get back to our correspondent with details of the suspect.

He had, however, yet to do so as of press time.

Efforts to speak with the management of the hotel proved abortive as the facility was shut as of 1pm when our correspondent left the area.

Politics2017 Budget Is A Budget That Goes For More Debt -sanusi II by mackay37(op): 4:38am On Apr 06, 2017
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has raised alarm over the increasing debt in the country. He stated that among other producing countries in Africa, Nigeria has been on a borrowing bench, “Borrowing domestically to fund current expenditure”.

He added that the growth of Nigeria was driven largely by rising commodity prices and debt, adding that the module has reached the logical limit such as the collapse in oil price.

He said according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Federal Government of Nigeria is spending 66% of its interest revenue on debt, which means only 34% of its revenue was available for capital expenditure, recurrent expenditure and development.

The Emir made this known at the Kaduna State Investment Summit with the theme “Making Kaduna Investment Destination of Choice”.

He said the 2017 budget presented by the Federal Government is a budget that goes for more debt. He said: “As a country, we must understand that the module of government borrowing and spending has reached its limit, therefore growth must only come from investment”.

The Emir crtiticised leaders that go to China to sign MoU and come back with debts forgetting their areas of development.

He said: “A nation and a state is only transformed by vision, once that vision is lost every other thing around the vision collapses”.

He added that the growth of an economy will not come by borrowing.

In his keynote address, he urged the northern leaders to focus more on education and health sector especially in the north.

He asked them to use their resources to deal with the issues of poverty in their region. The occasion was well attended by industrialists, traditional rulers, media owners and government functionaries.

PoliticsN2.1bn Contract Fraud: EFCC Probes Senator Nwaoboshi, Brother by mackay37(op): 8:58am On Mar 31, 2017
By Soni Daniel, Northern Region Editor ABUJA—The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is closing in on Senator Peter Nwaoboshi and his brother, Augustine Nwaoboshi, after stumbling on vital information on how the two men supplied used equipment in place of new ones to Delta State government and went away with N2.1 billion. Peter Nwaoboshi The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, senator is reported to have, thereafter, used the proceeds of the procurement contract fraud to acquire several property in Lagos and Delta states using his companies as fronts for the acquisition. Findings by Vanguard revealed that the anti-graft agency had concluded moves to summon the two brothers for questioning any moment from now over their roles in the contract scam. The revelation came barely two days after Nwaoboshi raised a point of order on the floor of the Senate that the EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, had been terrorising senators since he was not confirmed and asked that he should be removed from the agency with immediate effect. A top source in EFCC revealed that Nwaoboshi, who represents Delta North in the Senate, used his company, Bilderberg Enterprises Limited, to secure contracts worth N2.1 billion to supply new equipment to two agencies of Delta State government but defrauded the state in the execution of the contract by importing and supplying used equipment which he passed off as new. The source said: “The Delta State Government awarded contracts to the suspect’s company, Bilderberg Enterprises Limited, in the sum of N1,580,000,000 and N474,936,000 to supply new construction and waste management equipment to the Delta State Direct Labour Agency and Delta State Waste Management Board respectively. The company supplied used equipment contrary to the Bill of Quantity. Property in Lagos, Delta “The senator also laundered the proceeds of alleged criminal activity to acquire property in Delta State and Lagos. Among the property acquired from proceeds of the fraud is a 12-storey building at Apapa in Lagos belonging to Delta State government which Nwaoboshi bought for N805,000,000. “The property was acquired through one of his companies, Golden Touch Construction Project Limited. The suspect also allegedly bought a warehouse at Apapa Wharf, Lagos for N800, 000,000.” BVN linked to 23 other undeclared bank accounts The anti-graft agency said it found a more ‘startling finding’ against Nwaoboshi, saying his Bank Verification Number, BVN, is linked to 23 other bank accounts which he did not disclose in his assets declaration record with the Code of Conduct Bureau as well as the fact that his younger brother, Augustine Nwaoboshi, is the sole signatory to some of the accounts. “We will charge the two brothers to court as soon as we conclude interrogating them because this is a clear case of money laundering,” one of the sources at the agency said.

PoliticsI Needed N200,000 To Solve Family Problems, Says Drug Mule by mackay37(op): 10:02am On Mar 24, 2017
LAGOS—A 39-year-old father of two alleged to have been arrested at the verge of exporting 1.555kg of cocaine to Dubia, the United Arab Emirates, has told anti-narcotic agents that he went into drug trafficking to raise N200,000 to solve some family problems. The suspect, Maduka Peter, an automobile parts dealer based in Aba, Abia State, according to Ahmadu Garba, the National Dug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Airport Commander, was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA Lagos. “Peter concealed 1.555kg of cocaine in his luggage on his way to Dubai on an Etihad flight,” the Commander stated. During interrogation, Peter said: “I lost goods worth four million Naira few years ago and since then my life has been a shadow of itself. I smuggled the drug for two hundred thousand Naira to solve family problems.” This is just as officials of NDLEA have uncovered new tricks by cartels to circumvent security checks with the arrest of a suspected drug trafficker, Roland Tochukwu, 37, who attempted to import 2.045kg of heroin from Nairobi, Kenya. The heroin, said to have been concealed inside his luggage, was detected during screening of passengers on an Ethiopian Airline flight at the MMIA. When searched, he was found in possession of a fake travel ticket, indicating that he was coming from China. However, preliminary investigation by the anti-narcotics agency revealed that he deliberately replaced his ticket with a fake one which indicated that he was coming from China instead of Nairobi. This new trick, as explained by Garba, “is because it is economically unwise to bring narcotics from China, where the price is higher than it is in Nigeria.” Roland, a trader in Onitsha, Anambra State, said that his friend introduced him into drug trafficking.

ABUJA – Another Justice of the Supreme Court whose home was raided by operatives of the Department of State Service, DSS, Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, has opened fresh can of worms, alleging that his ordeal was a function of his refusal at various times, to help the All Progressives Congress, APC, to pervert justice in governorship election disputes involving Ekiti, Rivers and Ebonyi states. Justice Ngwuta, in a letter dated October 18, which he forwarded to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Mahmud Mohammed and the National Judicial Council, NJC, specifically fingered the Minister of Transport, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi and Minister of Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, as those that approached him on behalf of the APC. In the letter entitled: “Invasion Of My House In The Night, Planting Of Huge Sums Of Money In Different Currencies, Purported Recovery Of The Money, Carting Away Of My Documents And Other Valuable Items And My Subsequent Abduction By Masked Operatives Of The DSS Between Friday, October 7th And Saturday, October 8th, 2016”, Ngwuta, said Ameachi begged him to facilitate the removal of Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State. He further disclosed that shortly after the Supreme Court affirmed the election of Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Amaechi also called him on phone and said “Oga is not happy”.

PoliticsNigeria's President Buhari Warned By First Lady by mackay37(op): 4:35am On Oct 14, 2016
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari's wife has warned him that she may not back him at the next election unless he shakes up his government.
In a BBC interview, Aisha Buhari said the president "does not know" most of the top officials he has appointed.
She suggested the government had been hijacked, saying a "few people" were behind presidential appointments.
Mr Buhari was elected last year with a promise to tackle corruption and nepotism in government.
His wife's decision to go public with her concerns will shock many people, but it shows the level of discontent with the president's leadership, says the BBC's Naziru Mikailu in the capital, Abuja.

The president famously remarked at his inauguration that he "belongs to nobody and belongs to everybody".
In the interview with Naziru Mikailu, Mrs Buhari said: "The president does not know 45 out of 50, for example, of the people he appointed and I don't know them either, despite being his wife of 27 years."
She said people who did not share the vision of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) were now appointed to top posts because of the influence a "few people" wield.
"Some people are sitting down in their homes folding their arms only for them to be called to come and head an agency or a ministerial position."
Asked to name those who had hijacked the government, she refused, saying: "You will know them if you watch television."
On whether the president was in charge, she said: "That is left for the people to decide."
Mrs Buhari said her husband had not told her whether he would contest the 2019 election.
"He is yet to tell me but I have decided as his wife, that if things continue like this up to 2019, I will not go out and campaign again and ask any woman to vote like I did before. I will never do it again."
Asked what she regarded as the government's major achievement, she said it was to improve security in the north-east where militant Islamist group Boko Haram has waged an insurgency since 2009.
"No-one is complaining about being attacked in their own homes. Thankfully everyone can walk around freely, go to places of worship, etc. Even kids in Maiduguri have returned to schools," Mrs Buhari said, referring to the city which was once the headquarters of the militant group.

The judge directed INEC and the PDP and their agents to “recognize, deal with and accord all facilities required by law on the Sheriff group.

Justice Abang further directed INEC and the PDP to “reject and ignore any activity (including primary elections/congresses for the nomination of candidates for the gubernatorial elections in Edo and Ondo states, purportedly conducted on behalf of the 2nd defendant (PDP) by any other persons or group of persons other than the Sheriff group.

The judge said the interlocutory orders are to subsist pending the determination of the substantive suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/439/2016 filed by two governorship aspirants of the PDP in Edo and Ondo States – Chief Benson Akingboye (Ondo) and Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma (Edo)

PoliticsBreaking: Court Stops Ogah’s Swearing-in As Abia Gov by mackay37(op): 5:22pm On Jun 30, 2016
The ongoing tension in God’s Own State, Thursday, took another dramatic turn, as a High Court sitting in Osisioma, Abia State, issued an injunction restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from issuing a certificate of return to Uchechukwu Ogah who was declared governor by an FCT High Court on Wednesday. INEC National Commissioner in charge of the South East, Amb. Lawrence Nwuruku issuing Certificate of Return to Uchechukwu Ogah as Governor of Abia State, on Thursday, June 30, 2016 The Court also restrained the Chief Judge of Abia State from swearing him in while ordering status quo to be maintained until pending the determination of motion on notice. Justice C.H Ahuchaogu in granting the order relied on section 143 (1) and (2) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended). This came as INEC advanced reasons for its decision to issue a Certificate of Return to Mr Uche Ogah who came second at the last PDP governorship primaries in Abia State. INEC National Commissioner in charge of the South East, Amb. Lawrence Nwuruku said the commission only kowtowed to the lawful order of a court. However, responding, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, who had filed an appeal against the ruling expressed shock at the hurry at which INEC issued a certificate of return to his rival. Ikpeazu had in a statement on earlier on Thursday, urged the people of the state to remain calm and law abiding despite the issuance of Certificate of Return to Mr. Uche Ogah.
