PoliticsUS Government Issues statement on CJN Removal by MadeInTokyo(op): 3:21pm On Jan 26, 2019
We note widespread Nigerian criticism that this decision is unconstitutional and that it undermines the independence of the judicial branch.

“The Embassy of the United States is deeply concerned by the impact of the executive branch’s decision to suspend and replace the Chief Justice and head of the judicial branch without the support of the legislative branch on the eve of national and state elections.
We note widespread Nigerian criticism that this decision is unconstitutional and that it undermines the independence of the judicial branch. That undercuts the stated determination of government, candidates, and political party leaders to ensure that the elections proceed in a way that is free, fair, transparent, and peaceful – leading to a credible result.

We urge that the issues raised by this decision be resolved swiftly and peacefully in accordance with due process, full respect for the rule of law, and the spirit of the Constitution of Nigeria. Such action is needed urgently now to ensure that this decision does not cast a pall over the electoral process.”

PoliticsHow Oshiomhole’s ‘agbero Political Mentality’ Caused Mass Defection To PDP by MadeInTokyo(op): 10:55am On Jul 25, 2018
The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has revealed how the All Progressives Congress, APC, National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole caused lawmakers’ defection from the party to the PDP.

State Chairman of the party, Dan Osi Orbih said the fallout of the “agbero” and “Apes Obey” political mentality of Oshiomhole was already impacting negatively on the APC.

It was reported that no fewer than 15 senators of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Tuesday, defected to the PDP. The defectors cited crisis and factions within the party as the reasons for their defection, saying they cannot continue to pursue their political career under the ruling party.

Similarly, a total of 37 members of the House of Representatives announced their official defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a statement he personally signed, Orbih said the reality had dawned on the party that it meted out poor treatment to a former National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

The statement, titled: “Operation rescue Nigeria,” reads, “Edo PDP congratulates our new Senators and Honourable Members of the House of Representatives.

“Your resolve to join our party, the PDP, marks the beginning of the end of tyranny and slide to dictatorship of the APC federal government.

“On behalf of the joyous members of PDP Edo State, we salute your courage in the face of intimidation, harassment and brute display of power arrogance and misuse of security agencies to cow and silence the opposition.

“The poor treatment shown to Chief John Oyegun has started manifesting in Adams Oshiomhole’s “agbero” and “Apes obey” political mentality. Surely, his emergence as factional national chairman of APC has heralded the reversal of the fortunes of APC and by providence, that of Nigeria.

“With regrets, we recall how the Edo state House of assembly was locked and relocated to his Govt house sitting room during his inglorious years as governor of Edo State. Be informed that Adams is an enemy of democracy.

“For us in PDP, it is celebration all the way as the liberation of Nigeria and Nigerians have began.
“With today’s development, we look forward to a vibrant and truly independent legislative arm of government. A National Assembly with the full backing of Nigerians.

“Operation Rescue Nigeria has indeed commenced!

“PDP…listening to the cries of the people!!”

PoliticsRe: EXCLUSIVE: FG Diverted N28bn Ecological Fund In 2016 by MadeInTokyo(op):
According to the recently released auditor-general’s report for 2016, the federal government termed the fund movements as ‘borrowings’ and there were no clear arrangements for repayments.

“The Ecological Fund was set up for the amelioration of general ecological problems in any part of Nigeria,” the report signed by Anthony Ayine, the auditor-general of the federation read.
“It was observed that the sum of N28,239,060,570.89 representing about 58% was paid out of the fund as loan to carry out various activities that are not related to development of natural resources.

“We recommend that henceforth, the federal government deploys these special funds only for the stated objectives of the funds.

“We note that the various withdrawals from funds by the federal government are stated to be borrowings. We further observed that the arrangements for the repayment of these funds or borrowings are unclear.

“For example, the 2017 budget did not include any appropriations for the repayment of these borrowings.
“We therefore further recommend that arrangements are clarified immediately, for the repayment of any funds not disbursed for the prescribed purposes of these funds.”

PoliticsEXCLUSIVE: FG Diverted N28bn Ecological Fund In 2016 by MadeInTokyo(op): 7:12pm On Jul 23, 2018
The federal government diverted N28 billion from the Ecological Fund in 2016, TheCable can report.

“Examination of FAAC records revealed that a total amount of N48,601,928,311.08 was received into the Ecological Fund in the year, as the required 3.0% deduction from the federation account for the development of natural resources.

In his remarks, Ayine expressed concerns that some agencies are not complying with financial regulations of providing their accounts for audit adding that 65 government has never submitted their accounts for audit.

“Most of the government corporations, companies and commissions have not submitted their audited accounts for 2016 to me.

“Only 51 audited financial statements for 2016 and 149 for 2015 have been submitted to my office as at December 27, 2017, despite the provision of Financial Regulation 3210(v) which enjoins the chief executive officers of these bodies to submit both the audited accounts and management report to me not later than May 31 of the following year of account.

“As at April 2018, 109 agencies have not submitted beyond 2013, 76 agencies last submitted for the 2010 financial year
while 65 agencies have never submitted any account since inception.

“The ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) and their accounting officers are reverting to the situation in the past where they did not promptly respond to audit observations.

“I am concerned about this development, which is a major set back to our accountability process.”

Ayine is required by Section 85 (5) of the constitution to submit the report on the audit of the accountant-general’s financial statements to the national assembly within 90 days of receipt of the statements from the accountant-general.

In the executive summary, Ayine wrote: “The financial statements of the federal government for the year ended 31st December 2016 were first submitted to me by the Accountant-General of the Federation on 30th June 2017.

“Following my preliminary observations, the statements were significantly amended and resubmitted on 29th September 2017.

“Further amendments to the financial statements led to another re-submission on 29th December 2017 and 16th January 2018 before the final version was eventually submitted on 20th March 2018.”

PoliticsTinubu’s Associates Fear Buhari May Turn Against Him After 2019 by MadeInTokyo(op): 7:00pm On Jul 23, 2018
Alleged o whittle down Tinubu’s political influence in S’West

Say some govs working against Tinubu’s interest in Osun

As the 2019 presidential election draws closer, some political associates of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, have expressed fear that President Muhammadu Buhari may turn against Tinubu after the 2019 elections.

Tinubu’s associates, who served in different capacities while he was the governor of Lagos State, equally doubted whether Tinubu made the right judgment to support the president’s re-election in 2019.

Some of his associates recently spoke with THISDAY in confidence, wondering what would likely be the fate of the APC leader if he “eventually helps Buhari win a second term in office as the president of Nigeria.”
One of the associates, who served in the Lagos State Executive Council between 2003 and 2007, noted that the president might want “to use Tinubu to win Lagos and South-west and afterwards, dump him.”

He disclosed that Tinubu’s political allies “have been putting pressure on him to reconsider his decision to support Buhari’s re-election.”
“It appears Asiwaju is resolute to support Buhari despite the way he was treated after he helped Buhari win 2015 presidential election.”
The associate said even though Tinubu shrugged off the warning of his trusted associates repeatedly, realities would eventually dawn on him at last that his judgment to support Buhari’s re-election was not right

He explained that Buhari “has never been comfortable with Tinubu’s vast financial resources”. According to him, the president was also said to be uncomfortable with Tinubu’s political influence, not only in the South-west states, but also across the federation.
“Buhari may choose to cut him to size after his re-election,” the associate said.

Another associate, who is working closely with the APC leader, noted that many of the people to whom Buhari had concentrated powers had not hidden their disapproval of Tinubu.

“When the time comes, the president will simply become inaccessible. The sharks within the administration will turn against Tinubu. They have done it before. They are going to do it again. But Tinubu is not looking at issues from this perspective.

“Buhari could not have come back to Tinubu if the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola could really secure him victory in Lagos State. Buhari returned to Tinubu because none of his new friends could help him win election in Lagos and South-west states,” the associate said.

He revealed that Buhari actually preferred Fashola; Ondo State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu; his Ogun State counterpart, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun; Ekiti State Governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, but could not depend on them alone to win the majority of votes in the South-west.
Another associate said Tinubu’s political allies were jittery “due to how Buhari treated the APC leader shortly after he was elected president.”

“Despite his contribution to Buhari’s election, he was at a time denied access to the president to the chagrin of his supporters,” he added.
He said the APC national leader should learn from the treatment meted out to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who, despite his support for Buhari after losing the APC’s presidential primary, was isolated and had his business interest harmed by a government he helped put in place.
He explained that the first thing they did was “to turn against his business interest.

They claimed the contract between the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) and Intels, in which Atiku has interest, violated the 1999 Constitution.
“What did Atiku do wrong? What offence did he commit? They simply consider him too rich and too powerful for them. Thus, they tag him a threat to the Buhari government. That is the way they see Tinubu,” he said.

The source cited how the presidency “played former APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, against Tinubu”.
“In order to satisfy Tinubu, the presidency has suddenly realised that Odigie-Oyegun is weak and undeserving to remain as the party’s national chairman. The plot to deal with Tinubu is well known to some privileged northerners within the president’s inner circle. Tinubu cannot deny that such a plot exist,” he said.

An entirely different source shared the fear of Tinubu’s political associates, disclosing that some South-west governors had started working subtly against Tinubu’s interest in Osun State just after APC’s victory in Ekiti State.

Already, the source claimed that some South-west governors “have started promoting the candidacy of the Secretary to Osun State Government, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti, in the presidency against Tinubu’s interest and contrary to understanding they reached before Ekiti State election.
“Tinubu agreed to support the Fayemi candidacy on the ground that he would be given privilege to choose the governorship candidate in Osun State. They all agreed to this condition at a meeting facilitated by the Presidency. But they have started breaching this agreement. Subtly, they have been funding and promoting Adeoti against Tinubu’s interest. They are simply working to whittle down Tinubu’s political influence in the South-west states,” the source explained.
