We just watch the news and interact with muslims. There are other religions like Hindu, Christianity and Buddhism with billions of adherents just like Islam. But Islam is one that spectacularly stands out as 'off-ish' to neutrals.

Terrorism, violence, restrictions of women, hard-line laws, repression, political ideology, aversion to modernity etc are some of the things that Islam has become known for.
